Emmanuel Vincent ’09 Ed.D., was an education policy fellow at Northeastern University when he was awarded a Carnegie Fellowship to study ways to innovate education for the 21st century, in particular for African-American and Latino students coming through the public education system.

Vincent came to JWU to earn a doctorate in educational leadership after completing his master’s in special education. Vincent’s interest lies in charter schools and special education, comparing educational approaches of other nations to build on the best components of all.

“When I got the Fulbright, it was icing on the cake,” says Vincent. “I was very excited. I am from a small place in Liberia, West Africa, and came to America. I’ve been presented with all of this opportunity.”

With Fulbright funding, Vincent traveled to Japan and spent three weeks touring a special education school, a middle school and a high school to observe how the education system works, especially for those with special needs.

Combining his experiences there with research he’d collected in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Europe, Vincent used the data in his doctoral dissertation, “The Emergent Charter School Model for Ninth Grade Mildly Disabled Students: Extending to Africa.”

He is now an assistant professor of special education at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., and founder and creative director of Pink Grape Consulting LLC.

Master of Science COUNSELING

Master of Science FINANCE

COUNSELING F INANCE / HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Apply your knowledge of financial theories, practices and technologies to solve complex economic challenges — and create value for organizations and consumers. You’ll critique and interpret financial data to assess and improve entity performance within a moral and ethical framework.

Learn in small classes from faculty experts with experience who know what it takes to be successful in this field — and who’ll get to know you and your career aspirations.

Through electives, you’ll have the option of selecting one of two tracks to prepare for the Certified Financial Planner or Chartered Financial Analyst designation examinations.

With this degree, you’ll be prepared for a variety of management positions in businesses of any kind or size around the world, as well as consulting firms, investing firms and other financial institutions.

Prepare to serve the community as a clinical mental health counselor or an addictions counselor after 18 months of full-time study.

Build the counseling skills that integrate theoretical foundations of professional counseling into positive client interaction and intervention skills, as are required of a master’s level clinician.

This 60-credit program is designed to qualify students to become licensed counselors. Delivered in a cohort model, the program emphasizes the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills essential for professional counselors who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services.

You’ll learn from faculty who are practitioners and hold certifications and licenses in their specialty areas. They’ll bring their experience within the field to your classroom.

You’ll follow a curriculum designed to meet accreditation criteria by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs. It will cover topics such as multicultural counseling theories and techniques, health and wellness counseling, leadership in agency settings and — depending on your focus — topics in addictions counseling or mental health counseling.

In our counseling training laboratory, you’ll receive practical experiential training and digital versions of recorded counseling sessions so you can hone your skills as a counselor.

In addition to the course work required, you’ll complete a 150-hour practicum and 600 hours of internship experiences, both of which count towards hours for licensure. Both will be completed under the supervision of clinical professionals so that

you’ll develop counseling skills that integrate theoretical foundations of professional counseling — leading to certification and/or licensing in your chosen field.

NEW PROGRAM STARTING IN 2016–17

With data breaches increasing in severity and complexity, threatening retailers, banks, gaming networks, consumers, government and more, information security has become a critical function in the technology sector.

Prepare for a career as a physician assistant, a health care professional who is licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of a physician, through our 24-month, 104-credit, full-time course of study.*

Through this program, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the basic medical sciences, while learning to appreciate the pathogenesis of disease mechanisms from which an understanding of clinical medicine and therapeutics can evolve.

CURRICULUM

During the first 12 months of the program, you’ll follow a curriculum of preclinical studies in preparation for 12 months of clinical experiences.

Year One

Your preclinical courses are progressive and integrated to optimize in-class and personal/group study time. The first summer semester builds a foundation in basic science and

patient care skills. During the fall and spring semesters, you will study each individual body system (cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, etc.) one at a time, focusing on the physiology, pathophysiology, medicine, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in that system before continuing on to the next system. You will then move to modules in specific populations and specialties to include pediatrics, geriatrics, emergency medicine and surgery.

Year Two

Your second year consists of clinical studies, beginning with a three-week introduction to clinical practice. You will complete nine clinical rotations, including seven required rotations in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, Women’s Health, Behavioral and Mental Health, Emergency Medicine and General Surgery. The remaining two rotations are electives that allow you to further develop skills in the area in which you plan to practice.

This program is designed to meet the requirements that candidates must satisfy to take the Physician Assistant National Certification Examination. For more information, visit www.nccpa.net.

Ed.D. EDUCATION LEADERSHIP Ed.D PROGRAM

Education reform is a dominant social policy issue requiring experienced, well-educated practitioners to lead change. Our unique program is designed to produce such practitioners for a range of leadership positions at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels.

Brenda Dann-Messier ’00 Ed.D.Former Assistant Secretary for Career, Technical and Adult Education, United States Department of Education

Education and Workforce Consultant

Adjunct Faculty, Johnson & Wales University

Brenda Dann-Messier ’00 Ed.D., has worked to improve access to education for much of her career, with a primary emphasis on adult, career and technical education, correctional education, and supporting community colleges.

As former Assistant Secretary for Career, Technical and Adult Education, Dann-Messier’s centerpiece achievement was the development of a plan unveiled by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in spring 2012 that invests $1 billion in education. Entitled “Investing in America’s Future: A Blueprint for Transforming Career and Technical Education”, the plan calls for strengthened emphasis on STEM disciplines along with closer ties with industry. It ensures that the skills taught in CTE programs reflect the labor market’s 21st-century needs, specifically for in-demand occupations within high-growth sectors.

Nowadays, Dann-Messier is back in Rhode Island, working as an independent consultant and as an adjunct faculty member at JWU teaching a class on community and family engagement. She speaks highly of the program’s experiential, cohort-based model. “It prepares leaders for real-life experience, not simply dispensing lofty, abstract ideas,” she says.
