Rev. Armando Ibanez, O.P. - Dominican FriarNoted Preacher, Poet, Filmmaker, College Educator
By Joe T. Kovach, KC Member since 1996 For the past seven months Father Armando P. Ibanez, O.P., has been mesmerizing St. Raphael parishioners with his most impressive, vividly expressive and exciting God-given homilies along with his interesting style of preaching with truly strong feelings and desires of his heart while walking up and down the aisles gracefully looking directly at people young and old. A native of San Diego, Texas (north of Corpus Christi), Father joined the Knights of Columbus at St. Bernard’s parish in 2004 while serving for two years as Director of Ministry. Father was ordained a priest on December 11, 1993 at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego. His impressive resume: preacher, poet, filmmaker, college educator and Dominican friar. When asked about his associate pastor duties at St. Raphael, Father explained, “Currently, my assignment is for one year. I don’t know about an extension; this is up to somebody else. Of course, the Good Lord will have the final say. I’m very honored that you asked.” “Faith is alive and thriving in the parish,” Father added. Father emphasized, “One of the best things about coming to St. Raphael’s is witnessing and being part of a vibrant faith community. I am so impressed with the love parishioners have for their church. This is evident in so many ways, especially in the prayerful presence of parishioners attending Mass, and the great dedication of caring and dedicated Sacristans, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Musicians, Cantors, Altar Servers and School Teachers.” Father added, “One of the things that is most freeing and helpful to me as a priest is coming to the sacristy and everything is prepared or being prepared by sacristans and ministers. As a result, I am free to focus on prayer in preparation for the celebration of the Mass and the homily. Of course, Father Bruce and Noel have done an outstanding job in organizing the parish. And I tip my hat to them as well.” As part of his parish responsibilities, Father visits the sick and on occasion has ministered the last rites. “I have had the privilege of praying with people before the moment of their deaths. Truly, the grace of God was present,” he said, adding “I’m sure Pastor Bruce Correio and Father Arthur Najera, agree with me that the Holy Spirit makes His presence known in some way during the time of death.” “I have great faith in God, and I believe that the Holy Spirit led me to Goleta, as well as my little doggie, Angelique,” he smiled. Father Armando owns a toy Pomeranian, who has been his faithful companion for the past nine years. “When I first came here many parishioners asked for my little doggie’s name, before they asked for mine,” he joked. “But that’s totally okay. She’s a beauty and is a great blessing from the Lord.” Prior to coming to St. Raphael’s, Fr. Armando, a friar of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), served as Chaplain for 11-years at one of Hollywood’s best-kept secrets - the Monastery of the Angels. During his tenure as Chaplain, he also served as Director of Hispanic Ministry at St. Dominic’s in Eagle Rock for 4 years. This past academic year, Father Armando taught Mass Communication and Media Production at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and in the previous two years, taught screenwriting, directing, producing and editing at Tribeca-Flashpoint Media Arts Academy in Chicago. “Storytelling, primarily through film, is very much part of my calling,” Father Armando said. “Mass Media, as we know, is the most powerful means of communicating with people, and story is the best means of reaching the human heart,” noted Father, a graduate of The America Film Institute (AFI). Fr. Armando, with a group of dedicated professionals from all walks of life, founded Pluma Pictures, Inc. in 2001. The non-profit 501c film production company is dedicated to producing films with inherent universal values, such as truth, peace, justice, beauty and the importance of family and community.
Father wrote, produced and directed the company’s first feature documentary, entitled “Not Broken,” about the Hurricane Katrina disaster, which won a Platinum Remi Award from WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2008. This past year, he produced and directed a 13-minute film short, entitled “Man of the People” - Dr. Hector P. Garcia, about a physician who dedicated his life to the poor and human rights. The film won WorldFest-Houston’s Remi Bronze Award 2012 and an Honorable Mention Award 2012 from the Los Angeles Movie Awards. In addition, Fr. Armando, in collaboration with a group of his former students, produced and directed another short, Darfur-Raging Genocide Continues, which also won a Bronze Remi Award from WorldFest Houston 2009. “My hope is to show ‘Not Broken’ here at St. Raphael’s sometime in the near future,” Father said, “as well as my other films.” He’d love to get our parishioners’ feedback. Fr. Armando has won numerous writing awards, including AFI’s Colin Higgins Screenplay Production Award for the screenplay he wrote for his thesis film at AFI. While a journalist before entering the Southern Dominican Province in 1988, headquartered in New Orleans, he won the Sweepstakes Award - the top prize awarded by the Harte-Hanks newspaper chain - for writing an investigative newspaper series, as well as several first place journalism awards. He is listed in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and has published three books of poetry and produced a poetry CD. The poetry books are: Midday Shadows; Wrestling with Angel - A Collection of Poetry, Revised Ed. (hardcover, 2001); and Wrestling with the Angel - a Collection of Poetry (soft cover, 1997). They are available on Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/Wrestling-With-Angel-Collection-Poetry/dp/1889848018/ref=sr 1 1?ie+UTF8&qid=1358892577&sr=81&keywords=Wrestling+with+the+Angel+-+a+collection+of+poetry. A CD of his selected poems, entitled Poems of Stone and Bread will be made available soon. Noted harpist Patrice Fisher of New Orleans accompanies Father Armando in his reading of his works. Father Armando invites you to visit the film production company’s website: www.plumapictures.com.
