A fundamental part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, the Cricket Australia Underage Female National Championships have been the largest contributor of talent to the National team since its establishment. Lauren Cheatle played in the ICC WT20 World Cup in India earlier this year at 17 years of age and other stars such as, Jess Jonassen, Ellyse Perry and captain Meg Lanning have all trodden the same path you are about to undertake.
As players, you enter an exciting phase of your sporting journey, I encourage you all to embrace the opportunity by exemplifying the cricketing spirit.
I wish you all the very best over the next seven days and I look forward to witnessing your development into the stars of the future in the seasons to come.

2016/2017
The competition will be fierce at the 2016-17 Cricket Australia Under 18 Female National Championships, with the best junior talent from across the country competing for the honour of being crowned national champions.
Eight squads will vie for that title in Hobart, in what promises to be a highly entertaining week of cricket.
Victoria won last year’s Championships, defeating New South Wales Metro in the tournament final to break an 11-year streak to claim the Betty Butcher Shield.
Last year’s Player of the Final, Georgia Wareham, returns for the Victorian side,
which will be desperate to defend its crown.
But can they go back-to-back? Or will there be a new winner this time around?
CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW
female Indigenous squad on their tour to India earlier this year. According to Gardner, leading the squad was as good as it gets.
“It was an awesome experience playing for my country and obviously representing my culture at a high level like that isn't comparable to anything this far.”
The future looks as bright as ever for Gardner, the attacking off-spin bowler preparing for her second season in the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers with the Governor-General’s XI clash against South Africa in November.
Now at just 19, Gardner has crafted her attacking off-spin bowling to accompany her big hitting and is just one step away from living out her childhood dream.
From Picnic Point in the south-west of Sydney, Sydney Sixers all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been a shining
light since taking to the field for Revesby Workers Cricket Club.
ASHLEIGH GARDNER STAR ON THE RISE
Beginning her career in the backyard like so many Australian girls and boys, Gardner made her first NSW school team in Year 5 at the age of 11 and continued to impress as she made her way through the State’s underage sides to eventually be named as captain of NSW’s Under 18 side in 2013.
It wasn’t the success however, that drew her to the game.
“The passion and love I have for the game is why I continue playing it,” said Gardner.
In 2015, Gardner announced herself as a player to watch after finishing as leading run scorer at Cricket Australia’s Under 18 Championships with 199 runs, leading NSW to the title and being named Player of the Championship.
In the same year, Gardner became the first woman to be named Lord’s Taverners Indigenous Player of the Year, whilst also being named Player of the Tournament at the Imparja Cup and making her Women’s National Cricket League debut for the Lendlease NSW Breakers.
At 18, Gardner was soon becoming the player that she had looked up to for so long and was mixing with her idols.
“My idol was actually Andrew Symonds, unfortunately I've never played with him but I've always admired Ellyse Perry on the outlook she has about cricket on and off the field.”
Having already donned the Australian colours for the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars’ tours of Sri Lanka and Dubai, Gardner topped off an already-sparkling career with selection in Australia’s first

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LOVE OF THE GAME
It’s all about the love of the game
- that will be the key message delivered from
West Australian coach Orazio Santalucia to his
chargers in Hobart ahead of this season’s Cricket Australia
Under 18 National Championships. As he prepares for his second stint in
charge of the Western Australian team, his passion for coaching and teaching our great game really shines through. He is the consummate professional when it comes to the coaching of talented athletes.
“KEEP UP A HUNGER TO LEARN AND TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME A BETTER COACH.”
“KEEP UP A HUNGER TO LEARN AND TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME A BETTER COACH.”
Orazio Santalucia
After playing cricket in different parts of the world, Santalucia was a top order batter and leg-spin bowler in his playing days.
“I was fortunate to play cricket in different parts of the world. Here in Australia I played a majority of my cricket at Sub District level in Melbourne with Preston Cricket Club. In the UK I played Premier League level in the various areas I lived and worked, said Santalucia”
Following his playing days, it became apparent that he had a passion for coaching as he obtained his Level I coaching accreditation in 1996 and began some holiday clinic work.
“From here I travelled to the UK and really increased my coaching education as begun to coach in schools, at club level and representative level for a number of years in different environments.
“I was also fortunate to gain ECB coaching awards up to Level III. I worked in Belfast (Northern Ireland), Edinburgh (Scotland), Gloucestershire and my final position in the UK was as the Manager and Head Coach of the Isle of Wight Cricket Academy which was an exciting role,” Santalucia recalls.
Upon his return to Australia, Santalucia took up an opportunity to coach in
different parts of country Victoria and New South Wales before obtaining a coveted Regional Cricket Manager role with the WACA.
In July 2015, Santalucia moved into the role of Development Coach – Female programs.
“Here I took on the State U15 and U18 coaching roles as well as working with the Western Fury and Perth Scorchers in the Rebel WBBL. Along the way I have also completed my CA Level III coaching accreditation.”
When quizzed about his coaching role models, he doesn’t have to look too far.
“There were some really fantastic people in the UK that I learned a lot from as a young coach, but if I was going to narrow the list down then one person who stood out for me was Andy Stovold at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.”
“Here at the WACA I am extremely fortunate to be surrounded by some amazing coaches such as Justin Langer, Lisa Keightly and Geoff Marsh just to name a few, who I regularly chat to and observe to continually learn”.
Santalucia is a big believer in passing on his enthusiasm for whomever he is lucky enough to coach.
“Keep up a hunger to learn and take every opportunity to become a better coach. Build relationships and get to know as much as you can about the person you are coaching, and finally, always bring your coaching back to the game, ask yourself how your sessions will make the players better at playing the game, keep it simple.”
His approach to the Championships will be to make sure the all his players know what a great learning environment they are being exposed to.
“What better opportunity can you get as a player to measure your development than where the best players in your peer group are together in one place?”
“I try to create a calm environment where we try to set some small, simple individual and team goals for the team to work toward and believe in teaching and working through processes rather than necessarily playing to win at all costs.
“I am keen to develop future Western Fury and Southern Stars players.”
“I also try to pick up information on current trends and standards which help us to progress our own programs here in WA.”
Having begun her umpiring journey with a season of junior cricket, Ashlee Kovalevs is now in her fifth season of umpiring. Hailing from Perth, Kovalevs has been selected to attend her fourth consecutive Cricket Australia Under 18 National Championships. This will be her first time umpiring in Hobart and after making her Women’s National Cricket League debut (WNCL) at the WACA earlier this season, she is really looking forward to the challenge of Umpiring in Hobart.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT UMPIRING? “I enjoy being part of the game, certainly there is no better view. While
I haven’t played cricket myself my Dad and brothers have always been involved. Through them my interest in the sport grew.”
WHO ARE YOUR UMPIRING ROLE MODELS?“I certainly thank my Dad for getting me involved initially. Standing with him in my first game helped my confidence develop. Since then I have had many great umpires around me who have provided feedback and support. I have been especially fortunate to have been partnered with two mentors – Nathan Johnstone and Claire Polosak, who have both given me heaps of encouragement and helped build my capacity as an umpire.”
WHAT’S THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CRICKET YOU HAVE UMPIRED?“I recently debuted in the WNCL, officiating a game between ACT and Victoria at the WACA.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING UMPIRES?“Take every opportunity that comes your way. Observe, listen to and learn from other umpires.”
The National Championships provide a challenging environment for umpires, who are tested by travelling to a new city; standing in matches with new partners and managing unfamiliar teams at foreign venues.
Each state and territory nominates a preferred candidate to attend the Championship. The Cricket Australia Umpire Educator and the CA Umpire Coach then appoint the umpires for the championship. The CA Umpire Coach and Umpire Educator attend the Championships to observe and provide assessments and feedback for each of the individuals to help the umpires on their journeys in the umpiring pathway.
On ‘rest’ days, the umpiring group will attend education and training sessions to assist their continual development on and off field.
