“Would Jesus ask something of us
that couldn’t be done?
“At the center of all the biblical
commands and at the very core of
‘everything I have commanded you’
(Matthew 28:20), Jesus declares
that we are to love God with
everything we’ve got and love our
neighbors in the same way that wecherish ourselves.
“Really? Is this possible?
“The energy behind the writing
of this curriculum comes from an
insight that is quite frankly embar-
rassing. It is embarrassing because
I should know better. At first, the
insight doesn’t seem very dramatic.
In fact, every time I have shared
this personal ‘revelation’ with others
Greg Ogden (D.Min., Fuller Theological Seminary) is exec-
utive pastor of discipleship at Christ Church of Oak Brook
in Oak Brook, Illinois. Previously he was academic director
of the doctor of ministry program and associate profes-
sor of lay equipping and discipleship at Fuller Theological
Seminary in Pasadena, California.
I have been sheepishly apologetic.
But here is the amazing truth: Jesus
actually thinks we can become like him.
Jesus actually believes that it is pos-
sible for frail and deeply flawed
human beings to focus our com-
plete affection on God and others.
“The key word here for me is
possible. I had unconsciously given
up the possibility of actually doingwhat Jesus commanded. No, I
had never consciously thought or
said, ‘Jesus, I think you’re an ide-
alistic dreamer,’ or ‘Jesus, you can
only expect so much from flawed
humanity.’ I was not even aware
that I had dismissed Jesus’ belief
in me. But what had taken over my
spirit in my attempt to be authentic
was a focus on where I had fallenshort of Jesus’ call. In my desire to
make sure that I was not deceiving
myself about my capacity for sin, I
had given up the upside possibility
that the character of Jesus could
actually take over my life.”
“Greg Ogden has once again taken the com-
plex subject of Christian discipleship and
made it truly understandable and personally
applicable. After reading this book, you will
wonder why more authors have not made
the Great Commandment of Jesus their
central focus.”
—Daniel Meyer, senior pastor of
Christ Church of Oak Brook

Rev. Dr. Simon Vibert is vice principal and director of the School of
Preaching at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. As one of John Stott’s Langham trainers,
Vibert has equipped pastors in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Serbia and Haiti.
He is the author of Lives Jesus Changed and The Diamond Marriage.
how they wow us
Simon Vibert has analyzed some
of the best preachers on the scene
today to uncover the dynamics
of successful preaching. Gleaning
practical principles from each case,
Vibert profiles Tim Keller, John
Piper, Vaughan Roberts, Simon
Ponsonby, J. John, David Cook,
Nicky Gumbel, Rico Tice, Alistair
Begg, Mark Driscoll, Mark Dever
and John Ortberg.
“As someone who has been preaching for
almost seventeen years, I discovered that my
views on preaching were both confirmed and
challenged by reflecting on this book.”
— Jim Belcher, author of Deep Church
“This book seeks to assist preach-
ers and hearers alike to make the
very most of the worldwide reach of
today’s pulpit ministry.
“One result of the World Wide
Web is that it has greatly enhanced
our ability to lend our ears to
preachers beyond our local church
pastor. However, this new media
also raises some important ques-tions. . . .
“With a click of the mouse I may
hear John Piper, Mark Driscoll,
Tim Keller, Vaughan Roberts and
countless other good preachers, but
how can I do that profitably? . . .
“What does their Internet min-
istry have to do with the local
church, or my pastor, or your
preaching? Or more pointedly, isit possible to learn from the best
preachers without devaluing the
rather more ordinary week-in,
week-out preaching of the local
church? . . .
“My sustenance as a Christian,
throughout my late teens and early
twenties, came mostly from hearing
cassettes of Dick Lucas: recordings
of twenty-minute sermons preached
to a congregation at St. Helen’s
Bishopsgate in the city of London.
Dick set the standard high, and
still he makes me want to preach in
such a way that the Bible becomes
crystal clear to the congregation. But he also did something else for
me: his sermons nourished me and
drove me back into my small local
congregation to live with all the
foibles and inadequacies of much
of the preaching which was offered,
and to a fresh appreciation of what
it was to be related to one another
in Christ.
“The best preachers make youstrive for Christlikeness and value
the great things that God is doing
in his church. I hope that you
too can reach this conclusion as
we carefully examine the twelve
preachers I have selected.”
