FAMILY LITERACY DAY
Family Literacy Day 2015 is Tuesday, January 27th
Family literacy refers to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills, from enjoying a storybook together at bedtime and during the day, to playing with word games, singing, writing to a relative or friend, sharing day-to-day tasks such as making a shopping list or using a recipe, and surfing the Internet for fun and interesting sites (Family Literacy in Canada: Profiles of Effective Practices, Adele Thomas, Soleil Publishing Inc., 1998).
Research shows children have a better chance of becoming fully literate adults if reading is encouraged in the home (Literacy BC).
Establishing a culture of learning encourages an exchange of
ideas, enriches family relationships, and bolsters confidence and independent thinking.
(Quotes from :http://abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/family-literacy-facts-stats)
The Library will be celebrating all week (Jan 27-31) and will have fun games and information on how to improve Literacy in
your family. Stop by to see what we have prepared for you!
For more ideas and tips visit: http://abclifeliteracy.ca/fld/15-minutes-of-fun
WALKING PROGRAM
In partnership with Alberta Health Services, we would like to introduce a new program to help you become more active! Starting January 20th through March 31st
you can walk designated routes throughout the Library hallways! It has been recommended to use a pedometer to help increase your activity levels. You may borrow one of our pedometers to track your progress. The routes will even include the challenge of stair climbing! This makes a significant contribution to the 30 minutes of exercise we all need every day! Keep up with those Physical resolutions you made for the New Year, and enjoy doing it! Everyone is welcome! This program will be available to the public during regular Library hours. For more information, please call us. Pedometers are available on a first come, first served basis.
Looking for a way to relax and have some down time with the family? Come for a movie, stay for the FREE popcorn and a
drink!

We are looking for New Library Board Members!
.
Public library boards have five primary roles:
1. Advocate for the library and library users.
To be a library advocate is to work for the betterment of library services for everyone
in our communities. Advocacy includes working to obtain adequate funding for the
library; pursuing opportunities to meet and speak with community groups; presenting
library items to the mayor and town council; making sure the community’s needs and
interests are paramount when making board decisions.
2. Planning for the future of the library.
Planning is one of the most important trusts that the community gives to the library
board. Planning is deciding what is going to happen with library services over the
next few years. Determining the direction of the library through service responses
and insuring that it is responsive to what our community needs.
3. Oversee the effectiveness of the library.
The community puts its trust in the library board to make sure the library is
operating the way it should. The board monitors financial reports and approves all
expenditures. The board reviews and approves the annual report for the Library
Services Branch of Municipal Affairs which includes a survey of library user
satisfaction levels with the services received from the library.
4. Set library policies. (Policy is a carefully designed, broadly stated written guideline for
actions and decisions of the library.)
The library board spends much of its time on policy issues - developing policies to
meet the changing operational needs of the library. Once adopted by the board,
library staff carries out the policies on a day-to-day basis.
5. Work with the director, respecting each other’s roles.
The board oversees and works with the director to ensure effective management of
staff and resources for consistent operations and in the best interests of those the
library serves.
Our Board meets once a month. If you think this is a good fit for yourself or anyone you know, please contact Linda at:
