WTVP viewers and supporters in Central Illinois have two reasons to celebrate in July. The fi rst, of course, is Independence Day. Join us at 7 PM on July 4 for A Capitol Fourth, a 40-year PBS tradition featuring patriotic music, history, fi reworks and more!
The second is on July 1, when 24-hour schedules for Create TV and World will begin airing on 47.4 and 47.3, respectively. You may not see fi reworks on July 1, but you can start watching more home improvement, gardening, cooking and travel programming, plus documentaries, history and in-depth reporting, now on separate broadcast channels.
It’s another signifi cant milestone in the station’s ongoing quest to be the Central Illinois destination for quality programming that engages, educates and inspires.
The main WTVP HD (47.1) and PBS Kids (47.2) channels are not affected by this move.
You may already be familiar with either or both of these content providers. We have been airing abbreviated daily schedules on channel 47.3 for a number of years.
WHAT’S ON WTVP CREATE TV?Create TV features viewer-favorite public television “do-it-yourself” and lifestyle shows and specials on food, travel, arts and crafts, home and garden and other interests. Representative content includes: This Old House, American Woodshop, Growing a Greener World, Best of Joy of Painting, Sewing with Nancy and Rick Steves’ Europe.
WHAT’S ON WTVP WORLD?World shares the best of public media news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming to help viewers understand other people and places. There is news from PBS NewsHour, BBC World News and DW The Day, along with documentaries on POV, NOVA, Frontline and original content from WTVP. Educational content for grades 6 through 12 is also offered daily.
YOU ASKED, WTVP DELIVEREDYou’ve been asking for the full line-up of Create TV and World programs. Recent technology upgrades — funded by a generous gift from Sid and Flo Banwart — allow us to add two new channels, making the Create TV/World move possible.

Occasionally WTVP will feature our members, both new and long-time supporters of public television. If you or someone you know would like to be featured in Meet Our Members just let us know!
In July we meet the Frank family. Billy and Janay recently joined WTVP Klystron Society and decided to use the power of public broadcasting to infl uence their world. The Frank’s decision to join WTVP was simple. According to Billy, “Throughout this unprecedented time, WTVP continues to serve as a safe source for programs that inform, educate and strengthen communities. We see WTVP as part of the solution…contributing to the betterment of our community.” WTVP Klystron Society consists of community leaders whose support of public television creates a ripple effect Throughout Central Illinois, positively impacting culture, business and education. Klystron Members know that active investment in WTVP enriches the community in engaging and relevant ways through the use of public media and outreach. Both Billy and Janay are excited to join the Klystron Society and hope that its mission inspires others to support WTVP as well. If you are interested in becoming a member of WTVP Klystron Society please contact Marcia Bolden, 309-495-0525 or [email protected] for more information.

Momentous events in the fi rst half of 2020 may produce lasting changes in the way we live, work and interact. COVID-19 continues to fog the future. More recently, the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is focusing our attention on racial issues that our nation may at last address in a meaningful way.
Through it all, WTVP has been your timely connection to the news and information you need to understand what is happening around you. From local public affairs programming to in-depth national reporting, analysis and documentaries, WTVP helps you put it all in context.
This high level of coverage is only possible through the generous support of our underwriters. Without them, WTVP news coverage and programming would look much different. Everything from the types of PBS shows to our ability to air local programs would change. As viewers and members of WTVP we owe a great deal to our underwriters and should do everything we can to thank them with our patronage. If you are a business owner and you see the value of a news source like WTVP, we would be happy to talk about adding your company to our underwriters list.
Also of interest to regional business leaders: WTVP will soon announce studio technology upgrades that will place our facilities among the best in the state for all types of video production. In our highly visual media landscape, a professionally produced video can strengthen your brand, help your organization stand out and communicate with impact. WTVP’s experienced staff can deliver what your marketing and communication plan needs.
I’m always available to talk about WTVP programming choices and community support opportunities. To learn about underwriting, talk to Angie Spears, our Corporate Support Manager, at [email protected]. Contact Station Manager/Executive Producer, William Baker, with questions about coming technology enhancements at [email protected].

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER
Sometimes an old idea is still a good idea. During television’s early history, many people recognized the medium’s potential beyond delivering entertainment. One of those was Dr. Phil Weinberg of Bradley University, who envisioned broadcast television as a school curriculum resource that could be accessed by the public. He started and oversaw the operation of a low-power station providing instructional content.
When PBS came into existence, Dr. Weinberg was the driving force who ensured Peoria had its own station, dedicated to the community, to bring shows such as Sesame Street to Central Illinois. He knew that television had the ability to inspire and teach — an idea that has resurged due to two events.
First, thanks to generous gifts, WTVP is able to upgrade our facility, allowing the station to add two channels to its broadcast offerings. The other event is COVID-19. To assist surrounding school districts in reaching their students, WTVP is dedicating one channel to remote learning. Funding for WTVP REMOTE will come from educational entities, and the channel will be accessible to all, no cable or internet required.
WTVP was born from a good idea that has grown into a multi-channel station producing its own programming and documentaries, and now partially returning to its roots. Thank you, Dr. Weinberg.

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
ANDREW A. RANDChairman, IVPTC Board of Directors
The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the ensuing unrest are once again shining a light on racial injustice and inequality in America. It’s not a new debate. Tragically, it has become all too familiar in recent years as our nation struggles with its past and cries out for a better future.
As protestors took to the streets in Central Illinois and across the country, WTVP and PBSplayed a critical role in telling stories and amplifying the voices of people from all walks of life. Special news programs, documentaries, performances, children’s programming and learning resources sought to deepen our understanding of racial issues, foster new conversations and bring about meaningful change. Our constant goal is to bring you diverse, thought-provoking programming that looks at all sides of the issues as it educates, enlightens and informs.
Throughout this national crisis, WTVP has delivered a level of news and thoughtful analysis that you just won’t fi nd anywhere else. Instead of telling you what to think, WTVP equips you to form your own opinions and do the right thing. It is now your responsibility to use what you have learned to create the kind of community you want to live in.
There are so many things in the world that attempt to push us apart. I’m proud to see WTVP still has the power to bring us together.

AMERICA REFRAMED: PERFECTLY NORMAL FOR METUESDAY, JULY 28 7 PM
Alexandria, Jake, Caitlin and Veronica, ages 5 to 15, reveal what it’s like to live with physical disabilities. Their parents search out nurturing opportunities where they are accepted and feel valued, from clinical services and adaptive skiing to a unique after-school dance program in Queens, New York. The students prepare for an exciting spring dance recital made possible by the dedicated involvement of parents, teenage volunteer helpers, choreographers and physical therapists who believe in them and support their dreams.

WTVP treasures the Owl Man portrait by Ken Hoffman hanging in our offi ce. Back in June, the mascot was snatched from our building for the fi rst time in many years. Don’t worry art lovers, he wasn’t owl-napped! A new Ken Hoffman exhibit is opening soon at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, so we lent out our feathered friend so everyone can enjoy the artwork. Check out the painting soon in the museum’s exhibit.
OWL-NAPPING
On May 21, WTVP, in conjunction with local and regional educational entities, announced plans for a new broadcast television channel devoted solely to remote learning. The new channel, to be branded as WTVP REMOTE, is projected to be on air later this summer in time for the 2020 – 2021 school year.
Leaders in Central Illinois have visited the WTVP studios to share their thoughts about how to cope with COVID-19 in all phases of this pandemic. Take a moment to watch these important videos giving you great tips for living in a coronavirus world at wtvp.org.
