I‘ve been volunteering as a Trustee for Leeds Mencap, a Leeds charity working with children and adults with learning disabilities and difficulties for 2 years now. It’s really interesting – I got involved initially because of my background in marketing and communications, which they needed some support with.

But it’s since introduced me to a much wider perspective on running a small charity, providing services for children and adult, finance and accounting, fundraising and more. We’ve just recently agreed as a board to pursue developing the charity, the services we offer and our premises in the form of a big capital build project over the next 2-5 years, for which we’ll need to secure over £1m in sponsorship, grants and through fundraising so it’s an exciting time to be involved.

Through building new, larger community premises we hope to be able to improve and build on the services we already deliver to children and their families, develop new services and provide space for the local community. It’s really rewarding to see the work they do with children and adults and the difference it makes to them and their families; and has given me a different perspective on Leeds and the organisations and businesses here.
A plan packed with
promise and potential

Can you help? Please...
We’re recruiting for many different roles – including some new trustees – at the moment. We meet monthly, for around two hours on an evening, to debate and take decisions on the direction of the charity, the finances, recruitment and services and of course with the capital build project on the horizon it’s an exciting time to get involved and would be great experience.
It’s certainly helped
broaden my skills
and knowledge
If you are interested in finding out more about supporting Leeds Mencap – including being a trustee – please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. Leeds Mencap is based at Londesboro Terrace, East End Park, LS9 9NE.
