ThreatstoOrangutans
ThereareanumberofthreatstothewildorangutanpopulationontheislandofBorneo:deforestation,fires,poachingandtheillegalpettrade.
Themainthreatislossofhabitatthroughdeforestation(mainlyforthedevelopmentofpalmoilplantations)andfires.Alreadyupto80percentofsuitableforestinIndonesiaandMalaysiahavebeenlostinthepast20years.Otherthreatsincludetheillegalpertradeandpoaching.
Todayabout57,000orangutanssurviveinthewildontheislandofBorneo.Thepopulationdeclinesbybetween3,000and5,000everyyear.
Iftherateofhabitatlossisnotslowedtheorang-utanscouldbeextinctinthewildwithin10–20years.
