presidents messageHope you all are doing well! Im honored to be able to serve as the 2014-2015 President of UCLA Circle K, an organization
that has grown on me as a second home (besides my real home and I guess my apartment heheh :p) To get to know me alittle bit, today was a GREAT day- it was a pretty cloudy day this morning. How did I know? You know its a cloudy day when
you look outside and you see a lot of clouds. Hurrah for anti-jokes! On a real note, I fell asleep last night while trying to do myhomework and rushed to get it done when I woke up, went to class and almost set something on fire during Chem lab, thento research, and then ended t he day with $1.50 fish tacos from Rubios on Tuesday!
UCLA Circle K helped me to find a family and many friends within the large campus of UCLA, and as the incomingPresident, I hope to make Circle K feel like a second home to YOU. With the variety of community service opportunities every
week, many new leadership positions to increase involvement within the club, and many social events to check out, theresunlimited ways to finding your defining moment in Circle K. As a close friend once said, Circle K is like practicing a sport: youcan do the bare minimum of practice to be good, but the more you practice, thebetter youll do. With Circle K, the more you get involved, the moreIm sure that youll end up loving Circle K.
With the beginning of a new term with the 2014-2015 board,Im excited to see the implementation of innovative ideas andexpanding our horizons in service, leadership, and fellowship.I can only hope that with my full effort, UCLA Circle K will
continue to grow in a positive direction. However, I cantdo it alone. It ll take everyones help, and Im positive thatwith everyones participation and contributions, UCLACircle K will continue to expand and grow as the bestCircle K in the world! Yee.
Last question before I leave! Do you know whatsout of this world? The moon. Just kidding, yourexperience in Circle K will be out of this world.Stay tuned for what we have in store for the rest
of spring quarter! -Benjamin Wu
letter from the editHey Circle K!
I hope all of you are doing well! Spring quarter has certainly flown by!
As the year here at UCLA is coming to an end, I have been reflecting on my first year here in college. I have beendefinitely been challenged academically, stayed up way later than I would have liked on numerous occasions, and more than once, I have already been told that this is simply the beginning of a long path of hard classes, bad
curves, and readings that are physically impossible to finish.
But despite this, I have found myself enjoying college quite a bit. I have had the opportunity to meet so manygreat people--people who are passionate about what they do, people who are excited about the future, andpeople who amaze me with their intellectual vitality and their love for life. Circle K is filled with these types of
people, and I have been so blessed to stumble upon such an amazing group of people.
This last quarter has definitely been a quarter full of new beginnings. I have been introduced to the new responsi-bilities that come with being on board, started up committee meetings, and begun work on creative projects for
the upcoming year. I am definitely excited for whats to come in the next few quarters, and I look foward to taking
part in that journey with all of you!-- Melody

ROCK N ROLL GOLF TOURNAMENTOn April 5th, 2014, a few of our Circle K club members
(Benson, Emily D., and I) attended the Rock and Roll GolfTournament hosted by the Pablove Foundation at Angeles
National Golf Course! This is a great non-profit organization that
focuses on raising awareness as well as raising money to defeat
childhood cancer.
The beginning of the event was filled with tasks inpreparation prior to the arrival of the tournament players,
totaling in 32 teams of 4. These tournament players consisted
of representatives from, but not limited to, Shazam, Google, andTesla! Many of the representatives at the golf tournament came
either from out of state or out of the city just to participate inthe charity tournament to give back to the community and to
combat childhood cancer. As the guests arrive and check in at
the beginning of the day, volunteers were then moved around
the golf course to facilitate some of the contests at certain
holes on the course. I was personally placed at the Hole-In-One Contest at Hole 7, Par 3. At this hole, participants had the
opportunity to play in this contest to win $25,000!!! Thats right,
you read it right! Twenty-five grand in cash! Unfortunately, I
was not able to witness anyone win $25,000, but talking to and
watching the participants try was fun in itself. All in all, this was a very fun event to work at. I met a few
great people at the Pablove Foundation and found
out all about their efforts to provide
funding to families who are in need
of treatments for their children. Mypersonal favorite event was my
encounter with my favorite Jonas
Brother, Nick Jonas!
The Pablove Founation is anamazing organization, as it was
founded by two parents who
lost their son to childhood cancer.
Volunteering with the organization and
understanding where the money fromthis charity event goes towards makes
me as a volunteer feel as though Iam making a huge difference in
the children with cancer just by
putting forth my time to serveat this event.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYOn Monday, April 21, 2014, UCLA Circle K members, in
conjunction with other on campus student organizations, meton the Wilson Plaza lawn from 10 AM to 2 PM for this noble
cause. There, lay many cardboard boxes signifying the immenselack of shelter and resources available to homeless individuals.
The volunteers constructed makeshift houses out of these
cardboard boxes, which caught the eyes of many UCLA students
walking to and from classes. Anyone who happened to stop by
and inquire received more information about the homelessness-awareness initiative.
In attendance from our organization were Benson Ho,
Estrella Lozano, Liezel Manalo, Thien Nghiem, and Jessica Pham.
In addition to the spirit of giving back, Shantytown proved toalso be a very fun and unique bonding experience for these
charitable workers. We made a really cool, three-story tower
with ladders and trapdoors, and real doors entirely out of
cardboard and packaging tape, reported Pham. One volunteer
even decided to create his own personal cardboard body armorwhilst walking around Wilson Plaza to educate pass er-bys.
Others at the event felt frustration, struggling with frequent
attempts to even make a house that could stand. These minuscule,
hands-on struggles were most powerful in illustrating the need
to reach out to the homeless community, who regrettably mustconstruct these very real cardboard homes to survive. It was an
eye-opening experience that successfully spread awareness and
motivated many to hopefully extend a helping hand the next
time they encounter a homeless individual.

serviceBROUGHT TO YOU BY THE JUKE SQUAD
The JuKe Squad kicked off the start of spring quarter with CKI Service
Week, which included a variety of service events ranging from sortingused baby clothes for low income families, baking and selling goods
for The Eliminate Project, and working together with the Santa Monica
Kiwanis to prepare food for a basketball tournament at the Boys & Girls
Club! We also had service events such as Reading to Kids that related to
our District Service Initiative for 2014-2015, Leaping Toward Literacy.Reoccurring events include Baby2Baby and Wheelchair basketball,
which happen every 2 weeks on Monday and every week on Tuesday,
respectively.
We started off committee meetings for spring quarter during 3rdweek, discussing topics including the spring large-scale service
project, types of service projects that people would like to see, and
subcommittee positions. Ideas that were brought up during meetings
include volunteering at the LA Food Bank, going to marathons/run,
and working with animals, all of which were jam-packed into the May3rd & 4th weekend! We have also had a ton of service projects with the
Kiwanis Family so far, including Kiwanis One Day, A rbor Day, and Care
Package Making with USC :)

BRUIN DAY VOLUNTEERINGGuess how many students and parents came to
UCLA last Saturday? 1000? 2000? How about 12186? No
wonder it was so packed and loud that day.If you still dont know why there were so many
parents last Saturday, then you should know that it was
Bruin Day! It is that time of the year where prospective
students would come to UCLA and experience the
college life for the weekend while learning moreabout UCLA, such as organizations on campus and
housing. Furthermore, we wanted admitted freshmen
to experience the energy and pride of being a UCLA
bruin firsthand and acquire the essential information if
they decide to enroll at UCLA. There were a vast amountof tours, fairs and presentations, such as sustainability,
campus tours and recreation.
There were several different volunteer jobs for Bruin
Day and I was placed at the hospitality tents, where
we helped pass out pamphlets and bags, help gavedirections to the wandering parents, and answered any
questions people might have about anything related
to UCLA. It was awesome representing UCLA to the
prospective students and giving back to the campus
that we love. Since I was positioned in Bruin Plaza, I gotto listen to the chimes of the Victory Bell whenever a
student submitted their SIR. Every ring gave tremendous
Bruin pride not only to me, but also to every volunteer
around the area. Surprisingly, Emily Nhan and I even got
to meet our beloved chancellor, Mr. Gene Block, andtake a picture with him.
If you didnt volunteer for Bruin Day this year, I would
highly recommend you to do so next year! Its awesomespending several hours doing service on the campus
and a great way to learn more about our campus andmeet people volunteering with you. Last but not
least, you can also get a free meal if you volunteer for
more than five hours. Who doesnt want a free meal?

STONE CREEK RESTORATIONOn April 19, 2014, we (Lisa Chong, Thien Tran,
and I) took a trip to Stone Canyon Creek right behind
UCLAs very own Anderson School of Management.
Our tasks included passing potted plants along a line
of volunteers, pitchforking dirt to uproot ivy vines, and placing the pots down onto the site of their future
homes. For the first task, everyone formed a line across
the creek and sent the pots down the line, one by one
to the other end. The second was a bit more strenuous;
using pitchforks, we lifted dirt that the ivy roots clungto, and pulled them out with all our might. Afterwards,
we picked up two or three potted plants at a time,
followed the man in charge around the creek, andplaced them exactly where he wanteda little higher,
a little lower, a little to the right, perfect. Due to BruinDay, we had to leave a little earlier than everyone else
and unfortunately did not get to plant, which was what I
was looking forward to most. Nonetheless, I had a great
time!
The project was initiated in an effort to restorethe creek that was once lush and verdant with water
actually flowing through it. The creek, which is now
dried up and more barren, was spruced up by the efforts
of volunteers as we all worked together. Its restorationwill not only provide UCLA students with a piece of wild
nature on campus, but also a home for birds, squirrels,
insects, and greenery.
This was actually my first service project with Circle
K, and although there were not very many of us, I stillenjoyed volunteering there. I have not done very
many service projects before even though Ive always
wanted to, so I was particularly excited about this one.
The experience was fresh, the work was gratifying, and
the time was well spent. It showed me that a few hoursout of a Saturday afternoon can make a big difference
in a place that needs it, and even more so alongside
others working toward a common goal. Caring for the
environment does not necessarily mean hopping on a
bus to a faraway national park to pick up trash or protectthe endangered species. It is evident that even local
areas need just as much service from volunteers as anylarge-scale sites. It was a grand time and I encourage
you to join us next time! Articleby: Sandy Thai(GeneralMember)

Spring quarter so far has been super awesome for the fundraising
committee! We started the quarter off with a bake sale and a More Time
with Family TV Taping. We then had the coolest fundraiser (hehe we
punny) for an entire week at Chilly Ribbons. Restaurant fundraisers arealways cool so we had a Veggie Grill Social/Fundraiser! We also got thechance to help out American Cancer Society in their fight against cancer
at Relay for Life where we sold Strawberry Lemonade to
passerby relayers. 5th week was midterms week but
we didnt let that stop us as 10 members headed to
Sullivan and Son TV Taping. Dare week is now on somake sure you get your dares in! Make sure to also

SPIRIT-SHIP
Even in the midst of midterms, Circle K-ers
refused to waste an opportunity to help a worthy
cause - even at the cost of a weekend of relaxation. On the Saturday of Week 5, I packed some snacks, a
pillow, and a blanket, and set off to Drake Stadium
to join fellow members in UCLAs annual Relay for
Life. Relay for Life is a 24-hour event (this year 2PM
2PM, 4/264/27/2014) from in which individualteams pledge to have at least one team member
walking the track at all times in order to fundraise
for the fight against cancer. As I stood outside of
the entrance to Drake Stadium, I wasnt sure what
to expect as this was going to be my first relay. Butas a member of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), I did
know that it was going to be a a great experience;
the day I would spend with our team, the UCLA CKI
Walking Turkeys, would soon prove that!
After overcoming our first hurdle with the settingup of our tent there were a lot of rods and hooks as
well as confusion, but hey we got it eventually! we
all attended the Opening Ceremony and watched
cancer survivors walk the first lap. From thereon,Relay for Life officially began as the WalkingTurkeys, together with the various other teams and
organizations, began their 24-hour walk around
the track. Some members seemed like they never
stopped once they had started; a special round ofapplause to Estrella Lozano, Donald Nguyen, Jay
Gong, and Connie Lam, who completed their goal
of 109 laps!
Most of the teams also held on-site fundraisers
for Relay for Life, and Circle K decided to sell
donation-based strawberry lemonade to the weary,
or otherwise just thirsty, Relayers. We had a slowstart, but fortunately ended up making a decent
amount of profit! Besides walking, checking out
other fundraisers, or manning our own, the Walking
Turkeys partook in the other activities planned by
the Relay committee throughout the day, too. Acouple of us played a game of water balloon toss,
others worked out with a small Zumba session,
and we even all danced at a silent rave at two in
the morning! On a more serious note, however,
towards the end of the night, everyone joinedtogether for the Luminaria ceremony during
which we remembered and honored those who
unfortunately lost their battles against cancer. We
then all walked a silent lap in their memory, as well
as in the hope for a cancer-free future. After I passed out for a few hours in the tent
along with some other members, we all continued
Relaying and fundraising the next morning. I know
everyone was exhausted at that point, so its allthe greater that everyone had the dedication tokeep going even then! Unfortunately I had to leave
an hour before the event ended, so I didnt get to
watch the closing Fight Back Ceremony. Still, all in
all it was an absolutely amazing experience, bothfor service and for bonding with fellow Circle K-ers,
and I really cant wait to do it again next year!

RELAY FOR LIFE
The past month has been a tough transition from going ageneral member/family head to a board member. Being amember presents its own challenges and there is a lot moresponsibilities and deadlines to take care. It is no longer jextra curricular, but a commitment. The adjustment to t he
workload came gradually, but the past month has provenrather successful! After taking up a board position, we nowpreciate free time so much more. Our Circle K board has a bond of its own and the Spiritship committee is proud to bof such great company. It is only the beginning and we tru
forward to the miles ahead.

K-TOWN NIGHT MARKETOn a beautiful Friday evening, members visited the first ever Korea Town
(K-Town) Night Market! I was with the Debonair Dreamlanders (Meta Minions
and the Warpstar Warriors) for a house outing to the K-Town Night MarketEntranced by the claims of delicious Korean BBQ and street food, as well as
great music, a variety of vendors, and FREE admission, we stuck through more
than an hour long bus ride. It was barely passed sunset, but there were already
huge crowds of people entering the venue.
As we walked through the gates, the first thing that struck me was the sheeramount of delicious food to tr y. There were food trucks, such as Seoul Sausage
and Fluff Ice, selling everything from fusion hot dogs to shaved snow. Innovative
foods such as Ramen Burgers and Takoyaki were drawing the attention of many.
People were walking around with Hotato Potato sticks, a spiral-shaped cross
between french fries and potato chips, and boba drinks, taking in the sight andthe experience.
After dinner, we headed back to the night market, where we played carnival
games and decided to get dessert. Branton Tu, Effie, William Shiraga, Brandon
Chao, and I chose to get shaved snow from Fluff Ice. Their flavors ranged fromChocolate Crunch, Fusion Green Tea, and Mango Madness to Thai Tea, and
Pretty in Blue (featuring BLUE boba!). I ordered Mango Madness and shared
with my friends. At that point, it was getting pretty late so we had to start
walking back to the bus.
While walking back, my friends and I shared shaved snow, laughing and joking around under the cover of a starlit sky and
glowing street lights. I arrived at my dorm completely exhausted
and worn out from the bus ride and the constant walking; but just
for the fresh and exciting experience alone, I would do it again in a
heartbeat.

After arriving at Dockweiler State Beach
in the early afternoon Saturday, May 3rd, Idrop my backpack onto the sizzling sand
and run straight for the icy seawater. The
perfect weather hints at a day full of warmth
and rejuvenation! The member retreat, organized by
the ME&R Chair Samantha Carino and
Fellowship Chair Samantha Chen, is a day
for us members to relax, forget about our
worries and bond together. Senior membersalso have many exciting and informative
activities in store for us throughout the day
and night.
Natalie Yip initiates our first game,
Mr. It. Suddenly, I see members runningaway from Mr. It, but before Mr. It tags us,
we must shout out anothers name then
that person becomes the new Mr. It and
must chase someone. Hoping to remain
unnoticed, I make it to the final roundsbefore Billy Shollenberger stealthily tags me
out. (Boo, Billy!) However, congratulations to
Denise Huynh, Duc Huynh, David Limjocoand Billy for winning!
Afterwards, Michael Yebisu sets up thekaraoke system for a game of Finish the
Lyrics with popular songs from the 70s
to the present. Despite having a 3-0 lead
against the boys, the girls lost the winning
title, 12-6. After jamming to songs suchas Cee Lo Greens Forget You and Celine
Dions My Heart Will Go On,we can agree
that the guys sure know their lyrics! As the day goes on, David, Alexander
Pham and Billy run us through the timeline
of the past year and show us how to
introduce ourselves and others to newmembers. In addition, after completing
the Color Test to find out our strengths and
weaknesses, we divide into groups based
on our color personalities orange, gold,
blue and green and perform a skit todisplay our characteristics. Learning more
about myself and about the club makes
me eager to seek self-improvement and to
recruit new members in the fall quarter!
We break off into four groups in a gameof Billys Animal Tag: monkeys tag other
animals on the lower leg, snakes quickly tap
othershands, sloths tap the shoulders and
birds fly and circle opponents. As a monkey,
I quickly fail and transform countless timesinto a sloth and back into a monkey. At one
point, Yoni Anderson manages to change
me into a bird which is the most difficultanimal to be! In the end, the monkeys
dominate.Despite being different individuals, we
are all connected to each other as if by a
yarn. From David, Alex and Billys session
about networking and professionalism, I
realize that Circle K is a family of connectionsboth inside and outside of the club; we are
all there to help each other succeed.
After roasting hot dogs and smores, singcampfire songs and dry our clothes and
towels over the bonfire, we play a strategic
game of Hot Lava. The four pieces of glow-
in-the-dark splattered paper illuminate thepathway for us at night to trek across the
sand. With teams of about five people, we
must have teamwork and to keep in contact
with each paper as we cross. Finding
easier alternatives, my teammate KevinTran carries Lisa Chong across, while Jong
Choi uses two sheets and ends up doing
the splits. Hot Lava is more difficult than it
sounds!
To close up the member retreat, Deniseleads Cross the Line, in which we step
forward or backward if a statement she
reads applies to us. Standing in a circle, we
all see how much we relate to each other
and are not alone. We should never hesitateto compliment others and embrace them
for who they are. For a day full of bonding,
I believe this is the perfect way to end thenight; as we all become closer as a club,
we are able to open up and discover newaspects about each other. We appreciate the
hard work Team Sam (or as Shane Villacorta
calls it, Sam Squared!) and the seniors put in
to make this a wonderful retreat!

THAI CULTURE NIGHTOne fine Saturday, the 26th of April to be exact, several members of UCLA Circle K went
the way to the lovely Schoenberg Hall on campus to watch one of the many culture nighwhich are held throughout the year! This one was the 16th annual Thai culture night Befo
Summer, presented by Thai Smakom. Our very own members, Sonya Apinyavat and Ali
Giang, were in the production, so of course we were going to show our love by attendin
being the supportive Circle K-ers were known to be!
This culture night was filled with fun, laughs, excitement, and, of course, feels. The dramthis year centered on around a class of Thai senior high school students who had to put o
one last performance before their graduation. Suddenly, a Thai-American boy transfers in
their class, which proceeds to a series of conflicts and revelations between members of th
class, as he tries to adjust to the new environment with help from the class leader. Man
talent acts were interspersed appropriately to the drama: elegant traditional dances durinthe festival scene, Muay Thai martial arts during the fight scene, and Thai country mus
during a club scene. Thai Smakom Modern, featured Sonya and Alice, who were, simply pawesome. They were also fun extras in some of the scenes in the drama! The culture show h
a very harmonious ending and was one I really enjoyed. After the show ended, we waited
the lobby to congratulate Sonya and A lice with posters and hugs! One of the greatest and most put-together scen
for me was the taxi scene. There was only a couc

the last few months, we have been constantly planning ways torease meaningful interactions with our youngest branches of

K-Kids by attending and facilitating their monthly meetings. On tophat, we have brainstormed other events we can host for them. This
ludes a K-Kid version of Key to College that we are looking to hostmetime in Fall Quarter. With Builders Club, the committee has made
parations to charter one of the first clubs in the area. The goal for the
ar is to have UCLA Circle K co-sponsor a Builders Club by the time that
trict Convention hits or at least to prepare a middle school for theirarter. Finally, the committee has been working with Key Club/KIWINS
reaching out to the Lieutenant Governors in the area. We have built
ong relations with many Key Club divisions: Crystal, Diamond,
5W, and 25E. Through this bridge of communication, these

interesting part of the meeting was that they have P.T the Pig. P.T
is similarly used like Flan, but instead all the change that is putin P.T. goes toward the Pediatric Trauma Program, an initiative
set by the Kiwanis Foundation to help families experiencingpediatric trauma. I thought that it was really cute (not that Flan
isnt cute), so when we were passing him around, I donated
some of the change I had on me.
When making the care packages, we made an assembly line
in the room and set things table by table. It wasnt too much ofa hassle since my only duty to fill drinks into each of the bags.
After packing all the snacks, there was an abundance of food so
we spent a bit of socializing and eating. I was able to talk for a bit
with Kiara, their treasurer, as we hit it off really well at my last visit
so it was nice to catch up with her! Another person I was ableto interact with at the meeting was our LTG Brandon. We spoke
about his past experience in the Kiwanis Family and some of his
goals that he has for his term. It was nice to talk to him especially
since I didnt have much of an opportunity to get to know him
when elections were occurring at District Convention; we hadtalked for so long that we lost track of time. Soon enough, it
was time for to walk back to the car and go home. Betty, their
President, took the time to walk u s to the car, which was another
opportunity to get to know her. I hope to see her at one of ourmeetings in the future!
Though it was really awkward walking around on rivalry turf,
overall, it was nice to visit the USC Circle K club once again; Im glad
I was able to go. If you havent yet, I suggest going to more Kiwanis
Family events: its a great way to network and see how the restof the organization works!

CSU LONG BEACH BANQUET
On this past Saturday, May 3rd, five UCLA Circle K membersdrove down south to a park in Long Beach area to attend and
support an end of the year banquet hosted by Cal State LongBeach. The theme was Classy Rachets, just as the title holds
To start off, the banquet overall was fairly well organized. Aside
from a technical difficulty, everything went according to the
schedule. Everyone at the banquet was approachable and
friendly. I not only reunited with one of my best friends in highschool, but met new friends from El Camino College and Ca
State Northridge in our division (Go Metro!).
Of course, we cannot forget one of the most important parts
of banquetthe presidents farewell speech. Yertgyji Xiong,
the past 2013-2014 president of CSU Long Beach, was a verygood speaker. Despite never having met him prior to banquet
or participating in interclub events with Long Beach, the
experiences and the struggles that he endured during his term
were so tangible. I have never realized how much club president
must through to maintain the club from disintegrating. One part of his speech did really move my heart. He stated
We are all rachets. In modernized dictionaries, a rachet is
defined as an individual portraying very ill-mannered and
insolent characteristic. But before the definition of rachets camedefinition of humans. Each and every one of us are uniquely
distinguished individuals. Unique individuals vary from those
who can juggle more than ten juggling balls to those with an
incredibly high pitched voice. What makes rachets different
from anyone? In fact, with what right do we say that certainpopulation is different from other groups? We each have one
life, one soul, and so do people who we define as rachets. We
all essentially are classy rachets, capable of great achievement,
and most importantly, capable of developing passion to humble
ourselves and serve our community.Although the banquet ended a bit late and I had to wake up early
for Spring Training Conference the next day, I have no regrets. I am
looking forward to be more involved with our division! Go Metro!

UCLA Circle K set off to Orange County
for the annual Spring Training Conference
South (STC South) hosted at Orange Coast
College (OCC) on Sunday, May 4th! Upon
arrival, we stepped onto a field filled withCircle K students from San Diego to Las
Vegas - even the current District Treasurer,
Alan Perez from UC Berkeley made an
appearance! To get things rolling, each
lieutenant governor conducted a roll callfor their respective divisions which was
responded with a boisterous divisional
cheer of excited clubbers. Then came
the real fun workshops. The day wasthemed after the movie Frozen with a
tagline modeled after Do You Want to
Build a Snowman? The day was dedicated
towards improving leadership skills in
each and every member, and the roomswere named after different characters
such as the Elsa Room, Olaf Room, etc.!
Being a psychology major, I could
not pass up the chance to make one ofthe first workshops I attend the Rulesof Attraction! This workshop described
reasons why we may fall for the people we
do and different kinds of relationships that
exist. It also included two love tests that
allowed us to see just how compatiblewe really are with our significant other
and what kind of person we would be or
already are in a relationship. The results
stirred some surprise and a lot of laughs
all over the room. Learning about love
and baes was definitely the best way tostart off the day of workshops.
After being re-educated on love, I
thought that it would be the perfect
time to get a quick reminder of what
our club is all about so I made my wayover to the Circle K 101 workshop
hosted by our immediate past 2013-2014
District Governor, Sean D. Nguyen. He
reacquainted us with the Circle K pledgeand guided us through the meaning of
each line of the pledge and how we may
achieve our clubs goal through Circle Ks
three tenants: service, leadership, and
fellowship.I also attended a few board related
workshops like Having a Distinguished
MD&E Programhosted MD&E Panel, led
by 2013-2014 Membership Development& Education Chair Alex Pham, who wasalso UCLA CKIs 2012-2013 President.
Yoni Anderson, Sam Carino, and I gained
some insight on the various requirements
needed for the distinguished MD&E title
as well as what is to be expected of anMD&E and what can be improved on. We
also got acquainted with many of our
districts MD&Es and discussed various
problems, solutions and ideas that each
of encountered. From what I witnessed in
that room, Circle K is going to be in greathands this upcoming year!
Since I had such a great start, I wanted
to end the day just as amazing and there is
no better way to do so than to attend the
workshop The Elements of YOU hostedby our very own immediate past 2013-
2014 President Leonna Luc and 2013-2014
Single Service Project Chair/2014-2015
Administrative Vice President SonyaApinvayat! This motivating workshop
brought CKIers through an inspirational
journey to discover what exactly makes
YOU special and YOUnique through self-
discovery activities such as the personalitycolor test to telling new friends just how
amazing they are from the top of your
lungs.
The day ended with a few words fromour past district governor, a few cheers, alot of photos. It was a great day back on
home at OCC with Magic Kingdom and
Metro! STC South was an amazing and
worthwhile experience and everyone
should take the opportunity to experiencesuch fun workshops at least once!

SPRING TRAINING CONFERENCE
COLLEGE FAIROn this past Tuesday May 6th, three Circle K members and one d
all the way to the opposite side of Los Angeles and participated in a
at Jefferson High School. Our goal was to give the students general i
about UCLA, our campus structures, our environment, and of cou
Circle K! It was interesting because USC Circle K was also present, ahappened to share the same table. It was a little sad because mor
wanted to know more about USC than UCLA, but what can I say? T
itself is closer to USC campus after all.
This college fair reminded me of Key to College all the way back in
hence the title. One of the seniors was apparently accepted into UCteam for the Fall of 2014, and he was asking me if I know anything
program. I felt a little guilty because I honestly knew nothing about o
team, besides the fact that UCLA defeated USC this past season. Ove
many enthusiastic expressions on the studentsfaces really made me
Its just another confirming, yet comforting fact that I am now an adupeople will look up to you whenever they want help; its still quite a s
and do not quite feel it.\We also had a chance to meet and talk with three USC Circle K mem
were all very nice people. Although there wasnt enough time to g
them better, I am definitely looking forward to meet them again in th

So today I was asked what leadership meant to me and to be honest,
that was something I never truly thought about until now. When Ithink about leadership, I first think about the people who I look up to,
on a personal level, and in terms of leadership positions. These people
range in many ways, from my family members, to my mentor and past
Circle K leaders. The qualitys that stood out to me in these leaders were
their compassion, strength, honesty, determination, and thoughtfulness. To anyone, these could just be random qualities that anyone could have
listed, but to me, these qualities truly define a leader. Compassion is what
I personally find the most important. Someone who truly cares about
others, is someone who would put others needs before their own,
something that a leader should be doing. A leader is someone whois strong in the sense that they can face obstacles and keep a calm
and clear headed mind until situations get resolved. An honest and
determined person, would be someone that people would want to
trust on a personal and professional level. Lastly, thoughtfulness in
a leader shows that they are able to analyze situations and issuesand view solutions from all sides, taking into consideration things
that most people would overlook. All of these traits put together in
varying degrees, can make a great leader. However, leaders in mymind are not predetermined people who have to have a certainpersonality, or a specific leadership position. These traits listed
exist in everyone around us. It ju st depends on who can learn
to adapt these traits to fit their own personal leadership style.
Leadership is something that is always being developed
and discovered, in the face of adversity, or in the small actof trying something new. If you had asked me a couple
of years ago if I truly saw myself as a leader, I would have
said not particularly, but if you ask me that today, I would
surprisingly say that I believe I am starting to grow into one,
and that everyone is a leader in their own way!
q: what does leadership mean to you?
