Bike for Boys and Girls Club, submitted by Karen Spencer Get Involved. Have Fun. Help Our Students.
Bike for Boys and Girls Club is a fun, high energy event, that raises
funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. This year, the
event will be Sat., July 19, beginning at Edgewood High
School. Everyone can be involved. This event welcomes bike riders
of all abilities. Choose a ride of 8, 25, or 50 miles. If you aren’t
fond of riding, volunteers are also needed. Greet riders at rest
stops with water, or help serve lunch to riders at the finish and
celebrate their ride. Or, if you already have plans for this day,
donate to a rider or team. The BGC provides services to many
students in the Verona Area School District. The College Club
program at VAHS is helping 80 students succeed in their studies
and reach their goal of attending college. This is a fantastic way to
spend a summer morning and help our students, in whatever
manner you choose: biking, volunteering or donating money. Visit
the Bike for Boys and Girls Club website at: http://

ADVANCED DESKTOP PUBLISHING STUDENTS WORK WITH
DRIFTMIER DESIGN LLC, by Tammy Makovec, BE Instructor
Students in the Advanced Desktop Publishing course at VAHS were provided a unique
opportunity to work with Cathy Driftmier, owner of Driftmier Design LLC. Cathy will be
moving to a new space soon, and as a part of that move she thought it would be a good
time for a new professional image. She contacted Tammy Makovec, Business Education Instructor
at the high school and together a project idea was formed.
Students began the process by walking to Driftmier Design LLC, meeting Cathy, learning about her
business and her desire for a new image as she moves to a new location. Back at the high school,
the students brainstormed logo and tagline ideas, developed new color palettes and set to work on
the computer. Using the Adobe Creative Suite, students developed new logos, business cards and
letterhead. The best part of the project was inviting Cathy in to the classroom to hear the students
present their ideas to Cathy.
This was an excellent project for the students as they learned to meet the needs of the client,
develop design work for a client, meet strict deadlines, and present their ideas professionally.

Students Visit Local Financial Institutions, submitted by Tammy Makovec, BE Instructor
On Wednesday, May 7th, students in Your Money 101 at VAHS were welcomed in to some
of Verona’s local financial institutions. As part of a unit on banking and banking services,
20 students walked to Culver’s for lunch, and then proceeded to hear about some of the
banking tools they will need to know about soon. The students are juniors and seniors in an
important course about personal
financial literacy.
On their trip, they learned about
the differences between credit
unions and commercial banks.
They learned about credit and the
variety of services that financial
institutions offer. They were able
to get a behind-the-scenes tour
and see the vault. Heartland

The 80th annual Wisconsin Association of School Councils state student council
conference was held downtown on April 27th through 28th. Fifteen student
council members and Ms. Domres attended the conference to participate in
competitions, meetings, and break-out sessions and see guest speakers. The
rally before the competitions even made the front page of the Wisconsin State
Journal, as this was the largest group of people to be in the capitol building
since the protests three years ago.
The competitions were held on Sunday the 27th in the capitol building. We received gold for a timeline made
by Abbie Homan and Sigal Felber, a poster presentation about the Children’s Carnival by Katie Fan and Brook
Felsheim, and for our “Stud. Co.” T-shirt design. We
received silver for the scrapbook made by Elizabeth
Thompson, the banner made by Maddie Vogel, Anna
Kopp, and Mackenzie Hall, and for overall spirit and
participation in the competitions. Katie Fan also
received gold for her work in the writing
competition where she was given a topic and an
hour to write on it and Kristi Larsen received silver
for the speech on technology that she wrote with
Jake Leskovar.
Later on at the conference we were able to attend sectionals hosted by other schools and community
members. We picked up some great ideas that we hope to use in upcoming years and even hosted our own
sectional with Maddie Weston, Clariel Kramer, and Katie Goetz
presenting about the Children’s Carnival. During the regional
board meeting, Clariel Kramer was elected Vice President of
the Region 5 regional officer board by members of student
councils around the Madison area.
If you are interested in joining Student Council next year and
were unable to attend our new student meeting on May 20th,
please see Ms. Domres in G129 or email her at
[email protected]. Meetings are held Tuesday
mornings at 7:30. There will be a summer meeting to begin
Homecoming planning, so be sure to check Edmodo if you have
joined Student Council for next year!

Schedule Changes 2014-2015 School Year Student Services staff are currently working on creating student schedules for next year. Schedules come out during the summer months. If a student would like to make a change to their schedule that adheres to our schedule change policy, counselors will be available in August to help with schedule changes.
Schedule change policy: All schedule adjustments must be made with the student’s grade-level counselor and may require administrative approval. Space in courses is limited, and schedule adjustments may only be considered if space is available. Adjustments are not typically allowed after the first three days of the semester and usually only for purposes of remediation or to meet graduation and admission requirements. Students who request a schedule change after three days of the semester have passed will be dropped with an “F” (Fail) or a “W” (Withdrawal) depending on the circumstances and reasons for the schedule change. Changes will ONLY BE made for the following reasons: Failure of the student to meet proper course requests A different course is needed as a result of failure or deficiency towards graduation requirements Class conflicts (two classes scheduled during the same period) Recommendation of a post-secondary institution and mandatory for admission Requests a study hall and does not have one within their schedule • Completed a course during summer
school Teacher recommendation that confirms the original placement was not appropriate Extenuating circumstances that do not fall into a category noted above and must be submitted in writing to
your grade level counselor. All appeals must be signed by a parent / guardian before they will be considered. Your counselor will review and determine if the appeal will be brought before an administrator for final consideration. Appeals only be presented by a counselors.
Schedule adjustments will NOT be considered for the following reasons: Student wishes to change to improve grade point average Student states that the class isn't what one thought it would be or one doesn't like the class Student states that the class is getting too hard • Student states that they have changed their mind Student has concerns with the teacher assignment • Student is unhappy with the lunch period assignment Student has concerns relating to members of a given class Student desires to have the same teacher all year or class as the same period all year Student desires to have a release period/study hall class or responsibility pass during a specific period

The AP Language and Composition
SUMMER ASSIGNMENT!!
This summer, students enrolled in Advanced Placement Language and Composition will need to read excerpts from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and his essay “Civil Disobedience” as well as answer questions that will ask them to analyze and interpret these readings. Please read the following information carefully as there are several changes from what has been done in the past… Previously, students have been able to access the summer assignment through the school website. However, VASD is switching to a new website vendor and students will not have access to the website over the summer. For this year, students will receive the summer assignment via their school emails with a Word Document attached. They will need to type their responses into the document; we will be having them upload their work into Turnitin.com at the beginning of the school year. This assignment is due on the first day of school.
Here are the details: Text: Walden and Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau ISBN-13: 978-1-59308-208-6 ISBN-10: 1-59308-208-8 The Assignment: 1. An email will be sent to student’s school email addresses at the end of May. This email will contain an attachment with the summer assignment in .doc format. 2. Students will need to type their responses into the document and be prepared to upload their work into Turnitin.com on the first day of school.
A word of Caution:
The reading is arduous and will take time. Even advanced readers will struggle. The word
choice is advanced and Thoreau’s ideas are complex. Avoid putting this work off until the
last few days before school!!
