PACKET RADIO NETWORK
Packet radio is a communication method that
transmits packets of data over a network
via RF signals.

HOW IT WORK
A special transceiver known as an RF modem
breaks down data into pieces or packet. Theypicked by radio tower and forwarded to the
proper address. If a packet is not received in
good condition, the received service
automatically ask the sending modem to
resend the missing or corrupted packets.

ADVANTAGES
a. Transmission cost are based on data packets, notconnected time
b. There is no roaming charges.
c. Transmissions are digitally encoded for greatersecurity than cellular communication offers.

a. Communication is slow.
b. Radio modem can be used only with e-mailapplications. There is no fax capability.
c. Radio modem are expensive and bulky.

CELLULAR SERVICES
In cellular services communication takes placethrough a grid of transmitters and receivers(transceivers), each one called cell. A signalfrom a cellular handset is handled by thenearest cell.
Frequencies are divided into cellbands with a buffer zone to prevent jammingof neighboring cells frequencies.

a. Each cellular handset is assigned a unique identity ornumeric arrangement module(NAM)
b. This identity is based on its home area.
c. As mobile moves across cells it continuously send msg tomobile telephone switching office(MTSO) to confirm itslocation.

MONITORING
Once the handset is power on, it
started getting information from local pagingchannels. It select an available channel and
goes into an ideal state. In the ideal state it
liento the data be transmitted over the
channel.

INCOMING CALLS
When incoming call is
received by the MTSO(mobile telephoneswitching office). It send the signal to all the
cell in that traffic area. The set received signal
and respond to the MTSO. The MTSO will
inform the set to use specific channel to
receive the call.

OUTGOING CALLS
To make a call, the user
enter the telephone number and transmit it toMTSO by an available access channel.
