Speak at IUDM
Ryan White, a teenager from Kokomo, Ind., contracted HIV/AIDS through an infected supply of a drug used to help his hemophilia. Doctors said he posed no risk to other students; however, AIDS was poorly understood at the time and Ryan was ridiculed for carrying the disease. Ryan stayed strong and spoke out, combating misconceptions and calling for compassionate treatment for all AIDS sufferers. Ryan survived with the disease from 1984-1991 and passed away his senior year in high school. He had planned to attend Indiana University. In Ryan’s memory, Jill Stuart created the inaugural IUDM in the fall of 1991. About IUDMIndiana University Dance Marathon, started 22 years ago in memory of Ryan White, has grown to become the 2nd largest student-run philan-thropy in the nation. Nearly 800 students work year round helping to put on various events for the families at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, fundraise, and organize the Marathon itself. The hard work culminates into a 36-hour Marathon every fall. During the weekend of the event over 1,600 dancers choose to remain awake and standing throughout the 36 hours in honor of the children at Riley who are unable. IUDM’s success relies on the continuous support of students, alumni, the community, corporate sponsors, Indiana University, and most importantly the Riley families themselves. On behalf of IUDM, thank you for making hope happen at Riley Hospital for Children. For The Kids,Julie Troyer2012 IU Dance Marathon President
