THE TRI LAKE ANIMAL HOSPITAL along with many Lake Country residents, helped raise almost $1,000 for a couple of animal charities over the Christmas holidays. A Santa Paws event, where many families brought their pets in to get pictures with Santa Paws, included Xanthus, a bearded dragon (below) as well as more traditional pets such as cats and dogs.
DEW PHOTOGRAPHY/CONTRIBUTED
Christmas may be fading into the mem-ory banks for most, but two Lake Country char-ities have received a gen-erous donation thanks to a Christmas event at the Tri Lake Animal hospi-tal in Lake Country.
Close to $1,000 was raised for the Okanagan Humane Society and Paws it Forward when Santa Paws stopped o at the Tri Lake Ani-mal Hospital just before Christmas, allowing resi-dent to get some season-al photos with their furry, feathered and scaly cli-ents in aid of the two lo-cal charities.
e event proved to be an amazing suc-cess with more than 40 pet owners from Lake Country, Kelowna and Vernon coming to see Santa, who met over 50 pets including Kash the Nigerian goat, Vixen the rat, Xanthus the bearded dragon, and Kira the py-thon, as well as festively attired cats and dogs.
“We had an amaz-ing time at the Tri Lake Santa photo shoot” said Charlotte from Paws It Forward. “It was so ex-citing to see some of our
Paws it Forward alumni dogs and their happy forever homes. We love how the community has been so supportive of our dog rescue and we can’t thank you all enough.”
anks to the gener-osity of those who at-tended, the event at the Tri Lake Animal Hospi-tal raised $841.28 for the two charities, including a donation from a love-ly couple who had saved up more than $200 in change over the year; and a pet photo shoot which was donated for silent auction by Laurie Dew, of Dew Photography.
Representatives from both charities were at the event and were able to meet and chat with
owners and identify po-tential new forever homes.
Louvain Schon, from the Okanagan Humane Society, was happy to be involved.
“Tri Lake Animal Hospital has been so supportive of the Oka-nagan Humane Soci-ety over many years and this is another example of their commitment to animal welfare and the generosity of animal lovers in the Okanagan,” said Schon. “I would like to thank everyone for their support and the donation will be of great help to the society. I would encourage any-one thinking of spaying or neutering their pets to
do this as it greatly helps reduce the number of unwanted pets and feral animals in the valley.”
While waiting for their moment in the spotlight, pets and owners were given tours of Tri Lake Ani-mal Hospital facilities by the doctors and animal health technologists, in-cluding the 24 hour ICU, operating rooms and CT scanner.
Drs. Linda Kaplan, Autumn Pulfer and Dawn Coldwell were also available for pet re-lated questions.
Tri Lake thanks all of their clients—owners and pets—for their sup-port of the event, and also all the sta who
helped make everything go smoothly and donat-ed their time and resour-ces for free.
Particular thanks to Santa Paws; local Win- eld resident and all round amazing Santa,
Ken Dehnke; Laurie Dew of Dew Photog-raphy and her assistant Carli who helped every pet look their best; and Pam Kirstiuk for her handmade jewelry and refreshments.

Now that 2012’s real estate market has come to a government-in-duced soft landing to start the new year, rst-time home buyers are be-ginning to feel the pres-sure.
Implementing Fi-nance Minister Jim Flaherty’s imposed mortgage rules last July is clearly the culprit for the Canada-wide hous-
ing sale cool down, but the Canadian govern-ment feels that the rules are doing their job well.
e government has expressed concern that Canadian households were taking on too much debt, with interest rates at an all-time low, and felt that rst-time home-owners are primarily the victim of over spend-ing and acquiring a con-sequential amount of debt.
With the tighten-ing on mortgage quali -cations, rst-time home buyers are having more di culty in obtaining an insured mortgage and therefore avoiding sub-stantial debt. “Less de-mand, lower prices, mod-estly, in the housing mar-ket are much better for Canadians than a boom followed by a bust,” said Flaherty.
“ e housing market has softened somewhat
in part because of steps that I’ve taken and I’m happy about that.”
In a recent survey of Canada for the month of December, a mere 17.5 per cent of sales were rst-time home buyers.
However, among all the recent doom and gloom, our B.C. govern-ment has implemented a program to help as-sist rst time-home buy-ers achieve their goal of homeownership.
e program is called First Time New Home Buyer Bonus and it al-lows for a savings up to $10,000.
e credit works out to ve per cent of the home’s purchase price, up to a maximum of $10,000, but it is only applicable to newly built homes. If you purchase a new home prior to March 31, 2013, you will receive this kick-back as an income tax credit.
Also available is a First-Time Home Buy-ers’ Program for exemp-tion from the property transfer tax. As long as you meet all of the in-itial eligible criteria and follow through with re-quirements which must be met in the year fol-

A Lake Country busi-ness is among the com-pany’s receiving support from the governments of Canada and British Col-umbia to help the tree fruit industry deal with advances in technology.
Kelowna-Lake Coun-try MP Ron Cannan and B.C. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick, the MLA for Kelow-na-Lake Country, made the announcement last week.
Coral Beach Farms in Lake Country will re-ceive more than $35,000 in funding for an innov-ative software program that will automate the sorting of stemless cher-ries.
e overall purpose of the project is to add value and reduce labour costs by introducing new tech-nologies not currently in use in the B.C. tree fruit industry.
e automatic sort-ing of cherries with and without stems will help
the sector take advantage of higher-value export markets that pay a pre-mium for stemmed cher-ries, leading to increased pro tability for farmers.
“ is new technol-ogy enables us to target speci c packs of cherries to speci c markets in a very cost e ective man-ner,” said Coral Beach Farms president David Geen. “We are appre-ciative of the support provided through the Agri ex program, which allows us to better serve our customers and com-pete in global markets.”
Four other projects will also receive funds totalling more than $66,000.
e Jind Fruit Com-pany will receive just over $26,000 for a project to improve cold-storage air quality and conditions at a packing house in Osoyoos.
e Okanagan Koo-tenay Cherry Growers’ Association will receive
more than $21,000 for two spotted wing dro-sophila larvae manage-ment projects.
e B.C. Fruit Grow-ers Association Re-search and Development Test Orchard is receiv-ing $19,200 for the cre-ation of quality standards that all cherry-packing organizations can use for their domestic and ex-port markets.
“ e B.C. govern-ment has been working with industry to focus on innovation and technol-ogy as we look at ways to expand their product line and markets,” said Let-nick.
“ e investment of more than $200,000 for these six projects will en-hance both our prov-ince’s tree fruit oper-ations and ensure the agrifoods industry con-tinues to be an integral part of British Colum-bia’s economy.”
In 2010, the govern-ments of Canada and
B.C. together contribut-ed $5 million to the Tree Fruit Market and Infra-structure Initiative.
e federal portion of this investment is made through the Agricul-tural Flexibility Fund (AgriFlex), part of the Economic Action Plan, a ve-year (2009 to 2014) program created to help reduce production costs, improve environment-
al sustainability, promote innovation, and respond to emerging opportun-ities and market challen-ges for the sector.
“B.C. has a strong reputation around the world for producing top-quality tree fruits, such as apples and cher-ries,” said Cannan.
“ ese projects and leading-edge technolo-gies will increase prof-itability and ensure that the region’s producers re-main industry leaders on the domestic and inter-national stage.”

A longstanding sports tradition in Kelowna is in jeopardy of being put on hold.
Due to a lack of fund-ing, organizers of the Ski2Sea Race may be forced to cancel the 34th edition of the multi-sport event, scheduled for Sunday, April 14.
Ski2Sea—a six-stage, 95-km race from Big White to Kelowna City Park—lost its major sponsor after the 2011 race and has been strug-gling to make ends meet ever since.
Between insurance fees and the purchase of t-shirts, the event costs a minimum of $17,000 to stage.
Ski2Sea president Sue
Keast said the local race is in dire need of spon-sorship dollars.
“We used to get $10,000 from our main sponsor, but they had to leave us last year,” said Keast.
“We ran last year’s race on our savings, but we’re not going to be able to do that again.
“I don’t believe we’ll be able to go forward this year without new sponsors.”
Keast said Ski2Sea is grateful for the support from all of its sponsors in the past, including Inter-ior Savings which served as a platinum sponsor for more than 30 years.
Between resignations and people moving away from Kelowna, the race committee is also in need
of at least ve new direc-tors to help keep the race running e ciently.
e Ski2Sea Race has been run every year in Kelowna since 1980.
Teams feature from one to six athletes who compete in six events in a relay format—down-hill skiing, cross country skiing, mountain biking, road biking, running and canoeing.
As many as 111 teams and more than 600 people have competed in past Ski2Sea events.
Along with support sta , volunteers, family and friends, the race typ-ically can involve up-wards of 2,000 people.
If the 2013 race has to be cancelled, Keast be-lieves it will be a big loss for the community.
“It’s an event athletes in our community have come to enjoy and de-pend on, whether they’re recreational or competi-tive athletes,” said Keast.
“It’s great for our city, too, people come here to stay in our hotels and eat in our restaurants.”
e Ski2Sea commit-tee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 29, to discuss its options.
Keast expects the committee to make a nal decision on the fate of the race by the middle of February.
For more information on the Ski2Sea Race, in-cluding sponsorship opportunities, contact Sue at 250-763-1354, or by email at [email protected].

In the church I at-tend, at least four key members were once
Roman Catholic.
I know of two who grew up Mennonite. Half a dozen, I gather, used to be Anglican. ere are a few former Baptists and Lutherans, though I don’t know how many.
At a guess, less than half the congregation grew up in the United Church of Canada.
We are, in many ways, a congregation of reli-gious refugees.
I include myself in that category, although I belong to the min-ority that has spent all of its life in the United Church. I nd refuge—the point of being a refu-gee—in this church from the religious rigidity that seems to ood north-wards across the border.
Denominational labels don’t matter as much as they once did. People go where they feel comfortable. Or, more accurately, they don’t go where they feel uncomfortable. Which probably accounts for the growing numbers in the national census who pro-fess “no religion.”
e former Catholics are mainly women, who felt fed up with being

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our communityThe news was
trumpeted with alarm here on
Vancouver Island which, along with the Gulf Islands, is the heartland of tinfoil-hat opposition to smart meters.
Of the 140,000 power customers who didn’t have a wireless meter by the end of the year, many have simply refused. Now BC Hydro has sent letters informing them “we can no longer delay the installation of a new meter at your home.”
“StopSmartMeters-BC” sent out a panicky email advising its resist-ance movement to brace against “storm trooper tactics” from BC Hydro sta , and urging phone and fax attacks on their local MLA o ce.
“Anger and outrage should be expressed, in a quiet way, so that we don’t sound hysteric-al, but people are being threatened, police called, etc.,” the anonymous e-mail helpfully suggests.
BC Hydro has also con rmed what I told
you a few months ago. ose bogus locks, chicken wire cages and important-looking signs, which were sold like modern-day snake oil, have no legal ef-fect to prevent the utility from working on its own equipment. ese ob-stacles to inspection have been and continue to be removed, along with dangerous grow-op by-passes and ddled mech-anical meters.
e technical argu-ments against wireless meters have been de-molished. False news re-ports and website claims still circulate, but no res have been attribut-
ed to the installation of 1.7 million wireless me-ters in B.C. About 1,200 faulty meter bases have also been replaced at BC Hydro’s expense, and as crude power-theft by-passes have been re-moved, the incidence of electrical res, already rare, has dropped sub-stantially.
Another popular myth is increased elec-tricity bills. Yes, if your bypass is removed, your bill will go up. Like gas pumps, power meters are required by federal law to be accurate.
Which brings us back to Team Tinfoil, which has been sold a cascading series of fantastic tales about the e ect of wire-less signals that are al-ready ever-present in all modern communities.
A Toronto-based expert group called Bad Science Watch has tackled claims of “electromagnetic hyper-sensitivity” head-on. I highly recommend their 10-page report and quali cations at www.
badsciencewatch.ca.In plain language,
with references to the best available scientif-ic studies, it describes the double-blind tests that prove people who claim this sensitivity are not actually able to detect when they are or are not being exposed to wireless signals.
It also exposes key “ac-tivists” in Canada. e most prominent is Dr. Magda Havas, an asso-ciate professor at Trent University, who has “de-veloped a career de-nouncing the safety of low-frequency electro-magnetic radiation.” She gives speeches, promotes her book and has worked with one David Stetzer to promote an “EMF l-ter” to sell to those who insist they feel what sci-ence shows they don’t.
Havas has appeared on TV “news” shows with “activist-entrepre-neur” Kevin Byrne.
His website appears to be a hub of cell tow-er and smart meter scare reports, but it’s inter-
spersed with prod-uct pitches for EMF Solutions Canada, of which Byrne is coinci-dentally president.
en there’s “entre-preneur-activist” Rob Metzinger, president of something called Safe Living Technologies Inc. He doesn’t run a lurid scare website, but he’s appeared on CBC and CTV as some sort of au-thority. ( e main haz-ard emanating from TVs is bad information.)
As the election ap-proaches, a ght is gear-ing up between the NDP and the B.C. Green Party for the ig-norant, superstitious and angry vote. e Greens in particular have dam-aged their credibility in a desperate bid to quiet their own tinfoil-chap-eau wing.
ere are bozo erup-tions ahead. I’ll have more on that in a future column.

All about diabetesWe have a four year old Maltese that we are very concerned about. Recently when we visited our veterinarian to have her ears checked, the doctor also pointed out that Ruby’s teeth were covered in thick
tartar and she had signi cant gum disease. We feel terrible that we were not aware of this, especially after learning that dental disease can lead to serious problems in other organs. ls it unusual for such a young dog to have such severe dental problems?
Your situation with Ruby and your question is a very common one. Wild canines like foxes and coyotes maintain their teeth pretty well because they must aggressively chew and tear at tough
food. On the other hand, our pet dogs usually eat food that is easy to chew and does little to clean their teeth. Another factor that may predispose some breeds of dogs to develop tartar buildup is abnormal dental anatomy. Some of the smaller breeds in particular may have abnormal tooth alignment and an abnormal bite which may make it so that they require frequent cleaning to prevent severe dental disease, tooth loss and possibly even serious systemic disease. To prevent oral disease like Ruby has, we encourage our clients to brush their dog’s teeth and to feed a prescription diet that aids in the prevention of tartar accumulation. Annual cleaning, just like for your own teeth is the other important prevention. The teeth must be cleaned above and below the gum line which as you know, is a bit uncomfortable. lt cannot be done properly in an awake patient so requires general anesthetic. The plan for dog’s in Ruby’s situation would be to have a thorough physical exam, a thorough cleaning under general anesthetic and then have you begin brushing Ruby’s teeth and feeding a tartar preventative diet.

Diabetes is a condition where people don’t produce enough insulin, and/or their cells don’t respond properly to insulin. Insulin is an important hormone produced by the pancreas that moves glucose, a type of sugar, into the body’s cells from the blood. Once inside the body’s cells, glucose is used as a source of energy. If insulin isn’t available or doesn’t work correctly to move glucose from the blood into cells, glucose will stay in the blood. Blood sugar levels will then increase. There are 3 main kinds of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot make insulin. Everyone with type 1 diabetes needs to take insulin on a daily basis. Less than 10% of all people with diabetes have type 1. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not make enough insulin and/or the body does not use insulin properly. It usually occurs in adults, although in some cases, children may be affected. People with type 2 diabetes are treated with lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) and diabetes medications (either oral medications or insulin). More than 90% of all people with diabetes have type 2. Type 2 diabetes is very closely linked to body weight and obesity. Gestational diabetes is a temporary type of diabetes that is rst diagnosed during pregnancy. Studies have shown that keeping blood sugar levels as close to the normal range as possible can help prevent the long-term health problems associated with diabetes, such as nerve damage, kidney disease, and blindness. Whichever type of diabetes you have, you’ll need to measure your blood sugar frequently and follow a treatment plan to keep your blood sugar under control. Your doctor and IDA pharmacist can show you how to monitor blood sugar levels.

How speci cally can Mini Dental Implants help denture wearers?
The standard insertion protocol for mini dental implants calls for four of them to be gently screwed into the front of a patient’s lower jaw. This is a relatively
painless procedure that can be performed by a general dentist, requiring only a mild anaesthesia. The patient’s denture is then carefully adjusted to allow it to snap onto the four mini implants. The result? A tight tting, completely reliable system that allows a patient to speak and eat with con dence. Because of the unique, minimally invasive procedure, the minute size of the implants, and the characteristic placement area, the typical Mini Dental Implant patient can enjoy a light meal an hour after having the mini implants placed. Please call our of ce for a complimentary consultation to see if you are a suitable candidate!

treated as second-class Christians. e Bap-tists—and perhaps the Mennonites—got fed up with having to park their brains at the door when they attended worship.
But the roots of child-hood practices run deep. Sometimes it takes very little to rouse ancient prejudices, or to scrape open old scars.
My cousin once-re-moved Andrew Brouse wrote me, several years ago, about exploring his own spiritual genealogy.
“As I explore my trad-itions,” he wrote, “I can see a partial re ection: e person I am; the person I was; the person I aspire to be.”
Andrew and I share common ancestors—my grandparents, his great-grandparents. John ompson Taylor was ordained in the Presby-
terian Church, went to India with his wife Win-nifred as missionaries, switched to the United Church at its founding in 1925.
On his mother’s side, Andrew noted, “My mother’s mother drew from evangelical Protest-ant, and possibly some Episcopalian/Catholic traditions.” His moth-er’s father—my uncle, a medical doctor—“de-rived from mainline Christian traditions.
“In each of these, I can see a partial re ec-tion: e family we are; the family we were; the family we aspire to be.”
ings got more com-plicated on his father’s side. His father’s mother was Jewish. Which made his father o cially Jew-ish. But his father’s father was distinctly Protestant.
“In each of these trad-itions,” Andrew mused, “I can see a partial re ec-
tion: e people we are; the people we were; the people we aspire to be.”
Today, we hardly no-tice mixed marriages: Between ethnic groups, between what we used to call “races,” even same sex marriages have become relatively commonplace.
But it wasn’t very long ago that marriages be-tween religious com-munities were considered radical because they forced at least one mem-ber of that family to be-come a religious refugee, seeking a new home.
I saved Andrew’s let-ter because I liked the way he described us. We are not trapped for-ever in our ethnic or re-ligious origins. Rather, those origins shape what we are, what we were and what we aspire to be.

▼ CHANGING FAITH
More choice in religion than our grandparents hadTAYLOR FROM A4
To the editor: e other night while
watching Global News from Vancouver, they ran a story on the homeless sleeping out in the open with the temperature continuing to fall.
Later in the broad-cast came the Liberal’s ad about how well they are doing for the popu-lace as B.C. has the low-est personal income tax in Canada as well as their job creation program for the future.
ey conveniently neglect to mention user fees which I am sure we are among the highest payers, and are increasing in the New Year. is is still another form of tax on those who can least a ord it or are on xed incomes.
My immediate thought was if the Liber-al government had taken the $15 million of our money that these ads are worth in order to tell us how well they were do-
ing for us and had util-ized that to provide shel-ters, food or even a ord-able housing for these people, it would have done a lot more good than the already well o receiving these funds to enhance their lifestyles.
If they want to adver-tise about what a great job they are doing this should come out of their personal campaign funds and not the tax payer’s money.
As far as I am con-cerned it is campaigning no matter how they try to pass it o as job relat-ed or the like.
Has anyone noticed how fast our provin-cial government has dis-tanced itself over the years from getting in-volved with the needy ever since food banks and other charitable or-ganizations got involved to help out and supple-ment what the govern-ment used to provide?
I guess if one has a
lame justi cation for something it can be passed o on to the pub-lic, who have no say,
when it is passed by their government.

Reidco Metal Indus-tries Ltd., of Kelow-na, has been awarded a $1.73-million subcon-tract to upgrade a eet of Light Armoured Vehi-cles III for the Canadian Army.
General Dynamics Land Systems—Can-ada awarded the contract to Reidco in support of new and improved ve-hicles in the Light Ar-moured Vehicle III Up-grade Project.
Reidco will be provid-ing brackets and other metal fabrications and machined components to General Dynamics to be used in the construc-tion of the newly de-signed Light Armoured Vehicle III hull.
Reidco Metal Indus-tries Ltd. has been work-ing with General Dy-namics for more than 15 years, supplying produc-tion components on the original Light Armoured Vehicle armoured per-sonnel carrier build of 650 vehicles.
“Canadian soldiers need the best tools for the job and deserve the best vehicle we can give them,” said Danny Deep, vice-president of Gener-al Dynamics Land Sys-tems—Canada. “ e LAV III Upgrade Pro-ject will enhance the LAV III eet’s surviv-ability, operational cap-ability and long-term performance. With our Canadian design and manufacturing base and over 500 suppliers lo-cated in every province of Canada, we are proud to say that the best ar-moured vehicles in the world are made in Can-ada.”
Ron Cannan, Kelow-na Lake Country MP, announced the subcon-tract last Friday on behalf of Bernard Valcourt, As-sociate Minister of Na-tional Defence.
“Today’s announce-ment demonstrates our continued support of our brave men and women in uniform and skilled Canadian workers—in-cluding right here in Ke-lowna,” Cannan said.
“Our investments will provide our troops with the modern equipment they need to conduct their missions safely and e ectively for many dec-ades to come.”
Minister Valcourt said in a statement: “Our investments in re-newing the Canadian Armed Forces’ capabil-
ities on land, sea and air are building a rst-class, modern military that is ready to take on the chal-lenges of the 21st cen-tury—while supporting Canadian workers across the country,”.
e Light Armoured Vehicle III Upgrade Pro-ject, one of four Family of Land Combat Vehicle projects announced by the federal government, will capitalize on exist-ing and evolving tech-nology to improve the protection, mobility and lethality of the Light Ar-moured Vehicle III eet.
e project will mod-ernize a portion of the existing eet to ensure it remains a highly protect-ed, operationally mobile and tactically agile com-bat vehicle that will re-main the backbone of domestic and exped-itionary task forces, ex-tending the life span of the eet to 2035.
is subcontract is a result of the federal goverment’s $1.064-bil-lion contract award to General Dynamics in
October 2011 for the de-livery of 550 upgraded Light Armoured Vehi-cles and is a prime ex-ample of the high qual-ity work Canadian in-dustry is carrying out as a result of the federal government’s Industrial
and Regional Bene ts policy. e government’s agreement with Gener-al Dynamics commits the company to re-invest 100 per cent of the con-

German Shepherd Cross Sex: Male Colour: Black/TanSpayed/Neutered: Yes Age: Adult Animal ID: 287196Donner is a very handsome dog who will be a welcome addition to any family. We do not know anything about his background, but we do know that he is a love. Even though he is a big boy, he does not like to spend long periods of time outside alone. He would quickly become a loyal and dedicated compan-ion. He is good with some other dogs, but he is discriminatory on which ones he likes. We had him mixed with Bob, a pit bull puppy and they got along great.
So if you are contemplating adding him to a family with an existing dog, it is imperative that you bring in your current dog to do a “meet and greet”. We have to be sure they get along before bringing Donner to his new home. Donner loves to play in our backyard and thoroughly enjoys playing fetch. He will make a wonderful addition to a family who knows the breed because he has stolen all of our hearts. Please speak with the Kelowna SPCA Dog Staff if you’d like to meet Donner.Donner
