It may be mentioned that the figures regarding arts andscience are very similar ; in St. Andrews 108 out of 217 wereabsolutely rejected ; in Glasgow, 230 out of 554 ; in Aber-deen, 114 out of 264 ; and in Edinburgh, 254 out of 565.

ffospital Sunday.This has not turned out so well in Glasgow as was

expected, the total from churches and Sunday schoolsamounting only to £3210, an increase of only £1100 overlast year, when no such special effort was made.

Autumn Graduation. Ceremony.The graduation ceremony of Thursday last (Nov. 8th)

was maiked by the capping of two more lady medicalgraduates-Dr. Margaret Dewar and Dr. Elizabeth Lynes,.;,-who received a most enthusiastic ovation from the malestudents present.

Practical Pysiology in the University of Glasgow.With the aid of a munificent grant from the Bellahouston

trustees, who have funds for the promotion chiefly of thehigher education in science in Glasgow, a room in the

physiological department has now been fitted up foradvanced teaching largely upon the model of that in thephysiological laboratory of the University of Oxford. The

apparatus includes a water-motor, which drives a horizontalsteel spindle capable of being connected with a number ofrecording cylinders. There are ten complete sets of elec-trical and recording apparatus, so arranged that two studentswoiking together at each set can study experimentally thephysiology of muscular contraction, nervous action, andthe mechanism of the heart and of the circulation. Specialsets of apparatus for the physiology of the senses and ofthe voice will also be provided. The class of advancedpractical physiology is specially designed for students

preparing to graduate in science, whether taking the passor the honours degree of B.Sc. There seems every pro-bability of the new Ordinances as regards science increasingthe number of candidates in the Scottish Universities forthe degree of B.So., the standard of which is comparablewith that of the honours school in physiology in Oxford andto Part II. of the natural science examinations in Cam-

bridge. This installation may be said to complete the

equipment of the University of Glasgow both as regardsphysiological teaching and the prosecution of research. Theadvanced class, which will meet during the winter session

only, is conducted by Dr. D. Fraser Harris, B.Sc. Lond., thesecond assistant, under the superintendence of ProfessorMcKendrick.Nov. 13th.

IRELAND.(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Small-pox in Dublin.THIS disease is increasing in the south side of the city

and in a large drapery establishment, with 150 personsemployed, sixteen of the assistants were attacked with

small-pox upon the same day, and it is stated that additionalcases have occurred, not only in the shop referred to, but inother establishments. Sir Charles Cameron has furnished adetailed report on the matter in which it is stated that theform of the disease is mild. The same day there were seventy-nine cases in Cork-street Hospital, and the previous weekthere had been thirty-nine fresh cases admitted to the samehospital.

Dublin Hospital Saturday.The board of directors of the City of Dublin Hospital, in

conjunction with the ladies’ committee, propose to initiate aSaturday collection in aid of the funds of the hospital.Hospital Saturday is a recognised institution in Cork andBelfast. In the former the subscriptions are divided amongthe various hospitals ; but the City of Dublin Hospitalauthorities appear to desire to monopolise the proceeds fortheir hospital alone, not allocating any portion to otherinstitutions. It is to be hoped they will reconsider the matter.

Cork Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital.The bazaar and fancy fair which was recently held in

Cork under the name of " Donnybrook Fair " has proved adecided success. I am informed that from the fete held asum of close on C3500 has been obtained. In consequenceof the energy, ability, and interest shown in the undertakingby Lady Arnott, it has been proposed by a member of thecorporation of Cork that a full-sized portrait of Lady Amottshould be placed in the board room of the institution.

Catlzolic University llffedical School Medical and ScientificSociety.

At a general meeting of the above society, held last weekat the Medical School, Professor A. Roche was elected pre-sident and Dr. E. McWeeney vice-president. The inauguralmeeting will be held on Monday, the 19th inst., when thepresident will deliver an address.

Proposed Hospital Sunday in Cork -District.The Diocesan Synod of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross, Church of

Ireland, have passed a resolution requesting the Bishop to setapart one Sunday in the year to be designated "HospitalSunday " and to have special collections made for hospitalswithin the united diocese, the sa:d collections to be dis-tributed in such a manner as the Diocesan Council mayapprove.

Health of -Dublin : S’eptember Quarter.The births registered in the Dublin registration district

during the quarter ending Sept. 29ch last numbered 2473and the deaths 1816, or 20 8. The deaths for last quarterwere 30 under the average for the September quaiter,Zymotic diseases caused 224 deaths, being 158, or 41 percent., below the average for the third quarter of the past tenyears ; and this decline may be attributed to the almost com-plete immunity from fatal cases of measles and the compara-tively low number of deaths from diarrhoea,. During thequarter 17 fatal cases of small-pox were registered ; 12 ofthese were unvaccinated. Typhoid fever caused 35 deaths,which is about the average number, and typhus fever 3deaths, which is below the average. Influenza caused 4deaths, liydrophobia 1, and diphtheria none.

Mr. R. L. S 7van will be a candidate for the Vice-Presidencyof the Royal College of Surgeons in 1896.
