February 2015 [email protected]

Hi gang, Still hurting! I broke cartledge and it is 3 times more painful and 3 times longer to heal. My doctor gave me 30 pain killers to take only at bed time so I can lay down and get some sleep. I have been able to drive for a week.

My wife Liz will get to stand on both legs for the first time sense Feb 10 on May 5. She will be doing that in with her doctor. She has been using up her 333 days of sick leave so the pay check keeps coming right now. She is anxious to go back to work at the SSA office about 4 miles from us. I think we are going to have some one wrap us in bubble wrap, hi hi.

Kent who posts KAR on his web site came through the back surgery and has been home several weeks. He said the surgery has relieved him of the terrible back pain.

Last month I removed space for ARES reports from the non-reporting stations whichleaves us with only 5 active ARES counties out of 105 counties. I don't know how many ARES appointments are active or in-active, but it does not look like many

ARES members are active in Kansas. I say this cuz ALL holders of ARRL appointments are to report monthly to the Ks Section Manager and I hope for a CC for KAR to let Ks hams know what is going on in Ks. I sure hope we have more active ARES members than are reporting their activities. http://ksarrl.org/ares/alphaks.php/

u ARRL Field Day is June 27-28, 2015 It is not TOOoooo soon to start planning this year's FD! Do you have your site secured? Is the generator in gud working condition? Is ??????

u Larry, here is a CW program that should be of interest to a lot of Hams. It’s a CW trainer which is similar to the Koch method; ALSO it has a Field Day trainer. It sends the call, classification, and location (State) which I'm excited about. It’s going to help that OLD gray matter between my ears that seems to be getting fuzzy....

u Hi All- Here’s an interesting clip: a mysterious noise source shows up last Friday and blocks garage door openers and electronic car locks in a downstate Illinois neighborhood. At first, ham radio is blamed, then a local ham steps upto isolate the problem using an HT and simple direction-finding techniques. <http://www.illinoishomepage.net/story/d/story/neigborhood-with-unusual-blackout-wants-answers/86896/LiCD7UjWf0uluwjjmcfB5g> 73, Sean Kutzko, KX9XMedia and Public Relations Manager ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio225 Main St.Newington, CT 06111860-594-0328<[email protected]>Web: <http://www.arrl.org><http://www.twitter.com/arrl_pr>

u Do you still get net reports? Paul

Hi Paul, All net reports should go to the Net Mgr and our Section Mgr and a CC to me for KAR. KAR is not part of ARRL so not mandatory but a Ks tradition sense Ken Blair KCØGL created KAR 30/40 years ago as an exceptional magazine, now digital. I no longer hold any ARRL appointments due to bad health. I am happy to get a CC net report to put in KAR for all to see the Ks activity. Any ham holding a ARRL appointment from the Ks ARRL Section Mgr is to once a month report his activity to theSM. If you look at QST B4 WWII you will see that tfc handling was the big activity and there was a lot of reporting but technology has changed that except for a disaster.

TU 4 your question! I appreciate them.

u Hi Orlan,

I worked this Special Event station KØL from Emporia this afternoon, thought you might like to read about it if you hadn’t already. Evidently they have the school ham station going now. I hope the sky is clear to allow watching the eclipse.

Have a Happy Easter and give our best to Liz

LUNAR ECLIPSE

The third of four total lunar eclipses in a row will be here on 4 April 2015. We will be back on the air from 1 April 2015 until the lunar eclipse finishes, band conditions permitting and activity on the bands. We hope that we hear you on the bands or see you on the waterfall. Look for us on 20 or 15 during the day and 80 and 40 during the evening hours in North America. We will be running mostly SSB during the day and PSK31 during the night.

If you would like a QSL card for the third lunar eclipse, please send a self-addressed envelope by 10 May 2015

The Emporia State University Amateur Radio Club and the Emporia Amateur Radio Society are hosting this special event station to call attention to the lunar eclipse that will be seen from the western part of North Americaon the morning of 4 April 2015, depending upon the weather. The peak of the eclipse will occur when the moon is over the pacific Ocean, so most locations around the Pacific Rim will have an opportunity to see the eclipse depending upon local weather conditions. Because of the timing of the eclipse, the total eclipse will be right at moonset in the central part of North America. The schedule for the lunar eclipse is below. To find out more about the eclipses for 2015 from NASA visit their web site. This is eclipse number 30 in the Saros series 132. This willbe the shortest eclipse in this series and the shortest total eclipse for this century, as the total phase of the eclipse will last last than 5 minutes. For more information about viewing the eclipse and other general information, visit this article with several nice diagrams.

Penumbral Eclipse Begins: 09:01:27 UTC (4 am in the central daylight time)

Partial Eclipse Begins: 10:15:45 UTC

Total Eclipse Begins: 11:57:54 UTC

Greatest Eclipse: 12:01:37 UTC

Total Eclipse Ends: 12:02:37 UTC

Partial Eclipse Ends: 13:44:45 UTC

Penumbral Eclipse Ends: 14:58:58 UTC

The qsl card, which is in the upper right corner, will have the photo of the moon substituted with a shot of the eclipse. Of course, that depends upon the sky being clear over eastern Kansas that evening. Thanks to Jason Brinkman, KSØSZ, for the design of the card.

We will print cards after the event so as to have the right amount of cards. If you want a card, please send your request to us by 10 May 2015. We will get return cards in the mail to you soon after that.

Thank you for visiting our page and we hope to exchange qsl cards with those who worked us.

u I feel compelled to respond - I've been licensed since 1962, and in that time, have experienced MANY sides to this argument. First and FOREMOST, if you want to be part of an organization (and it being ham radio - I usethat term VERY loosely), you ALSO must extend some effort to be welcomed. I realize we're not all "used car salesmen" (no slam at them - I used to do it), and don't have the gift of gab, but you gotta' stick your hand out there, and say HI.

Now - that said, yep... it's gone the other way too; ahhh, but like a TV set, it has an on/off switch, so if you don't like the "reception", change the channel. I've experienced the unwelcomeness [ is that a word? ] and in spite of my attempts to penetrate the "I've-been-a-member-here-longer-than-you" attitude, sometimes you just have to figure out that it's not the place you want to hang your hat.

To "A Member You Lost"... yep, a few lost me too - I've experienced it EVERYWHERE. Heck, I was a little sawed-off TINY kid in school, who couldn't play sports, barely could LIFT a basketball, and damned sure couldn'thandle it with any acumen, but these long years later, it really doesn't matter (I COULD do chinups all day, and climb those ropes at SMN like a monkey!). Yes, it's time for "organizations" to realize where they came from... from the kid who just earned his TECHNICIAN with a lot of studying and maybe they STILL don't understand those questions they answered... to the seasoned amateur who remembers the smell of "burned dirt" atop the tubes in a Johnson Ranger or Hallicrafters S-38 - but like a driving license... it's an opportunity to LEARN - too bad the political arm of our "professional" radio associations forget that a lot.
