DALLAS — With final ap-proval granted from the Dal-las Planning Commission,Dallas Retirement Village ismoving forward with plansfor 40 to 63 more independ-ent living apartments and anew community center.
The expansion will takeplace in two phases on a 5.3-acre empty lot on NorthwestJasper Street, adjacent to cur-rent DRV facilities. Phase 1plans call for building a com-plex with one-bedroom andtwo-bedroom units and a20,000-square-foot diningand activity lodge. One-bed-room apartments will be 850square feet and two-bedroomunits will be 1,500 square feet.
Dave Parrett, DRV’s execu-tive director, said a cam-paign to fill the units willbegin this month. He saidconstruction will begin when70 percent of the apartmentshave commitments. With 80potential residents on a “pri-ority list,” Parrett believesDRV will have enough com-mitments to begin construc-
tion this summer. He said the new apart-
ments will be similar toDRV ’s current “gardenhome” units and builtaround a courtyard setting.The activity center, or lodge,could include such ameni-ties as an arts and crafts
room, a woodworking shopand a fitness center.
The planning commissionapproved the development’ssite plan in December, the laststep needed before DRV couldbegin selling the apartments.
“It’s very exciting, and wewere pleased to see that im-portant step accomplished,”Parrett said.
He said expansion planshad been in the works forseveral years, but plans hadto be placed on hold duringthe recession.
“When things started tocome back alive, we revisitedit again and found there stillwas a need,” Parrett said.“That was a couple yearsago, and we have been mov-ing forward ever since.”
The planning commissionalso approved the site planfor the second phase of thedevelopment, which will addabout 20 to 25 more apart-ments for seniors and addi-tional activity center space.

INDEPENDENCE — Pur-chasing a fire truck is differ-ent from purchasing a car,said Mike Mayfield, divisionchief for Polk County FireDistrict No. 1.
“There’s a base model,but there’s certainly morethings you spec (specify) onit,” he said. “What size tankyou want, what size pumpyou want — there’s a lotmore options.”

One of the things takeninto consideration is howhigh the beds are for pullingfire hoses, Mayfield said.
“We want the hose bednot too high, so people cansafely pull it,” he said.
The district will get fourfire engines, including onecity pumper. The otherthree engines will fight ahouse fire just as well as afield fire, Mayfield said.
“A city pumper you don’tneed to pump and roll be-cause you’re going to begoing off a hydrant,” he said.
A final price on the appa-ratus was not available atpress time, but Mayfieldsaid he expected it to stay inthe $1.5 million range.
“We didn’t add anythinghuge or subtract anythinghuge from what we told tax-payers we were going outfor,” he said.
The bond also has beenspent upgrading life pack
monitors — electrocardio-gram monitors (EKG) —and there is still enoughmoney to replace a chassison one of the older ambu-lances, Mayfield said.
“When we purchased theambulances, we boughtquality ambulances with theidea that we would keep thebox and put a new chassisunder it, a new frame, newengine and new cab,” hesaid. “It’s much cheaper thanbuying a whole new one.”
The general obligationbond is 15 cents per $1,000of assessed value for a totalof $1.98 million.
The five-year operationallevy also approved by votersin May 2014 is expected toraise $200,000 a year for fiveyears. No new positions wereadded with the passing of thelevy, but a position was creat-ed with a promotion fromwithin: Neal Olson was pro-moted from division chief todeputy, or assistant, chief.
Prior to Olson receivingthe new title, the fire districthad three division chiefs,with no clear No. 2 personin command in case the firechief was not available,Olson said.
A deputy chief “wassomething that John (Stein,fire chief) was really pushingfor as we prepare to bring ina new fire chief, that there besomebody in that No. 2 posi-tion,” Olson said.
The fire board will meetThursday at 6 p.m. at Sta-tion 90, 1800 Monmouth St.,Independence. The agendaincludes how the search fora new fire chief will work.
