ABOUT THE KITTYHAWKS
During a break at an open tournament at Okahu Bay in 1977 a germ of an idea from Bos Kostinich
and Bob McDonald took life. From a table in the clubhouse doorway they compiled a short list of
willing prospects on show and so started what was to become the Kittyhawk Bowling Club!
Soon after this on 20th December 1977 this initial group of 25 met and threw ideas around. The
principle thoughts were to develop a loosely structured club along the lines of the Eagles Golfing
Society. The main objective was to draw together bowlers who had already contributed time and
effort to their own clubs, and could now enjoy the company of a wider group.
From this a steering committee of Bos Kostinich, Marshall Smith, Cliff Shanks, Colin Brown and Bob
McDonald was formed and known as the ‘Crusaders’ to put together some ideas. A meeting called
for the 8th March 1978 was attended by 50 bowlers. After much discussion and good humour, with
many ideas shared, the ‘Kittyhawk Bowling Club’ was born.
The first Annual Meeting was held in June 1978. Bos Kostinich was elected Founder President and
Cliff Shanks presented a draft set of regulations. Colin Brown’s ideas were considered best! So
started the now familiar soft gold colour Blazers. Original ties and badges and monograms, which
were soon replaced by the present discreet design.
The Auckland Kittyhawk also includes Counties and North Harbour, and in recent years have spread
to Northland, Taranaki, Tauranga and Dunedin. Both Kittyhawk and Bowls New Zealand’s wish to see
Kittyhawk have a more national flavour.
The membership of the Kittyhawks is kept at around 120 people and the administration has done
their utmost to have a membership who;
a. Have a profile in the sport OR
b. Are well known people in the bowling community OR
c. Have a commitment to fund raising events
They also endeavour to have a membership who are able to take an active role, rather than
members who just want to be members or who are unable to take an active role.
Over the years the Kittyhawks have raised many thousands of dollars for the Halberg Trust and this
involvement is acknowledged each year at the Halberg NZ Sports Award function.

The Kittyhawk National Under 20 Men’s and Women’s Singles played annually at Easter weekend is now well established as a nursery for our up and coming Blackjacks. The Sets format that has been used in the past 2-3 seasons has now been abandoned and play will revert to the more usual format of 21 shots up but with a Time Limit of 1 ¾ hours. The field at the National event is made up of 32 men and 16 women. The quality the field this year is once again outstanding with many of the contestants having played in the recent trans-Tasman series against Australia. Once again the qualifiers from all Regions have had to progress through a Regional Qualifying event to progress to the national finals. Such is the evenness and strength of the players coming through from around the country that even some of the selected players for the trans-Tasman missed out on qualifying for the finals! With the natural age attrition there were three Wild Card opportunities for the men this year and these went to the Mason twins Oliver and Elliot and to Dean Drummond and they join Sheldon Bagrie-Howley (a previous winner), Cameron Bailey, Richard Hocking, Ethan Kelliher and Taylor Horn as automatic entries. However there are a number of younger bowlers who have been making their mark in the secondary schools completion who will give some these players a hurry-up. Picking a winner is very difficult in what is a very even field. Last year’s runner up in the Women’s event, Siobhan Archer, while still eligible will not be taking her place in the field this year and her place has been taken by Cait Bassett (who played in the trans-Tasman series) from the Allenton Club in Ashburton. Another player from the trans-Tasman who gained entry through a player withdrawal is MacKenzie Blucher from the Te Atatu Peninsula Club in Auckland. Both these players are sure to be among the strong contenders in the women’s field which also includes last year’s winner Selina Goddard (now resident in Australia), Holly McIlroy, Tayla Bruce, Katelyn Inch and Nicole Toomey – just to name a few in what is a very high quality field. The quarter-finalists from the men’s event last year and the semi-finalists from last year’s women’s event are all accorded automatic entry into this year’s event provided they are still eligible age-wise The criteria is 19 years of age or under on Good Friday of the current year. Those who do not qualify automatically will have had to qualify at Regional Playoffs.

WELCOME
Welcome to all players, officials, markers, umpires and supporters to the 2014 Kittyhawk Under 20 National
Singles. This is the 23rd time this tournament has been held and right from its beginnings it has held a very
important place in our “Pathways” programme. Youth bowls is the future of the game and with the growing
number of youth playing bowls that focus is now greater than ever.
This Pathway has seen many players who have succeeded at this tournament go on to higher levels both
nationally and for the Blackjacks. I’m very confident that with the calibre of field we have playing this year
that this trend will continue.
Don Wilson and his colleagues from Kittyhawk Bowls Incorporated have always ensured that this event is
delivered in a manner that reflects its prestigious standing. They are again well supported by Bowls Auckland.
Without both these parties this event would not have the proud history it enjoys and for that we sincerely
thank them.
The Pakuranga Bowling Club are again the hosts and we thank them for their support. The tremendous
efforts of their tournament team and use of their excellent facilities is greatly appreciated.
I’m sure you will enjoy the tournament both on and off the green. I now look forward to watching a few days
of great bowls. Good luck!

President, Bowls New Zealand
On behalf of Auckland Bowls I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the players, supporters and
officials to the 2014 Kittyhawk National Under 20 Singles Championships.
This is a tournament of great prestige in the bowls calendar and has launched the bowling career of many top
players.
Special thanks to the Kittyhawk Bowling Club members and to the Pakuranga Bowling Club members for once
again hosting this event. The many hours put in by the various volunteers to organise and run this event is
very much appreciated. I would also like to thank the Blue Waters Community Trust for their financial
support of this event.
Good bowling and enjoy the experience.
Peter McKechnie
President, Bowls Auckland
On behalf of Kittyhawk Bowls a very warm welcome to all concerned with the 2014 Kittyhawk National Under
20 Singles tournament. Again the entries are of a very high standard which augurs well for a great weekend of
bowls.
I offer my congratulations to those who have qualified and wish you every success in this weekend’s
tournament. I sincerely hope it is just the beginning of your involvement with the top tier of bowls events
nationally and for some of you even internationally. There is no better example of this than last year’s winner
Selina Goddard who this year has already gone on to being a member of the Nationals winning fours team
and playing in the trans-Tasman.
In addition to this, friendships are formed and renewed every year on the bowling greens around the country
and because bowls is a game for life these friendships can, and do, literally last a lifetime.
Enjoy the tournament, play well and good luck.
