ABOUT THE SEMINAR
The safety, quality and nutritional value of the food we eat is of fundamental importance to our health and
wellbeing. Food safety and nutrition are therefore key concerns to ensure healthy and safe practices being
promoted.
Despite progress in curbing under-nutrition, our country’s population is still affected by many food-related
challenges, including vitamin and mineral deficiencies, obesity, and non-communicable diseases. These chal-
lenges are partially due to cheap, convenient, and highly-processed foods that are appealing to the taste. But
one area which needs combined focus of all stake holders is to ensure the safety of our food from infection
and contamination. Food safety encompasses not only the prevention of gastro-intestinal illnesses caused by
bacteria and viruses, but also the avoidance of harm from chemical contamination and the ingestion of un-
wanted physical contaminants such as glass or metal. Food poisoning can cause serious illness, and some
types can lead to permanent disability or even death. Control of food safety is managed by a series of inter-
ventions that apply to all food businesses from production to point of sale.
The proposed seminar will focus on the role played by diet and nutrition in health and disease prevention as
these are the vital ingredients for healthier and prosperous world. The seminar will also try to assess the
hazards and risks associated with consumption of contaminated food.
