There 's a dory behind cadet training that is
heard only in barracks and in the little g roups on
the flight line.
The riory's t itle is WASHOUT.
It's tough to read it on the faces and to hear
it told , and it' s tougher to lose those boys. They
swea ted o ut the first "o4" with us, ate the dust of
Basic Training , and made C.T.O. a better place to
be. They had the good times on Open Post, and
they walked their tours, or got out of them. They
laughed a nd took the training on the chin, and
through it all , they hoped and tried as hard as we.
They spent 9 long months wait ing and working
for their first ride. Then the pace caught up with
them, and th6y were men enough to know it, and
take it.
We aren't any better men or soldiers because
we managed to stay on. We're all in this war to
get out of it as soon as we can.-So to the friend1>
and comrades who are now in some other branch
of service, we dedicate this book.
Mr. Hammill knows the flying business from years of experience. He w .. a member of the R.A.F. in the last war when the planes were truly " Maytags." An ace on his particular field of aviaticn after the first war, he's on the beam ag~in, this time with e very fine sehool. To him, we give the highest army praise--"A gocd deal."
Phil1dtlphi1, Penn•ylvania claims tllis qentl•m•n ... native \On. But the lure or flyin9, and the r .. litalion that a job had lo be don~, direeted Captain Freedman's fookh-ps to the Air Corps. That was early in 1941.
Sir.c,., th~n, our "C.O." ;,d, come to know pilot tr1inin9 in ik enti-ety.
He 1fhindtd Primary Sehool at Tulsa, OU1hom '· N\ic 1t Randolph, and Advanced •t Kelly Field, Texas. from which h~ 9raduatod with Clau '41 -H. As an lnslniclor, " C~eck Pilot, and a membrr or th.,. Prim•ry Standarditation Board, he proved his executive ability.
His last move was to Coleman, and we're ~u mighty thMkful for it. We of +f.I hail him ts a ')tntleman, •n Officer, ,, Ryt'r, and a damn fine Commanding Officer.

They cnew, they rave, they holler-r~nt To them there's n~ such word ilS c:.:i n t They plead, cajcle-beg, cry And say if we care, why not try? They take us i11 hand green .:ind rawGivo us rules-lay down the law. Most words tney use c,.n't be quoted But we know too well they're not sugar coated They start us off so easy ;ind slow Then snaps and spins-our green color grows With bucket in hand we do our chore And gasping and gulping we vow never more. The next day, we find, isn't too bad There .::re actually days we're really sad To see clouds forming ~nd then rain fall And know we c.>n't practice the spin and stall. Then the day arrives all too quickly When he climbs out and you feel sickly. " Take 'er up alone" he says witn a grin And you kinda regret all those past sins. Rudder and torque, what was it he said 1 And where did he say I should keep my head? Let's sP.e, I climb andturn and look 3round But whbre am I in respect to the ground? The tee, the field, the pattern and wind-Then you're back again to the times that you've sinned. Cut throttle, back pressure. flaps, slow bank, What time is it now, should I chenge the tank 1 Easy! Easy now, here comes the field No turning hack, your fate is sealed. Stick back, a bounce, now keep 'er straight You' re downJ It stoos-look around-wait, Now ta•i over to where he stands A slight frown, but happy. pillow in hand. Back to the station house, buy him a coko Loosen your chin strap, light up a smoke. You know him now as never before Your mutual friend is the motor's roar.
