Digital Revolution: The Indian Film Industry Comes Of AgeICBC’s Media & Entertainment Committee set up a specific sub-committee to advise, facilitate and promote the recently signed Audio Visual Co-Production Agreement between India and Canada. This committee consults with and obtains the requisite resource persons from both within the film industry as well as allied services that could support queries and assist in the proper implementation of the treaty. Preetam Daniel, Director of Sales, India & SE Asia, Imax Corporation, provides his perspective on the state of the industry.
2014 marks the 101st year of the Indian film industry - the largest producer of films
in the world. After more than a 100 years of entertaining a diaspora of Indian film
lovers globally, today the Indian cinematic industry is on the forefront of a digital
revolution—one that is not only changing the way films are produced, but also
about reorienting their distribution and consumption.
The multiplex revolution in India began in 1995 and since then has brought much
needed enhancements to the movie viewing experience in the country. However,
despite being the largest producer of films globally, India continues to remain
grossly under screened with 12 screens per million as compared to 117 screens
per million in the United States. And while multiplexes account for just eight percent
of India’s 12,000 screens, they rake in a third of total box office receipts. These plush
multiplexes, often in urban shopping malls, offer state of the art projection and
sound technologies.
Indian filmmakers have also embraced digital technology to help them tell their
stories. Theatrical distributors have supported it as a way to reduce the cost of
transporting movie reels to cinemas. Distribution today costs just one fifth of what
it used to but the reach is five times as much. Indeed, today, more than 80 percent
of films are distributed digitally vis-à-vis 50 percent in 2010. This digital technology,
apart from securely delivering films in a cost efficient and secure manner across the
country, has also helped cut revenue losses owing to piracy.
The transformation from celluloid to digital has given exhibitors the ability to
improve image and sound quality in their cinemas. Audiences have flocked to enjoy
this high quality content. According to a recent study, it is estimated that this digital
revolution will drive theatrical revenues in India from Rs. 75 billion in 2010 to Rs.101
billion by 2015.
Armed with this digital technology and plans to increase screen
penetration, the centennial Indian cinema industry is ready to
embark on a new era.
