A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
OurFirstNewsle9er
Welcometothefirstedi/onoftheInterfacesofGlobalChangenewsle9er,partofourefforttokeepyouinformedabouttheac/vi/esandaccomplishmentsofourgrowingglobalchangecommunityatVirginiaTech.Nowinitssecondyear,thegraduateprogramisthrivingwith15Ph.D.fellowsand22facultymembers.WeopenedtheacademicyearinAugustwithaMeet&GreetRecep/onattheHahnGarden,andwelcomed5newstudentstotheprogram.TheGlobalChangeSeminarclass(FIW5004)nowmeetsweekly,andthestudent-drivensyllabusreflectsourcommunity'sstronginterestinthescience/society/policyinterface.Facultymembersarealwayswelcometojoinusfortheselivelydiscussions.
Thisfall,weareworkingtoraiseourcollec/veresearchandeduca/onachievementstoahigherlevelofcohesionandrecogni/on.WithsupportfromtheFralinLifeScienceIns/tuteandtheVirginiaTechGraduateSchoolweareac/velymakingstridestowardsestablishingTheGlobalChangeCenteratVirginiaTech.Thislargecross-campusini/a/vewillcapitalizeonVT'sstrengthsinscience,engineeringandthesocialsciences,inawidearrayofacademicunitsatourUniversity.Wehavealreadygainedconsiderabletrac/ontowardsthisunifiedvisionthroughourworkontheIGCIGEPandbyrallyingtheenthusiasmofaddi/onalfacultymembersacrosscampus.WenowhaveofficespaceinFralinHall,havehiredafull-/meGlobalChangeCenterCoordinator,andareworkingonourofficialCentercharter.Withthiscurrentmomentum,Ibelievethemonthsaheadpromisetobefullofexci/ngdevelopments.Staytuned!

AmyPrudenreceivesthe2014BuschAwardAmyPruden,professorofcivilandenvironmentalengineeringandassociatedeananddirector ofinterdisciplinarygraduateeduca/onintheGraduateSchoolatVirginiaTech,isthe2014 recipientofthePaulL.BuschAwardwhichincludesa$100,000researchgrant.Awell-recognized researcher in her field, Pruden is instrumental in developing a new way of thinking about controlling aqua/c pathogens and expanding the use of recycled water. She has an interna/onal reputa/on in applied microbial ecology, environmental remedia/on, and environmental reservoirs of an/microbial resistance. Readmore
