HOLIDAY CLOSING
The COA will be closed
Monday, May 27 for
Memorial Day
From the Director...
Tim
The COA has a lot of great events scheduled in May, if you’re looking for something new to try
or just want to get out of the house, visit one of our enrichment centers and learn how the
COA keeps St. Joseph County seniors flourishing.
The construction of the Rivers Enrichment Center and Residence continues to move along on
schedule. The community support for this unique project has been great; we appreciate the
questions and excitement that the project has generated. 23 of our 46 apartments are pre-
leased and these seniors are excited to move in! That means that we still have 23 apartments
available for other seniors who may be interested, if you are considering simplifying and are
interested in an apartment, please give us a call. A model apartment will be available the
second week in May and we’ll schedule a time to see it for those interested in leasing an
apartment. Here’s a couple photos of our progress:

VOLUNTEER Spotlight
Amber is a COA aide providing homemaking, personal care and respite care to our seniors in their homes. Amber is a mother of two teenagers and is currently finishing up her bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
She says that the best part about working for the COA is that she loves to help people any way she can, and she finds value in helping seniors stay independent in their homes.
We appreciate Amber being available to substitute for clients in need of services on short notice as well as her availability to help teach new staff!
Our in home aides are making a difference in the lives of seniors everyday by providing exceptional services. Thank you for all your hard work Amber, we appreciate you!
AIDE ACCOLADE Amber Canfield
Spend a few minutes talking to Three Rivers resident Mary Bennett and a few things become obvious. Mary loves her community, the COA
and most of all she loves her family.
A longtime resident of Three Rivers, Mary has volunteered or been involved with just about every organization
in the community, from the Three Rivers Hospital Auxiliary to the schools, to local theater, to the Commission
on Aging. Mary volunteers often at the COA, especially helping out in the kitchen and with Bingo.
“I like to help wherever they need help,” she said.
And she especially enjoys helping out at the COA because of all that it has to offer.
“I really enjoy the people here,” she noted. “And I love all the activities and exercise classes that are available.”
Volunteering comes naturally to her Mary said because she likes people so much and it keeps her busy.
“I get a lot of satisfaction from helping out because the people I help have so much to give to me,” she said.
“I love hearing their stories of their past and what their life was like.”
And, she added, it means a lot to her to give back to organizations that helped her when she needed support.
When she isn’t volunteering or going to see local theater productions, Mary can be found visiting her children, including 13 grandchildren
and one great grandchild.
Thanks for all you do to help the COA and the surrounding community Mary. We are lucky to have you!
May Movies - Staff Picks! May 1 - Alpha (chosen by Kim - our Three Rivers receptionist)
In the prehistoric past, a young man struggles to return home after being separated from his tribe during a buffalo
hunt. He finds a similarly lost wolf companion and starts a friendship that would change humanity.
Kim says she loved this movie because she loves wolves and it has a great ending.
May 8 - The Sound of Music (chosen by Tim - our CEO)
A woman leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the children of a
Naval officer widower.
Tim says he loves this movie not only because it’s a great story with wonderful music,
but because he watched it every Christmas with his Grandma.
May 15 - A Few Good Men (chosen by Ruth - our Life Enrichment Manager)
Military lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, played by Tom Cruise, defends Marines
accused of murder. They contend they were acting under orders.
Ruth says she loves this movie because it is a great story with wonderful acting.
She loves good courtroom dramas.
May 22 - Les Miserables (chosen by Serena - our Meals on Wheels Coordinator)
Jean Valjean, known as Prisoner 24601, is released from prison and breaks parole to create a new life for himself while
evading the grip of the persistent Inspector Javert. Set in post-revolutionary France, the story reaches resolution
against the background of the June Rebellion.
Serena says she first read the book and then saw the movie and loved it. She loves musicals.
May 29 - Mary Poppins (chose by Nicki - our Residential Services Manager)
In turn of the century London, a magical nanny employs music and adventure to help two neglected children become
closer to their father.
Nicki says she loves this movie and remembers watching it often as a child

Members of the COA Sew & Sews have been busy making quilts that
they donated to Sturgis Hospital. The quilts are given to senior patients
as well as patients who are at the hospital for infusion treatments. The
patients are able to take the quilts home with them. What a wonderful
idea! So far, the group has donated 12 quilts and is working on more.
Pictured from left to right are Betty Persons, Chianne Vaughan and
Diana Strudwick. Not pictured are Mary Ellen Blasius and Pat Reed,
both also helped to make the quilts.
