Go Mobile or Fall Behind Source: fivesparrows.com
As you already know by now, your customers are using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn in record numbers. So if you aren’t up and running with a well-managed social marketing program by now, you may want to hurry up, because the “next big thing” – Mobile – is already here and being adopted at a staggering rate.
In fact. “half of all Americans [are] predicted to have a smartphone by the end of the
year,” according to Google AdWords Account Manager, Martina Agarpakis.
What are customers using their mobile devices for? The web, of course! They are surfing websites, posting to social networks, following Twitter, watching what their friends “Like”, purchasing daily deal coupons, texting, and sharing information with other users all over the web – right from their mobile phones, iPads, and tablet devices.
So ask yourself, how is your mobile web experience for your customers? If you don’t provide a mobile option for cus-tomers, you may already be driving away customers who could otherwise be requesting
more info, making purchases, or engaging with you via mobile technology.
A Mobile Presence is Becoming Essential When is the last time you saw someone without a mobile phone? Most people today carry a mobile phone with them wherever they go, even using it when they are at home. Mobile is a direct connection to your customers, and a highly person-al medium that can help build and maintain strong relation-ships with customers.

Dear Chamber Member,
Thank you to all who supported, volunteered or participated in the 20th Annual
Hillsdale County Car Show & Summerfest. The show was a great success and
we couldn’t have asked for any better weather. Over 350 classic cars, trucks,
motorcycles & antique tractors participated in this year’s event. On Sunday,
June 26th the classic car raffle was held for the 1972 Plymouth Duster and Mike
Albright of Coldwater Michigan was the lucky winner. Tickets for the Duster were sold in 48 States
and several places throughout Canada.
The Chamber Board of Directors and staff are in the process of looking for a new location for the
Chamber Office as the City of Hillsdale has ended our tenancy agreement at the Mitchell Building.
We are exploring our options at this time and plan to be in our new location by August 1. If you
have any building suggestions or ideas, please let us know.
Please mark your calendars for August 5th and plan to join us for a hole lot of fun at the Annual
Hillsdale County Chamber of Commerce & Hillsdale County Sheriff Department golf scramble at
White Oaks Golf Club. We are looking for 4 person teams and individual golfers as well as hole
sponsors and door prizes. If you are interested in participating or donating to this event please
contact the Chamber at (517) 437-6401.
Over the last several months, I have been working on a committee to bring a Retail Academy to
Hillsdale County. I am pleased to report this will be taking place in August. This eight session
academy will be packed full of information covering human resources, legal, marketing, pricing, store
layout, defining success and much more.
On behalf of the Hillsdale County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Staff we would
like to wish you, your employees and your families a safe and happy 4th of July.
As always, if there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
Karri Doty, IOM, CBSP

Go Mobile or Fall Behind Continued from front cover Research predicts that by 2013, mobile devices will be the “first-screen” that consumers will use to access the web, so make sure your business is ready for this shift in how customers will find, interact, and do busi-ness with you.
How to Get Started with Mobile There are three important points to keep in mind when planning a mobile strategy for your business:
1. From social to mobile to email, 78% of consumers today use multiple channels and devices to browse, research, and make purchases online. Make sure that your main business web-site, e-newsletters, e-campaigns, etc. can all be accessed via mobile devices, as well as from a PC.
2. Integrate your mobile “assets” (like a mobile-enabled website) into your other marketing materials. For instance, use QR codes on printed brochures to lead customers to your mobile site or to a cool video showcasing your business.
3. Use mobile technology to improve or enhance the user’s experience with your business. If you offer coupons, would your customers appreciate receiving them on their smartphones? How about
mobile appointment scheduling? Mobile technologies have opened up an entirely new set of tools and conveniences for customers on the go, so be creative with your thinking.
Consumers today expect instant, anywhere, anytime
communication, and they expect businesses to keep up. Providing a mobile web experience gives customers a direct connection to your business, and demonstrates your commitment to meeting their needs and making it easy to do business with you – regardless of the channel, device, or technology they use. S E N A T O R’ S S P T L I G H T By Senator Bruce Caswell June 16, 2011
Since the passage of the business tax reform in May, I have fielded many inquiries from citizens on whether the changes will generate new jobs and help the economy. I recently had a conversation with Jeff Wilcox, Director of Operations for Drews Place Assisted Living Communities, about the effect the new business tax would have on his business. Mr. Wilcox indicated that with the elimination of the Michigan Business Tax and moving to a more eq-uitable corporate income tax, his compa-ny looks to expand in Tecumseh in the next several months after delaying the project for two years.
He said, “We are much more comfortable with moving ahead on our Tecumseh project under the new
business tax climate in Michigan. We hope to break ground in late summer on our new facility, which will ultimately create 35-45 new jobs.”
The business tax reform package enact-ed in May eliminates the Michigan Business Tax and implements a new corporate business tax that has a signifi-cantly reduced tax burden on small busi-nesses, the main driver of economic growth in Michigan.
I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit of Drews Place and other local businesses that are willing to invest in our communities even in light of the diffi-cult economic times we face as a state. Nearly 80% of Michigan jobs stem from small businesses and these tax changes will help spur Michigan’s recovery by helping small businesses to succeed. As I have said many times, if we invest
in our own people, they will keep jobs here and continue to grow their business in our communities.
If you have questions in the income tax pertaining to the tax on pension income and the changes to the homestead income tax credit, you can access two informative charts on my website: http://www.SenatorBruceCaswell.com. Two big icons linking to these charts appear at the bottom of the main page of my website. You can also click on an adja-cent link to sign up for my periodic email newsletter, if you have not al-ready.
As always, my office is open to anyone seeking assistance. My toll-free phone number to my Lansing office is 1-866-305-0316 and the fax is (517) 373-5944.

As summer is now in full swing, we can all look forward to the many activities that our communities will have available to us this year. I am pleased to look back over the last few months and see that the legislature has been diligent to pro-duce a structurally bal-anced budget for this state without one time gimmicks or reliance upon stimulus dollars.
This balanced budget is based on legitimate dollars and known revenue, not
speculation. We are seeing some positive movement beginning to slowly take place pointing to a time of recovery from our severe recession.
Much ground has been gained already with the elimination of the Michi-gan Business Tax, which will be a great encourage-ment to expansion of busi-ness and making Michigan a welcome place for new business.
Many reforms in regulation are even now being addressed to further aid our state in recovery. I look
forward to being out and about among the many people this summer and welcoming friends, family and visitors to enjoy all that the Hillsdale Coun-ty area has to offer.
As always feel free to contact me through my office at 517-373-1794 or via email - [email protected]

This Time Last Year Source: fivesparrows.com The months go fast, the years even faster... so what were we talking about a year ago? The need for a social strategy - and that need has certainly not gone away during the past 12 months! If you haven't yet implemented a social strategy for your busi-ness, you are already behind the curve. From our June 2010 issue, here is a refresher on why a solid social media strategy is so important.
No More Excuses - You Need A Social Strategy!
If you’re like most small businesses, you already know you should have a presence on social sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
You probably have lots of excuses, too, for why you just haven’t gotten around to setting up a social strategy; maybe you
think it’s too much work, or maybe you think it’s just a fad, or maybe you think that social networking doesn’t really make a difference to your bottom line.
Well, if you’ve been waiting to see some evidence that social networking can work for your business, I’ve got good news for you (and bad news for your excuses). According to recent research reports (from Chad-wick Martin Bailey and iModer-ate Research), social marketing is not only good for promoting and marketing your business, but it can also directly impact sales, attract new customers, and strengthen customer loyalty.
What the Research Says
In the study, 67% of consumers who follow businesses on Twitter said they are more likely to purchase from those businesses after becoming a “follower”. Similarly, 51% of people who “Like” a business on Facebook said they would become customers of the businesses they “Like”. Considering the hundreds of millions of users that these social platforms have, that’s a lot of potential custom-ers and new sales!
Since social networking is all about sharing information, it’s no surprise that the research also found 79% of Twitter followers and 60% of Facebook fans are
more likely to recommend the businesses they follow to their own networks of friends and associates.
That can result in significant referrals being spread through the social networks, with the potential for further sharing and referrals as information is then shared among additional personal networks.
The Message You're Send-ing to Customers
So how important is it for a small business to invest in a social networking strategy? Josh Mendelsohn, a vice president at Chadwick Martin Bailey, says “companies not actively engag-ing [in social networking] are missing a huge opportunity and are saying something to con-sumers, intentionally or uninten-tionally,” which further under-scores the importance of creat-ing an effective social marketing strategy for your business.
If your small business isn’t already using social networking to connect with customers, the sooner you get a strategy in place, the better. Your customers want you to be there, and frankly, they expect it.
Continued on page 11 Page 10
This Time Last Year Continued from page 10 The reasons customers follow or “like” your business are varied; for instance, the study revealed that for women, receiving dis-counts and promotions was a top motivator (60% for Twitter users and 43% for Facebook).
Men, on the other hand became followers on Twitter to be part of a like-minded community (32%), but “liked” businesses on Facebook to show others that
they liked and/or supported the business (52%). Additional reasons cited in the study included
gaining access to exclusive |content, being the first to know new information about a business,
or resolving customer service issues. Whatever the reasons, it’s clear that having a presence on the social networks is becoming an expectation of your customers.
What’s Holding You Back?
Social networking provides your business with a huge opportunity to reach new customers and promote your business, and the data now shows that companies with a social marketing strategy are seeing increases is actual sales and new customers as a result of their social activity. So if your business still does not have a solid social marketing strategy in place, what’s holding you back?

8 Uncommon Employee Benefits Your Staff Will Love By: Darrell Zahorsky, Source: About.com Guide
Lack the employee benefit budget of a Fortune 500 company? There are employee benefit solutions to make your staff happy without breaking the bank.
Designing & administering an employee benefit plan is a complex undertaking. Your plan can cover regular benefits such as health care, vacation time, sick pay, and pension plans. How common are these benefits?
Common Employee Benefits
According to the NFIB 2003 Small Business Poll on
Compensating Employees, the most common employee benefits offered by small businesses are:
 Paid Vacations; Offered by
75% of small businesses.*
 Employee Health Insurance Plan;61%
 Paid Sick Leave;59%
 Disability Insurance;41%
 Education Reimbursement for Job;39%
 Pension Plan;30%
 Life Insurance;29%
 Dental Insurance;24% *
* provided to full-time staff with at least 1 year of service.
Offering employee benefits provides many paybacks to your small business. Number one is staff retention. An attractive employee benefit package will help recruit good employees and retain them as well. In addition, staff reten-tion helps reduced turnover.
8 Uncommon Employee Benefits
Employee benefits will have different levels of value depending on staff age, sex, and other factors. Talk to your staff to determine which benefits are most rewarding.
1. Direct Deposit: Provide your staff with the option of having their checks directly deposited into their bank account at any bank or credit union that is a member of the Automated Clearing House (ACH). Direct deposit will save time and clear the funds faster.
2. Wellness Program: With the rising costs of health care, both employers and employees can take responsibility for the health system by participating in a wellness plan. Any form of fitness programs, smoking cessation, and stress reduction can improve employee absenteeism and overall productivity.
Chamber Testimonials A business owner called to find out if you had to charge sales tax on gift certificates. Karri responded sales tax should not be collected on gift certificate purchases. The business owner thanked Karri for the information and stated she calls the Chamber whenever she has questions about her business and finds the Chamber very helpful.
Page 13
8 Uncommon Employee Benefits Your Staff Will Love Continued from page 13
3. Company Discounts: An overlooked employee benefit to staff is the chance to buy company products or services at discount. Even if it's only one major item or an employee purchase day, your staff will appreciate this benefit.
4. Parking Privileges: Depending on employee commuting needs, parking privileges can cover payment of a monthly city transit pass or paying an amount of pre-tax payroll dollars for vehicle parking.
5. Business Cards & Title: Business cards with an employees name and title will offer an emotional appeal to
staff. It may seem trivial, but your staff will enjoy the level of professionalism and pride that comes from having a business card.
6. Computer Loan Interest Free:
Many employees will value the ability to buy a computer interest-free. Determine a limit of the dollar value of the computer on the plan. Set up an automatic payroll deduction. Make sure a formal agreement is signed in case the employee leaves the company.
7. Community Hours: Offer your employees a limit of regular pay hours in community service time. If a staff member wants to be
involved in a volunteer event, have the company pick up the tab. You will win the hearts of the staff and community.
8. Education Plan: There is no doubt today's
work force requires lifelong learning to keep pace with the changing demands of employment. Your small company may not be able to pay the tuition costs of an MBA program but some community college course reimbursement is affordable.
In developing your employee benefits
program, compare your benefit package to competitors and solicit staff feedback. The best benefits are the ones desired by the workforce and are competitive in the marketplace.
