This activity uses observational enquiry skills to identify and record religious artefacts from around the world.

The Living Cultures gallery on floor one explores the anthropological material culture from

around the world. The collection is mainly from areas outside Europe, namely Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.

Print out the worksheet provided for individual students in order to encourage an

understanding of the variety of culture and diversity of differing beliefs in the world

Below is a guide for how to use this resource in a 30 minute activity: 1. Allow students approximately 7 minutes to look around the galleries prior to

providing the task in order to find areas of interest and to allow them to get their bearings

2. Hand out the attached sheet (if desired) and instruct students to sketch and record information on three artefacts linked to religion on the gallery not associated with

religions they are familiar with. Allow approximately 5 minutes for students to

record each object 3. If time, allow some students to share information about their favourite object and

how it is linked to a culture’s religious beliefs. Discuss how these may be similar or different to some of the larger religious beliefs (Christianity, Islam etc).

Post-visit suggestion:

Use the sheets created by students back in the classroom to discuss religious beliefs, or create your own map showing where the objects recorded by all students were from.
