RYAN Harris and PeterSiddle got Australia off toa flying start in theirthrilling pursuit of a thirdTest victory on day five atOld Trafford.
However, with Austra-lia needing to win thematch to keep the Ashesalive, and wet weatherthreatening to spoil theirparty at any moment, it re-mained to be seen how cru-cial a Michael Clarke drop-ped catch off Joe Rootwould prove in the finalwash-up.
At lunch on the final dayEngland were 3-35 from 20overs, with Harris taking2-13 from seven and Siddle1-6 from three.
Root was not out 13 andIan Bell unbeaten on two,with England already outof DRS reviews.
Harris trapped Englandskipper Alastair Cook (0)plumb lbw in the thirdover of the day to leaveEngland 1-0.

CANTERBURY survivedJosh Dugan magic to main-tain their charge towards theNRL finals with a 39-20 come-from-behind win over StGeorge Illawarra last night.
Trailing by 12 points withhalf an hour remaining, theBulldogs scored five unans-wered tries — including adouble to man mountain SamKasiano — to solidify fifthspot on the ladder.
For much of the night it loo-ked like being the Josh Duganshow after the recently re-signed Dragons fullbackscored a first half double andset up another for JasonNightingale during a wither-ing burst by the home side.
Four straight tries gave theDragons a 48th-minute 20-8lead, but when they botched a
kick-off for the second time inthe game, the momentumshifted in the Dogs’ favour.
The much-maligned TonyWilliams did what Dogs fanshave been asking him to do allyear when he rumbled overoff a short Trent Hodkinsonpass to start the rot, the half-back again the orchestratorwhen Kasiano locked it upjust after the hour mark.
Two minutes later the Bull-dogs were in the lead whenTim Lafai sliced through toset up Josh Morris beforeKasiano and Williams se-cured their doubles to com-plete the ambush.
It looked like being a com-fortable night at the officewhen the Bulldogs scored twotries in the opening 12 min-utes, before the Dragonsturned to Dugan — who onFriday agreed to terms for an-other four years in the red V.
With little else working forthe home side, Dugan scoredtwo brilliant individual tries,the first with two big right-foot steps before a chip andchase on the stroke of half-time to give his side an un-likely lead.
He played the crucial rolein Nightingale’s try just afterthe restart and when Sam
Perrett’s missed intercept at-tempt gifted Daniel Vidot afour-pointer, the home sideappeared in control.
Meanwhile, NSW star GregBird has been slugged with agrade one dangerous contactcharge by the NRL match re-view committee following hishigh shot on Wests Tigers’Braith Anasta.
The Gold Coast back-rowerwon’t face suspension if he ta-kes the early guilty plea forthe incident in the Titans’ 36-6home win on Sunday.
