RYAN Harris and PeterSiddle got Australia off toa flying start in theirthrilling pursuit of a thirdTest victory on day five atOld Trafford.

However, with Austra-lia needing to win thematch to keep the Ashesalive, and wet weatherthreatening to spoil theirparty at any moment, it re-mained to be seen how cru-cial a Michael Clarke drop-ped catch off Joe Rootwould prove in the finalwash-up.

At lunch on the final dayEngland were 3-35 from 20overs, with Harris taking2-13 from seven and Siddle1-6 from three.

Root was not out 13 andIan Bell unbeaten on two, with England already outof DRS reviews.

Harris trapped Englandskipper Alastair Cook (0)plumb lbw in the thirdover of the day to leaveEngland 1-0.

He had an excruciat-ingly close lbw review onJonathan Trott turneddown by umpire’s call, but got his man nickingdown the leg-side (11) inthe next over.

Siddle had Root edgingto Clarke at second slipwhen brought on for hisfirst over, but a simplechance was grassed, theball hitting the skipper onhis wrists.

In Siddle’s next over, hehad Kevin Pietersen con-troversially out.

Umpire Tony Hill raisedhis finger.

Pietersen immediatelysignalled for a review, ada-mant he hadn’t hit it.

HotSpot showed noth-ing, but there was a noiseand the decision stood.

CANTERBURY survivedJosh Dugan magic to main-tain their charge towards theNRL finals with a 39-20 come-from-behind win over StGeorge Illawarra last night.

Trailing by 12 points withhalf an hour remaining, theBulldogs scored five unans-wered tries — including adouble to man mountain SamKasiano — to solidify fifthspot on the ladder.

For much of the night it loo-ked like being the Josh Duganshow after the recently re-signed Dragons fullbackscored a first half double andset up another for JasonNightingale during a wither-ing burst by the home side.

Four straight tries gave theDragons a 48th-minute 20-8lead, but when they botched a

kick-off for the second time inthe game, the momentumshifted in the Dogs’ favour.

The much-maligned TonyWilliams did what Dogs fanshave been asking him to do allyear when he rumbled overoff a short Trent Hodkinsonpass to start the rot, the half-back again the orchestratorwhen Kasiano locked it upjust after the hour mark.

Two minutes later the Bull-dogs were in the lead whenTim Lafai sliced through toset up Josh Morris beforeKasiano and Williams se-cured their doubles to com-plete the ambush.

It looked like being a com-fortable night at the officewhen the Bulldogs scored twotries in the opening 12 min-utes, before the Dragonsturned to Dugan — who onFriday agreed to terms for an-other four years in the red V.

With little else working forthe home side, Dugan scoredtwo brilliant individual tries, the first with two big right-foot steps before a chip andchase on the stroke of half-time to give his side an un-likely lead.

He played the crucial rolein Nightingale’s try just afterthe restart and when Sam

Perrett’s missed intercept at-tempt gifted Daniel Vidot afour-pointer, the home sideappeared in control.

Meanwhile, NSW star GregBird has been slugged with agrade one dangerous contactcharge by the NRL match re-view committee following hishigh shot on Wests Tigers’Braith Anasta.

The Gold Coast back-rowerwon’t face suspension if he ta-kes the early guilty plea forthe incident in the Titans’ 36-6home win on Sunday.

Should he contest thecharge in front of the NRLjudiciary tomorrow and losehe would miss one game.

Cronulla veteran JohnMorris was charged withtripping Warriors centreKonrad Hurrell in the Sharks’impressive victory in Auck-land on Saturday.

Rising star joins Cowboys’ senior squad to muddy waters on Bowen’s futureNORTH Queensland star MattBowen’s uncertain NRL futurehas become more intriguingafter the club elevated risinglocal fullback Zac Santo on atwo-year deal yesterday.

Bowen impressed in Satur-day night’s 30-12 upset overSouth Sydney but admits he’sunsure whether he wants toplay on for a 14th season.

The physical rigours of thecompetition and the 31-year-old’s continued knee problemshave put the elusive fullbackon the road to retirement.

Contract talks with the clubwere put on hold last weekdue to the axing of coach NeilHenry for 2014, but are set toresume this weekend.

While he’s also been men-

tioned as a target for rivalclubs, Bowen indicated onMonday that his body woulddetermine his future — a de-cision that could spark atussle for his No.1 jumper.

A member of Queensland’sJunior Origin squad, Santowas the Cowboys Under-20player of 2012 and his HoldenCup form has seen him pro-

moted to the senior squad de-spite an injury-hit season.

The club’s record-holder formost games played and triesscored, Bowen praised the20-year-old but couldn’t con-firm he’d assist him in 2014.

‘‘If I’m here next year I’lldefinitely be doing that,’’ hesaid of the youngster.

‘‘Zaccy’s been playing good.

He deserves his spot in theCowboys squad next year.’’

Santo comes in to the sen-ior squad as another veteranfullback, Clint Greenshields, confirmed he is to retire.

North Queensland also ex-tended the contracts of for-wards Glenn Hall and ScottBolton yesterday, as well asyoungster Ethan Lowe.
