HAPPENINGSTOGETHER IN MISSIONS, MINISTRY AND FELLOWSHIP

JANUARY 7, 2018

Membership MattersHave you recently joined HBBC or are you prayerfully considering becoming a member? Are you seeking more information about deepening your relationship with Christ? Do you desire more information about how to join the church or how to find a place of service? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you would be a perfect candidate for Membership Matters: a 5-week discussion group that deals with all of these issues. Susan Hailey, Betty Boyce and Nancy Graybeal serve as facilitators for the class. You can still be part of this class! The class meets on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM in Room 106. Contact Christine Moore in the church office ([email protected]) for details.

Deacon OrdinationToday at 3:00 PM on your calendar we will ordain and install our new Deacons who begin their three year service in 2018. What a special time it will be in the life of the church!

If you would like to purchase a copy of Disciplines, they are available in the church office. Regular print edition are sold for $11, and the large print edition are $13.

Women’s Prayer TriadsThis year, we are encouraging women of all ages to gather a couple of friends and commit to pray together. These prayer triads or groups will gather at least once a month on their own schedules to pray for each other’s needs and to pray for the needs of our church, our city and our world. Whether you are a new prayer triad, or an established prayer group, we would love to connect with you. Please go to www.hbbc.org/prayertriads and register your prayer triad (or group), as we would love to send a small gift of encouragement to each woman who participates.

School of Music Registration OpenRegistration has opened for Spring 2018 School of Music lessons. Lessons are available for piano, guitar, voice, flute, oboe, brass and more. To find out more about School of Music, or to register, go to www.hbbc.org/schoolofmusic.

Endowed Orchestra ChairsThis past summer the Hayes Barton Deacon Board affirmed a recommendation by our Music Council to accept contributions for the establishment of Endowed Orchestra chairs for church. The location of our church, the accessibility of professional musicians in the Triangle region, and the overwhelming response of our congregation to excellent orchestral music practically guarantees the success of this program.

The Hayes Barton Orchestra was organized in 2016 and is already having tremendous success. Generosity, virtuosity, and the power of sacred music may be just one more path toward spiritual transformation. Contact Larry Dickens ([email protected]) for more information about Endowed Orchestra Chairs.

Backpack BuddiesWe supply students at Partnership Elementary who are identified as food-insecure with a bag of groceries each week. Backpack Buddies aims to provide these students with access to nutritious foods that are easy for children to prepare. We meet periodically to assemble bags, so look out for these dates in the Happenings. Other ways to volunteer include shopping for food and bag delivery. For more information or to volunteer, contact Emily Patton ([email protected]).

Partnership VolunteersCan you give one hour at 11:00 each week to help a child? Partnership Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help in their Kindergarten classes each day during this time. Experience isn’t necessary, just a little time to assist and work with a child is needed. Contact Kristen Muse for more information.

Blanket and coat DrivePlease bring new or gently used blankets and coats to be donated to Urban Ministries and SONShine in the Park to help neighbors in need during the winter months. Place donated items in the bin at the Welcome Center. Thank you for giving. We will be collecting items through January 2018.

Wheels for HopeIn 2016, the Triangle Wheels4Hope location placed 154 program cars with recipients referred from our local partner agencies. Our annual campaigns were a success as we joyfully placed cars and raised support for our mission. In addition, 116 retail cars were sold to the public to provide financial support for our mission. We have high hopes of placing 200 program cars in 2017. With your continued commitment we will make this happen! If you have a vehicle that you no longer need or know someone who might be willing to donate their unused vehicle please contact: www.wheels4hope.org or call 919-832-1941.

Small Tasks, Big ImpactRonald McDonald House provides lodging to the families of children in need of long term medical care. By collecting the tabs off of soda cans, they have raised $15,000 this year toward that goal. Please save your can tabs, and place them in the cabinet drawer under the counter across from the elevator in the main hallway. We are also collecting the Box Tops for Education, in order to purchase supplies needed by schools. These small tasks can have a big impact on families in our community.

CBF “Missions Bite”Translation for the TranslatorOne Sunday in Moldova I saw a beautiful example of cultivating Beloved Community. Usually, when I am there, someone translates the worship services from Romanian for me--the pastor’s wife Olesea or a young person like Dana. This helps me participate in the faith community. But what happens when a Romany pastor preaches in his own language? A Romany woman from the pew behind Olesea and Dana leaned forward and translated for the translators.

In Case of EmergencyThe Crisis Management Committee has created a quick glance guide to help members, visitors and guests know how to react in case of emergency during worship, church-wide activities, and normal business hours. These guides have been placed at the Welcome Center, in the main hall information station, and in the pews. If you have any questions about the emergency procedures, please contact Kristen Muse ([email protected]).

A Class to Consider: Noah’s Ark ClassNoah’s Ark is a friendly, welcoming Sunday School class serving couples and singles in their 40s-50s. When you look around the room, you will see church members who are very active in church and community life. We like to roll up our sleeves and get INVOLVED in church with outreach, missions, children’s ministry, the diaconate, stewardship programs, Christian education, and many other areas. And, you will find the Noah’s Ark classmates throughout the community--leading, volunteering, and serving. Class discussions are lively and based on a quest to understand the teachings of Jesus and the Bible and how that fits into our daily lives. We meet upstairs above the Chapel in C-206 at 9:45 for coffee and conversation. Discussion begins at 10:00. Our teachers, Chris Jones, Chris Moore and Rob Singleton, always provide an interesting angle for you to consider. Start the week off positively in your faith journey. Join us!
