Summary Scholars will recognize and identify the importance of the design of a bird’s beak and the adaptations of the beak for survival.

Key Concepts

Scholarswillrecognizetheimportanceofthebeakofabirdforsurvival.Theywillbegivenmaterialstocreateabeakandexplainhowthestructureoftheirbeakissimilartotheselectedbirds.Scholarswillalsobediscussingthesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenbirdsaroundtheglobe.

• Recognize the importance of a bird’s for survival • Record differences and similarities between various species of birds (Each class (K-2)

will study a different bird)

• Demonstrate actual models of the beak of a bird with given tools • Communicate and present their findings to other classes

Procedure

Teacherprep:gathermaterialsandresearchforscholarstouse

Classes:

Eachclass(K-2)willexplorevariousbirdsandtheirbeaksthroughresearchduringwhichwewilldiscusstheinformationoneachbeakanddecideononebirdeachforthatclasstofurtherexplore.

Next,eachclasswillfurtherresearchandstudythechosenbirdspecificallylookingatthebeakofthebirdandtheimportanceforitssurvival.

Haveeachclassexplorethematerialsandtoolstostartcreatingabeak,oncetheyhavetestedallmaterialsdecidewhichonesaremosteffectivefortheirbird.

Scholarswillusetheirmaterialstoattempttopickupvariousobjectsthatwillrepresentfoodintimedintervals;oncetheirtimeisupthatparticularclasswillgraphtheirfindings.

Scholarswillpresenttheirinformationfoundduringtheirresearchandusethematerialsasbeakstopickupdifferentobjectsfortheothertwoclassestosee.

Afterresearchiscompleteandpresentwewilltakeafieldtriptoseebirdsinourlocalenvironment.

Assessment

Scholars will design a real bird (using a build a bird kit) and attach their beak to the body of the bird.
