Prayer

2nd March, 2018

Dear Parents and Friends,

We held our final Parent Evening last night for Year 8 families. My thanks to all those parents who attended. If you have any feedback, positive or constructive, I am sure the Student Development Leaders would welcome it. Building a strong home-school is pivotal to children seeing the value in education. I am sure these partnerships will continue to strengthen as the year progresses. If, for any reason, you were not able to make your daughter’s parent session, please feel welcome to contact her Homeroom teacher to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. The powerpoint presentations for each night are also available on the Parent Portal on the College website.

Building family-school partnershipsThe characteristics that indicate effective partnerships are:• responsive to student and family needs and aspirations• purposefully co-designed with clear goals• commitment to collaboration• mutual trust and respect• equal valuing of the different roles in the partnership• sharing of responsibility and influence• open dialogue and effective communication• appropriate and adequate resources

(source: Department of Education and Training website)

If you would like to read more about the importance of Family- School partnerships the following link will take you to a fact sheet from the Department of Education’s Family-School Partnership Framework. https://inewsletter.co/media/d054a886-633f-4deb-bcf9-38675fc65063/This week is the midway point for Term 1. It is a time when assessments will start to take place and students lose some of their enthusiasm and others may lose a bit of confidence. Neither of these are desirable and I would urge you to encourage your daughters to stay positive and view any disappointments as challenges which can be overcome with persistence and by seeking teacher assistance.

Year 7 students will embark on their camp to Phillip Island next Wednesday. We hope it is a time for them to make many new friends and have some time to reflect on their year to date. Safe journey to all girls and staff.

Wishing you and your family a safe and blessed week ahead,

Leanne Di StefanoPrincipal

Lenten thought:Following Jesus demands a good dose of courage, a readiness to trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to set out on new and unchartered paths. To blaze trails that open up new horizons capable for spreading joy, the joy that is born of God’s love. Pope

A Reflection:Lent is an important time to do a top-to-bottom review of what we value and what we actually do, in our everyday lives. Within this busy life there is a sense of urgency to rest and re-align what it is we value in our lives. To think about our actual priorities; the things that take first place in our lives. Reviewing what we actually do against what we say are our priorities, is a Lenten practice. What is it we actually value and are our values lived out in our actions?

If you have a valid Health Care Card you are eligible for the CSEF allowance from the Government, which entitles you to $225.00 per student off the cost of the school fees. If you are a current parent, have a new student at the school, or, have recently received a health care card and have not completed an application form, please come to the Finance Office to do so.

Fees

A reminder that, if you do not have an agreed instalment arrangement, tuition fees were due and payable on 28/2/18 and are now overdue. If you want an instalment plan and have not completed the form as yet, come to the Finance office as soon as possible to do so.

Finance Office News

If a student is absent from school or arriving late a parent/guardian must advise the front office by 9.00am that day, otherwise they will receive an absentee sms asking them to contact the school to confirm absence.

Students arriving late must also check in at the front office to receive a late pass. Parents must advise the front office or Homeroom teacher reason for being late.

Similarly, students leaving early must sign out via the front office and must be collected by a parent/guardian. The front office staff will contact parents for further confirmation if a student is leaving with someone other than a parent/guardian or taking public transport. Year 12s leaving early due to study periods must sign out but do not need a parent/guardian to accompany them from the school.

If a student is absent for an extended period of time (ie. holidays) parents must complete and return a Temporary Leave Form to their Homeroom teacher/Level Coordinator. These can be sourced from the front office.

Parents are not permitted to enter the school grounds at any time during the day without checking with the front office first. At no time are parents to enter their daughter’s classroom or level area without permission from the front office, including before and after school. Thank you for your cooperation.

EJ appreciates your kindness but has asked all students to NO LONGER feed her as this is making her sick, particularly when it is not cat food. However cuddles are most welcome! Cat food donations to the front office are also welcome.

Hope - Living with Purpose

On the 22nd February, seven girls from the Year 11 and 12 VCAL classes went to Springvale Park Special Developmental School with Mrs Wilman. We walked there from Killester, which was a 30-minute walk. When we got there we were greeted by a member of staff and a few of the students who go there.

Before their classes start, the students go out to the oval and run around and play to get rid of some of their energy. We all went into one of the classrooms with a teacher and played duck duck goose and a name game. We then went to Art with the same class but three of the girls from our school went to another class. In art, they created buildings from paper with two black cats. They then had recess and went to play. We all created great relationships with the students but had to leave and walk back to school. On the walk back we were talking about how much we enjoyed our time and can’t wait to go back. Some comments from the girls were:

“It was good and interesting”, Kessia“I liked how the students all got along”, Kaitlyn“The teachers were very happy to have us”, Alyssa“I like talking to the students”, Carmen“I liked how friendly all the students were towards us”, Onorina.

Caitlin Jago, Year 11 VCAL Student

On the 22nd of February, the senior VCAL girls participated in the first Killester Kar Care Car Wash. The Killester Kar Care Car Wash, is the project the Year 12 VCAL girls have chosen as their project for the year, to raise money for a charity we are yet to decide upon.

The VCAL girls had been planning this car wash two weeks before start-ing last Thursday. When planning we had to do the following:AdvertisingBudgetingDesigning Teamwork Risk assessmentLetter of approvalMeetings with leadership teamSpeaking to staff members

It was a great success for our first car wash, as we had an amazing turn out with fifteenstaff members bringing their cars to get cleaned and washed. The services we provide are vacuuming, cleaning windows and washing the car. These services are all provided at a low and reasonable price.

Our remaining dates for the Killester Kar Care Car Wash for Term 1 are:Thursday 8th MarchMonday 19th MarchThursday 29th March

Thanks from the Killester Kar Care

VCE Art Excursion to NGV International

On Saturday 24th February, the Year 12 art class and Ms Stabologlou, journeyed to the NGV International, for a presentation about what to expect for VCE Art. This was an educational day in the city. We heard from past students talking about their folio and what they have taken away from Year 12 Art. They told us about the way their folio was set out and challenges they faced. This was really eye-opening for me as I have seen what a top folio is meant to look like. I never realised what challenges I would face this year as this indeed prepared me for what is to come. This was then followed by a quick activity around the art gallery. This was mainly the best time to see past highly mark folios, and the Triennial the exhibition.

To conclude the day there was a Q and A which Linna Tea and I contributed to. In all, it was a really fun day out away from the stresses of VCE that gave the class insight into the near future.

Hope - Living with Purpose

On the 26th of February the Year 8s were fortunate enough to be able to go to Chelsea Beach as part of the Year 8 Physical Education course. We were divided into groups depending on our swimming ability and underwent a water safety program run by the lifesavers at Chelsea Life Saving Club. Wading, general water safety, rescue techniques, CPR and paddling were only some of the techniques we learnt.

We also did many fun activities, such as team relays, where we needed to use the new techniques we had learnt. This program really helped us understand how to be safe around water and what to do incase of an emergency. We are now also more aware of the precautions needed when around water.

The day was absolutely amazing and we were so lucky to have great sunny weather. Everybody had a great time and we are so grateful for the teachers and Chelsea Life Saving Club for organising the day. Belinda Morales & Kayla BrownSt Agatha & St Mary MacKillop

Undeniably Enjoyable Musical Performance

On Wednesday the 21st of February, the Year 9s were lucky enough to watch a musical performance by two talented musicians, Mal Webb & Kylie Morrigan. This duo is the definition of entertainment. With many different instruments and styles of music, they never failed to amaze the audience with a new style/form of music that nobody had ever heard before. The originality that Mal Webb brings to his music is incredible and something I have never seen before. With Mal having started his musical journey at 4 years old, learning the drums, and Kylie beginning as a classical violinist, it is amazing the progress and originality they bring to the musical world.

Mal and Kylie performed a range of original songs all written by Mal Webb himself. The performance began with an opening fanfare, which consisted of the duo both playing a form of trombone. From this start, everybody in the room knew that these performers were like no other. ‘Sound of Love’ was the next song performed for the Year 9’s. This song alone was a new style for the majority of the audience and I can easily say this style of music is not what we’d listen to on a daily basis, but it was definitely enjoyable.

The next song was called, ‘Ad for beer’. It was a song about Mal and how he didn’t want to be an ‘ad for beer’ as previously he has done many performances in bars, and didn’t like the idea of him basically being an advertisement for beer and alcohol.

‘URFES’ was an unusual but relatable song that was next on the list. This acronym stands for ‘Unfortunate Resting Facial Expression Syndrome’. He also sang about other acronyms he made up about relatable situations. This song was definitely humorous and original.

The famous ‘Packrack’ was next. I personally have heard this song before and absolutely loved it! In this song, he sang in many ways and languages, including backwards, Opera, Icelandic, Bulgarian, Maori, French, German and many other ways also. It was an eye-opener to other styles of music aside from the traditional music we listen to today.

‘Give it up’ was the last song they sang. This song was written about Mal’s brother and how he hated when people said, ‘Give it up’ as, in general, he didn’t under-stand the term. Every song had a meaning behind it, which was very interesting.

I definitely loved this performance! It was original, different, funny, relatable and overall a great experience. To see how music can be interpreted in other ways is absolutely fascinating. Mal and Kylie are a great example of this. Looking around the room, all the Year 9s had a smile on their faces and would laugh along with Mal and Kylie, which was a good change for the year level instead of doing our day-to-day schooling. I personally was lucky enough to do a workshop with Mal after the performance and it taught me many new things. He attempted to teach us to Beatbox, how to use the looping pedal and how these instruments are incorporated and used in his music.

From the performance and workshop, I walked away learning something new, whether it be about the duo, about styles of music or how to use different equip-ment/instruments. I realised from this day, that what we normally listen to on the radio or on music streaming apps is not the boundaries of music, but there is a whole world of music we all don’t know about or haven't experienced. I strongly recommend all that read this listen to Mal’s music, and you will not be disap-pointed in what he can do and the boundaries he crosses to embrace all aspects of music.

Last week our elected leaders from Years 8-12 assembled to participate in a leadership training day. The five committees - Arts, Student Council, Celebrations, Community Service, Celebrations and the House leaders spent the day discussing the qualities of successful leadership.

The concepts of servant leadership, consensus, cooperation, articulating and acting on ideas, role modelling, rapport and empathy were examined. Students developed skills relating to setting agendas, running successful meetings, organising events and problem solving. Each committee then worked together to set goals for the year and plan events. The Committees and Houses each have a pinnacle week during the year where they highlight their work and focus.

Our new Year 7 students will be able able to nominate themselves, to represent their peers in elections, early in Term 2.

Ms Luana DokoStudent Development Leader

Senior student reflections on the training day:

“The Leadership Training Day was very insightful relating to the aspects of being a role model in the Killester community” Jillian Arkoudis - Celebrations Leader
