IntroductionHelp your students “learn how to learn!”

Lay a strong foundation in listening skills, the ability to follow directions, and in the ability to remem-ber what one sees and hears—important skills that students need to be successful both in school and in everyday life. Research has shown that visual and auditory discrimination and memory skills should be taught and that practice is required to improve these skills. The engaging activities found in Listen, Look, and Do! will provide young and special learners with meaningful skill practice.

A wide variety of activities are included: • Stories and Rhymes • Puzzles • Pictures to Color • Cut-and-Paste Activities • Games • Sequencing Activities

Introduction toAuditory Discrimination and Listening Skills

Learning how to listen and discern what is heard are essential skills for everyday living. Research tells us that listening skills can be greatly improved when these skills are practiced. The activities included in the “auditory discrimination and listening skills” section will help children learn to pay better attention when they are listening and they will be able to better understand what they have heard.

LISTEN CAREFULLYThe teacher should tell the children to close their eyes and to be very quiet. Then quietly walk around

the children, tap one child on the shoulder, and whisper a request in that child’s ear, such as say a nursery rhyme or sing a song. That child then performs the request. When the child is finished, the other children open their eyes and guess who was talking.

WHAT DOES NOT BELONG?The children are instructed to listen very carefully as the teacher tells a familiar story. The teacher

tells the story, but mixes up or changes some very important details, such as The Three Little Pigs, who built houses made from straw, sticks, and construction paper; or, The Three Bears and the boy named Goldhat, who snuck into the Bears home and ate all the scrambled eggs. The children are to raise their hands whenever they hear something that does not belong in the original version of the story. This game will quickly become a favorite of the children. This is a silly activity, but it will help the children to pay atten-tion and to become better listeners. It is exciting to anticipate that something funny is going to happen in a familiar story.

JACK JUMP UPTell the children to squat down on the floor, just like a Jack-in-the-Box. The teacher or a designated

child talks about “Jack,” such as, “Jack is very quiet today,” or “I can’t hear what Jack is saying.” When the teacher or the designated child suddenly says, “Jack jump!” or uses the word “jump” in a sentence, all the children must jump up.

CATS AND MICEThe children choose to be either “cats” or “mice.” The teacher will then play a piece of music. When

the music is in high tones the “mice” scamper all about the classroom. When the music changes to low tones, the mice stop where they are and the “cats” begin to stalk around the room. At various intervals, the teacher might surprise the children by playing in both high and low tones. All the “mice” and the “cats” will enjoy running around together. To create the tones, the use of drums, bells, and triangles are the most ef-fective. All the children in your classroom will enjoy this game. Be sure to also teach them that when the music stops - everyone should stop moving!

LISTEN AND GUESSThe teacher should have prepared a box full of small toys and various common classroom objects. The

teacher then draws one item out of the box and keeps its identity hidden from the children. The teacher then gives a brief description of that item. The children are to listen to the clues to the identity of the item. The first child to guess the correct item takes the place of the teacher and gets to pull out an object from the box and describe it to the class.

FUN WITH A TAPE RECORDERTape recorders can provide hours of educational entertainment for young children. Here are several

ideas that are easy to use and can greatly increase listening skills, auditory discrimination skills, as well as providing children with some fun experiences in developing oral language skills and self-confidence.

IDEA 1: Let each of the children record a short statement about themselves, such as, “I have short brown hair. I like to ride bikes. I love my red tennis shoes.” The other children listen and guess who is talking. This is a fun listening activity, and an effective tool for increasing expressive language skills.

IDEA 2: The teacher can make a tape recording of some of the people who work at the school, such as the principal, cooks, janitors, the librarian, or other teachers the chil-dren may be familiar with. This is a more difficult listen-ing task, but one that the children will enjoy. Again, the children listen and guess who is talking.

IDEA 3: It is also fun to have the children record messages for their parents to hear on parent night at school or for school conferences. The children will think this is fun and the parents will delight in hearing their own child’s voice.

IDEA 4: The teacher makes a tape recording of various sounds heard inside a home or building, such as a facet dripping, a toilet flushing, a door closing, or a vacuum cleaner. The children guess what created the sound. The teacher can also prepare an activity sheet with pictures of the sound-making ob-jects. The children listen and then color the picture of the sound they have just heard.

IDEA 5: Use the same format as idea 4, but this time record outdoor sounds such as a dog barking, a bee buzzing, a lawn mower, the sounds of traffic, or chil-dren playing at a park. Again, the children guess the sounds.

RHYME TIMERhyme Time is a game that helps children learn to identify and match two words that rhyme with

two words that do not rhyme, but both sets have similar meanings. For example: A plump kitten is a fat cat; a hole in the wall is a mouse house; Skinny James is Slim Jim; a happy father is a glad dad. These com-binations can be challenging.

GUESSING GAMEThe teacher asks all the children to close their eyes and listen carefully. The children are to identify

the objects that the teacher is using to create various sounds. Here are some examples of objects that can be used: sand blocks rubbing against each other; crinkling paper; writing on a chalkboard; tearing paper; tapping a pencil on a desk; erasing the chalkboard; drinking water from a glass; building with wooden blocks; blocks falling down; an egg beater; coloring with crayons; or, the ticking of a clock. The possibilities are endless and can be easily found in any classroom.

Why We Should Listen

Directions for the teacher: Each child will need a copy of this page, a pencil, and a pink, blue, and red crayon. The teacher should say to the children: “I would like you to listen very carefully and do exactly what I tell you to do to the picture of the rabbit. When we are finished with this page you will understand why it is so important to be a good listener.” 1. Print your name on the line. 2. We listen with our ears. Color the rabbit’s ears pink. 3. When we listen, we should look at the person who is talking. Draw blue circles around the rabbit’s eyes to help us remember to look. 4. We should stop what we are doing when someone talks. Color the stop sign red to help us remember to stop what we are doing and listen to what is being said. If we don’t understand what they are saying we should ask them to repeat it. 5. Turn off distractions so we can be better listeners. Put an “X” on the radio and tele-vision to remind us to turn off extra noise. 6. Ask the children if they can remember some of the “good listening” suggestions.
