In Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191, we are committed to creating a learning environment that allows all students to excel. When it comes to technology, this means more than one thing.

First, there is the technology that teachers and students use every day to enhance learning. Including iPads, interactive white boards, social media and much more, these instructional technologies are incredibly important. They allow students to learn in ways they are accustomed and provide teachers with tools to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently.

Second, there are technology learning opportunities that might lead to careers for our students. Whether its video produc-tion or writing code, our students are gaining skills that will ensure they are real-world ready.

This calendar highlights a few of the ways our schools, students and teachers are using technology to deliver on our mission, and you can learn more online at www.isd191.org.

ABOUT THIS CALENDAR: This District 191 calendar and directory was published in August 2013 with information available at that time. For the most current information, check your child’s school newsletter or website.

The calendar was sent to families with children ages 4 to 18 (or through grade 12) in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191, to families of open enrollment students, and others by request.

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.

~ Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! Thank you for welcoming me to the ISD 191 community as your new Superintendent of Schools. I have quickly learned the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage communities are filled with eager students, caring parents and supportive community members. All of our staff members and leaders are committed to your children and ensuring that they are prepared for the rapidly changing 21st Century.

As stated above, we can build our youth for the future. Our community must continue to work in harmony and develop a collective commitment to ensure all of our youth have oppor-tunities for success. Successful communities build coalitions, communicate frequently and embrace diverse perspectives while working together.

Our students have endless opportunities to develop well-rounded skills, a passion for learning and con-fidence in their bright futures. Our staff members meet all students where they are and support their continual growth.

Outside of our classrooms, in collaboration with our communities, our goal is for each student to partici-pate in some form of structured activity. These experiences are very much an extension of our classrooms and provide students opportunities to showcase their talents, develop leadership skills and be part of a team — all traits that will benefit them as adults in the workplace and as members of their community.

Thank you for sharing your children with us. We are honored that you have entrusted us with their education.

Have a great school year!

Joe Gothard Superintendent of Schools

Superintendent’s message: Together, we’ll build our youth for the future

What’s new in our schools? New faces at four elementary schools will include new elementary principals: Drew Goeldner at Sky Oaks, Barbara Borer at Rahn, Shannon McParland at Sioux Trail and Erika Nesvig at Harriet Bishop.

District 191 also has a new superintendent, Joe Gothard, and assistant superintendent, Cindy Amoroso.

Our partnership with Headway Emotional Health Services is expanding to make a total of 13 mental health professionals available in the schools. This emotional support for students helps remove obstacles to their learning.

Burnsville High School is looking great following a second summer of renovation. The Mraz Center for Performing Arts has new seating and flooring. The school’s cafeteria is also being updated to better serve students. Remodeling work at the school will finish up during summer 2014.

A string instrument program will start up at Rahn Elementary School of Arts & Technology, as a new opportunity for students.

The district’s recycling and composting program will expand to Gideon Pond and Vista View elementary schools, Burnsville High School, the Administrative Services Center and Diamondhead Education Center. It was implemented at all other schools last year. Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s also saving money on garbage disposal costs.

Superintendent Joe gothard was among Rockin’ Readers in a summer program sponsored by District 191 Community Education to encour-age a love of reading in young children. gothard and elementary principals took turns reading every week over the summer in Nicollet Commons Park in Burnsville.

At Burnsville High School, students have the opportunity to pursue engineering and design studies through several “Project Lead the Way” courses. This nationally renowned curriculum introduces students to engineering and scientific concepts that will help them solve design problems.

In addition, students use state-of-the-art 3D modeling design software, which allows them to more fully realize their solutions and prepares them for work they’ll do in college and beyond. Students can even earn college credits.

Personalized Learning

In a classroom, finding ways to reach everyone at his or her level can be a challenge. At Harriet Bishop Elementary, teachers are using iPads combined with a reading program called Raz-Kids to do just that … and with some very positive results.

Teachers say students are enthused about using the iPads, but the biggest payback is that they allow for individualized learn-ing, especially when combined with Raz-Kids.

Welcome back!School starts Sept. 3 for most students.

As part of the District 191 Improving Student Achievement Through Technology (ISATT) initiative, Sky Oaks Elementary teachers are using an iPad app called “Socrative,” which acts as a student response system, to conduct quick assessments of students during math units. These types of assessments are called “formative,” and they help teachers differentiate instruc-tion for each student because they know immediately whether a student is understanding a concept, rather than waiting until the end of a unit when all instruction is done. By using Socra-tive, teachers can gather feedback from all students quickly and efficiently.

“The iPads allow us to do quick assessments, get immediate results, and have a record of the results,” explained teacher Paul Berge. “This quick and immediate feedback allows us to tailor our instruction to better differentiate our lessons.”

Perhaps nowhere is the meeting of technology and real-world skills more apparent than in the Burnsville High School video production program. From concept to post-production, these students are learning and putting into practice skills that will translate directly to their chosen field. Their weekly television news show is broadcast throughout the school, with students filling roles behind the camera, behind the anchor desk and in the production booth. Students also produce stand-alone videos including short films, public safety announcements, and commercials.

In 2012-13, BHS students won six Upper Midwest Student Production Awards from the National Academy of Televi-sion Arts and Sciences at a ceremony April 14. Junior Scott Svare (at right) was the most awarded student at the event, bringing home five awards himself.

<title>Create through Code</title>As important as it is to be able to use technology, maybe even more important for today’s students is to be able to create with technolo-gy. From computer program-ming classes at the high school to coding clubs at elementary schools, District 191 students are on top of it. Burnsville High School senior Tarissa Jackson (pictured) was one of just six to win the first annual Minnesota Aspirations for Women in Computing Award in 2013.

TransportationDistrict 191 contracts with Durham School Services to provide busing for ap-proximately 60 percent of its students. To ensure student safety, Durham School Services employs only qualified, trained drivers and uses a rigorous ongoing evaluation process. All vehicles used to transport students are inspected annu-ally by the Minnesota State Patrol.

Kindergarten and elementary students must live one mile or more from their as-signed school to be bused. Junior and senior high students are transported to-gether and must live 1.5 miles or more from their assigned schools to be eligible for transportation. In addition, senior high students must register for service.

Drivers complete conduct reports for students who behave inappropriately on the bus and forward them to school principals. The district reserves the right to deny transportation service to students with a history of behavior problems. For more information, call the transportation department at 952/707-2067 or 952/707-2069.

Food services

The Food Service Department participates annually in the National School Breakfast and School Lunch Program. This program makes a nutritious breakfast and lunch meal available at a reasonable cost. Students and staff of District 191 are offered a number of breakfast and lunch options at reasonable prices: $1.40 for a student breakfast and $2.00 for an adult breakfast; $2.35 for an elementary student lunch, $2.45 for a secondary student lunch, $.40 for a reduced student lunch, $3.55 for an adult lunch, and $.45 for milk.

Free or reduced-priced meals are available for children who qualify. If a family quali-fies for free or reduced meals, an Application for Educational Benefits must be com-pleted each school year and submitted to the Food Service Department for review and approval. Applying for Free and Reduced price meals is available online! The process is safe, secure, private, and available, anytime, anywhere. Go to http://www.schoollunchapp.com.

Parents and guardians can manage their children’s food service accounts via SchoolView/FeePay the parent portal in District 191. For information about SchoolView/FeePay, go to www.isd191.org

Healthier School Meals

All breakfasts and lunches are prepared in accordance with standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture and reflect today’s emphasis on healthier menus. All meals offer a variety of selections each day and include whole grains, lean meats/meat alternates, fresh fruits and vegetables and low fat dairy products. Salads and deli sandwiches are available at all schools for the same price as a traditional lunch. Menus are posted on the District website at www.isd191.org and are available in each school. If bringing food or beverages from home, it’s better if they are nutri-tious ones.

Under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (passed by Congress in January 2012) schools offer more fruits and vegetables in an effort to increase consumption. To qualify for the “complete meal” students must have at least ½ cup portion of a fruit, vegetable or combination of both on their lunch tray. Students need to make sure they have at least 3 different food groups on their tray with the fruit or vegetable being one of the food groups. Federal regulations require meals to be priced as a complete unit and students must pay the full price even if they did not choose the complete meal. Students are encouraged to take all of the food items offered, as do-ing so provides a balanced meal for the best price.

For more information, please call 952/707-2051.

Employees of the YearDistrict 191 employees provide the highest quality service and support to students, families and the community. The district recognizes those who go above and be-yond each year. The 2013 District 191 Employees of the Year are, from left: Lori Hu-berty, food service at Metcalf Junior High in Burnsville; Myron Schuur, district-wide maintenance; and Sherry Gilbertson, educational assistant at Vista View Elementary in Burnsville. Congratulations and thanks to them.

Student Data Privacy PolicyThe Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 Board of Education policy requires the district to comply with the Federal Family Rights and Privacy Act and the Min-nesota Government Data Practices Act.

In District 191, educational data are recorded on individual students in areas related to health, academic progress, attendance, testing and special education. Most infor-mation in education records is considered private and available only to the student, the student’s parents/guardians if the student is not yet 18 years old, and to the school staff who need the data to provide services to the student, unless permission is granted by the student or parent/guardian.

However, according to state and federal guidelines, information that is considered to be directory information may be released to the public without permission of the student or parent/guardian. This includes:

• Student’s name• Gender• Address• Telephone number• Participation in officially recognized activities and sports• Weight and height of members of athletic teams• Degrees and awards received• Photographs for school-approved publications, newspapers and videotapes.

If a student or parent/guardian does not wish any or all of this information to be made public, she can “opt out” by notifying her school principal in writing within 30 days of publication of this notice.

If the decision is made to opt out, then the student will be excluded from all pub-lished information including:

• Honor rolls• Programs for concerts and theater performances• Athletic programs• Yearbooks• Press releases, etc.

Asbestos management in schoolsMinnesota school districts are annually required to inform residents and employees of the presence of asbestos-containing materials in their buildings. All District 191 buildings have been inspected for asbestos under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986. Some asbestos-containing building materials were found in every build-ing except Eagle Ridge Junior High, Harriet Bishop Elementary, Hidden Valley Elementary and the district warehouse/maintenance garage.

A management plan has been submitted to the Minnesota Department of Education and is available at each school. A complete report for all district facilities is on file in the district’s Operations and Properties Office.

Asbestos-containing materials were commonly used in past years in commercial build-ings as a fire retardant. In schools, asbestos was typically found in floor tile, ceiling tile, in-sulation and wraps of pipes and boilers. Such materials pose a potential for asbestos fiber release only if the asbestos-containing materials are disturbed in some way. Exposure to airborne asbestos has been found to relate to several forms of cancer.

Nearly all materials in district buildings identified as containing asbestos have been removed with the completion of renovation projects in recent years. Areas that still have asbestos-containing materials are monitored for change or damage. Buildings are rein-spected by a certified asbestos inspector every three years. For more information about asbestos containment, contact ISD 191 Director of Operations and Properties, at 952/707-2035.

Parents’ Right to know LawThe Parents’ Right to Know Law requires school districts to inform parents and employees about the use of pest control materials. District 191 utilizes licensed, professional service firms for the prevention and control of insects and rodents inside buildings while trained staff members prevent and control weeds on school grounds.

All materials used are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are selected and applied according to label directions. The long-term health effects on children from the application of pest control materials, or the class of materials to which they belong, may not be fully understood.

Parents may request to receive, at their expense, prior notification of any application of a pest control material should such an application be deemed necessary on a day different from those specified in the schedule.

For more information about the use of pest control materials, contact ISD 191 Direc-tor of Operations and Properties Glenn Simon at 952/707-2035.
