Seminar Date: October 30, 2015 Speakers: Dr. Adam Boyko, Asst Professor, Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell U Ryan Boyko, Ph.D. candidate in epidemiology of microbial diseases, School of Public Health, Yale U Abstract of Proposed Talk: Basenjis are one of the most ancient dog breeds left in the world today. Although Africa was not the cradle of dog domestication, dogs have been in Sub-Saharan Africa for over 6,000 years, evolving to adapt to diverse landscapes and cultures. Modern dog populations in parts of Africa and elsewhere are under increasing threat of genetic dilution or extinction by the import of foreign dogs. Using genetic analysis of breeds, landraces and village dogs from around the world, we can deduce many aspects of the population history of dogs, including both the initial domestication origins and the degree to which various extant dog populations have been intermixed or overwhelmed by foreign dogs. Interestingly, land races and local breeds often carry genetic signatures matching local village dog populations and not those of related but geographically separate breeds. Genetic signatures from both West Africa and Congo are apparent in American basenjis, as expected based on the multiple imports used to found and expand the breed. Estimated expenses are $1200. Please indicate your vote. Approve: Auerbach, Brown, Geoffroy, Gregory, Hutchison, Jones, Ketz, La Croix, Vertrees, Work
