INTRODUCTION

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd is one of the Nine Gems(Navaratna) among Indian Public Sector Unidertakings and the only Indian company to have secured a place in the Hallowed Rolls of the Fortune 500 Corporations of the World. Ever since its inception, IOCL besides providing fuel to the countrys progress has also maintained pace with the most state-of-the-art developments worldwide.

It is Indias largest commercial enterprise ranking 105th on the Fortune Global 500 list in 2009. Indian Oil and its subsidiaries account for 47% share in the petroleum products market, 40% share in refining capacities and 67% downstream sector pipeline capacity in India. The Indian Oil group of companies owns and operates ten of Indias 19 refineries with a combined capacity of 60.2 MMTPA. Guwahati Refinery, the Gangotri of Indian Oil Refineries, is the first refinery commissioned in the 60s. The refinery is designed to process crude tapped from the nearby wells in Assam . With a capacity of 1.0 MMTPA, Guwahati Refinery processes crude oil received from the upper Assam oil fields and caters to the requirements of petroleum products of the North-Eastern region.

HISTORY

Erstwhile Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru dedicated the refinery to the nation on 1st of January 1962 as the first Public Sector Refinery of India. It was established under the aegis of the Indian Oil Company Ltd. However in 1964, Indian Oil Company Ltd was merged with Indian Refineries Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation Limited came into existence.
