• INTERPOL started in the year 1923.• Headquarters is in Lyon, France • It has 190 member countries• It has 4 official languages• Kenya became the member of the
organization in 1968
INTRODUCTION
• Environmental Crime is one of the most profitable and fastest growing areas of National and international criminal activities.
• Criminal networks and syndicates, motivated by high profits and low risk, which have established National and International industry that:-
CONT.• Endangers the health and welfare
of our communities and future generations.
• Compromises the natural heritage and ecological integrity of plants.
• Unfairly disadvantages to thosecompanies complying with environmental laws
• Flouts environmental law as well as many other laws.
MISSION:-
• Assists member countries in the effective enforcement of national and international environmental laws and treaties.

5. ECO-MESSAGES• Is a standardized system of reporting Environmental
Crimes in 4 INTERPOL official languages.• It was developed to provide uniform intelligence
data report.• System can be used to report all forms of
environmental crimes which includes:-(a) the illegal transport and damping of waste materials,(b) the illegal transport and damping of radioactive materials.
ECO-MESSAGES cont.(c)the illegal traffic and trade in flora
and fauna must be submitted through NCBs
IMPORTANT BENEFITS• Cross referencing of materials which
can produce valuable feedback.• Enables reporting country to ask
questions or make requests.• cooperation between Law
Enforcement Agencies.• Enables criminal analyst to study
data and produce analytical reports.
HOW IT FUNCTIONS:
System uses carefully designed details of a particular crime. It permits:
• speedy and methodical entry of the reports details in a format which is compatible with INTERPOL database.
•Efficient cross referencing of data against
other entries in the computerized INTERPOL database
•Organized and meaningful extraction of that data in a way that facilitates applications such as Criminal intelligence analysis.
CHALLENGES• Lack of adequate resources • Division that separates law
enforcement agencies • Lack of communication• Weak legislation• Corruption• Lack of political goodwill
WAYFORWARD
• Legislative improvement are required• Cooperation among Law
Enforcement Agencies both national and international to be strengthened.
• Sharing of intelligence • Formation of national task force.• Capacity building
