Welcome to the GelSympo2003. Since the 1st Gel Symposium held in 1989, the Gel

Symposium has been held non-periodically in order to stimulate worldwide communication

about Gel Science. The 5th Gel Symposium aims to give an overview of the major advances

in polymer gels in order to design novel types of gels and to inspire new concepts, by

international and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among different scientific communities.

Polymer gels have been closely related to our life for thousands of years. However, it has

passed only a few decades since polymer gels have been spotlighted from scientific point of

view. Though remarkable scientific and technological advancement in gel science has been

made in recent years, polymer gels remain as intriguing and promising materials. It is well

known that polymer gels are widely applied to daily life as well as to industry, such as super-

absorbent, ion-exchange resins, water retainers, drug delivery systems. However, the

fundamental problems in chemistry and physics of polymer gels, namely, precise control of

gels architecture, entanglements, and heterogeneities, have not been fully elucidated. Today,

nano-fabrication of gels is highly demanded for µTAS (Lab-on-a-Chip) manufacturing and

biological application.

It is quite meaningful to hold this symposium at the one of the largest centers of solid state

physics in Japan, i.e., the Institute for Solid State Physics (ISSP), as it will trigger an inter-

disciplinary exchange of ideas between soft matter and hard matter sciences.

The Research Group on Polymer Gels has a privilege to serve you at the new campus of The

University of Tokyo, Kashiwa Campus.

Chairman of Organizing Committee

Preparation of Preprints

The scientists who make oral or poster presentations at the GelSympo2003 are requested to

submit the camera-ready manuscripts of the preprints. The book of preprints will be prepared

by offset printing directly from the manuscripts. A template is available for download from

the GelSympo2003 Website. The manuscript must be typed on the A4 letter size paper.

Preprints should be prepared to fit on 2 sheets for Plenary and Invited Lectures and on 1

sheet for Contributed Lectures and Posters. The typed scripts (the original only) should

be transformed to a PDF® file and sent by e-mail to [email protected] by

September 1, 2003. Authors who have difficulties in sending their preprints by e-mail might

contact GelSympo2003 Secretariat. More details are available on the GelSympo2003

Website.

Proceedings

Proceedings of Plenary Lectures, Invited Lectures, Contributed Papers, and Posters will be

published as a “digital proceeding.” Power Point® files provided by each active participant

will be edited and transformed to PDF® files and will be distributed to all of the active

participants. The details will be announced on the GelSympo2003 Website.
