onight we bid good-bye to 2012 and wel-
come with high hopes of year 2013 that
will cater in improved socio-economiclives of our people ringing alive in our system.
This is happening on account of good govern-
ance in the Philippines being effectively pursued
by a popular President, Noynoy C. Aquino III.
Investor condence is high. Economic experts
project it will remain high onwards. This spells
prosperity as an aftermath, again attributed to
a credible national leadership.
On the part of the governed the Philippine
citizenry, they have a role to play. That age-old
`new years resolution is still a viable game,
declaring unto ourselves changes of attitudes
thoughts and actions towards governance.
With faith and condence in national lead-
ership it is incumbent upon us to ask: What
can I therefore contribute to the develop-
ment of the nation?
Primarily each of us should ponder what
we can do rst to help ourselves for our own
progress. A progressive citizen can do a lot
to help our nation achieve its goals. With
such wholesome atmosphere of governance
we can initiate our own plans for our own
progress that will eventually make a lot of
good for our country.
We wish everyone a Happy and Prosper-
ous Year 2013.
Commentary
fr. roy cimagala
BEFORE we dismiss the idea
as being outlandish, outrageous or
whatever, we just have to remind
ourselves that we are meant to live
our life with God. And this is not
only in heaven, our denitive state
in eternity, but right here and now.
No matter from what angle we
look at the issue, even if we take the
atheist view, we cannot escape from
the reality that our life, in its utter
objectivity, not minding rst our
subjectivity, is a life with God.
And thats simply because God
is the one giving us our very exist-
ence. And precisely because it is
existence that he gives us, he can-not but be the one also to keep and
maintain it, otherwise, if he with-
draws from us, then we would cease
to exist.
For sure, our existence does not
depend solely on the food we eat,
the water we drink, the good health
and other things that we may enjoy.
They contribute, of course,
but it is God who is rst of
all responsible for our exist-
ence.With this clarication,
we overcome what may be
referred to as the deistic bias
which considers God only as
Creator, giving us our exist-
ence at the start of our life,
but leaving us alone after
that.
And so he is always in us
as he is also in all other crea-
tures and things. That is why
we say God is everywhere. He is omnipresent. And if
that is so, then he is also in
each one of us.
Except that in our case,
his presence in us is not
meant to be simply passive
or inert. It is an active pres-
ence that corresponds to our
nature as a person endowedwith the power to know, to
be free and responsible, to
choose, to love, etc.
In short, we are supposed
to correspond to that pres-
ence by at least being aware
of him and then start devel-
oping a relationship that re-
ects all the aspects of our
lifepersonal, spiritual, so-
cial, material, professional,
economic, political, etc.
This is where we have
to cultivate the skill of rec-
ognizing his presence wher-
ever we are. We need tocultivate this skill, exerting
the appropriate effort for it,
because being aware of his
presence does not come to
us automatically.
God is spiritual, and
more than that is supernatu-

Monday, 7th Day in the Octave of Christmas1 Jn 2:18-21 Ps 96 Jn1:1-18
THE WORD
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, andthe Word as God. He was in the beginning with God. All things cameto be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came tobe through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.A man named John was sent from God. He came for the testimony, totestify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was notthe light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlight-ens everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and theworld came to be through him, but the world did not know him. Hecame to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. Butto those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God,to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural gen-eration nor by human choice nor by a mans decision but of God. Andthe Word became esh and made his dwelling among us, and we sawhis glory, the glory as of the Fathers only Son, full of grace and truth.John testied to him and cried out, saying, This was he of whom Isaid, The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because heexisted before me. From his fullness we have all received, grace inplace of grace, because while the law was g iven through Moses, graceand truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. Theonly Son, God, who is at the Fathers side, has revealed him.
GOD IN HUMAN FLESH
As a builder carefully lays a strong foundation that will supportthe mass of the complete building, so the author of Johns gospel art-fully develops a powerful and poetic prologue that will support theweight of his theological structure. For John, everything hinges on theastounding premise that the Word became esh; God has become ahuman being! This changes everything, the understanding that followsis that God has offered a new covenant. He makes clear (and preach-ers need to make clear) that this is not the covenant of the law, the onewith Moses. This is not the Ten Commandments. This is the gospel ofGods grace shown to us in Jesus Christ. Mortal esh will no longerbe condemned by sin. Grace will win the victory! Prayer: With greatjoy I welcome you into my world, Lord Jesus. You are with me in myown body. You share my esh and blood. In you I nd hope, for in youmy sins are forgiven and I become a child of God. Action: close youreyes. Put all things out of your mind and listen to your breathing. Feelthe life in you. That is God dwelling with you. (Between Sundays byPaul Boudreau, published by Paulines. This is the timely mo-
ment for Pacquiao to re-
ect/meditate on his box-
ing career. For the last 3
years, he had been pre-oc-
cupied with so many con-cerns aside from boxing.
There were other activities
which range from politics,
show business, product en-
dorsements, TV guesting to
preaching as a born again
Christian. These proved to
be too much for so serious
a business like boxing that
requires full-time attention.
In contrast, his opponent
Juan Manuel Marquez has
a 100% concentration on
boxing that he trained for 4months training.
Pacquiao abandoned his
faith that his mother, Di-
onisia raised him up. Pac-
quiao deliberately deviated
from his usual practice of
wearing a rosary when he
climbs into the ring making
the sign of the cross before
the ght and not attending
the usual Saturday morningpre-ght mass.
Instead, Pacquiao opted
to attend the bible service
which denitely showed
that he had abandoned his
Catholic faith.
The thought of Pacquiao
retiring should be seriously
considered by him. After
all, he has nothing more
to prove in boxing. He is
the only 8 times World
Champion in different di-
visions, was rated Fighter
of the Decade and 3 times
declared as Fighter of theYear.
He has done as proud as
Filipinos among the com-
munity of nations. Our
newest Filipino boxing
sensation Nonito Donaire
thinks its not yet time for
Pacquiao to hang up his
Before I thought of writ-
ing on the subject matter, I
was warned by my daugh-
ter never to use 4Ps to mean
Pantawid Pamilyang Pili-
pino Program as they have
received a Memorandum
from Secretary Soliman
regarding the issue. I hadto ask, why? To my mind,
4Ps is easy to remember
and easier to pronounce. I
was told that most often,
clients mispronounce it to
four sh or others mean
the Ps as Peace processes.
To most of my friends
who have aversion to
dole-outs, they think that
the Pantawid program is
a dole-out and is teaching
the poor to be lazy or even
lazier. This article to in-
tended for them.
The Pantawid Pamily-ang Pilipino program is
a strategy taken from the
Mexico Experience that

the poor to participate in

buying. A family bene-
ciary gets educational and
health grants from the gov-
ernment. From the meager
amount of 300 pesos each
family gets for a child of 3
to 14 years old for a maxi-
mum of 3 children per fam-
ily, the family can sendtheir children to school and
for these children to be able
to have access to health in-
terventions.
It is not a dole-out pro-
gram as there are conditions
the family has to adopt in
order for it to be in the pro-
gram otherwise, the ben-
eciaries are not given the
cash grant. Aside from the
300 pesos per child with
ages 3-14, the family also
receives 500 pesos as health
grant for 0-5 years old chil-
dren including de-worming.The assistance ensures that
children of poor families
are able to acquire primary
education and are able to
get access to health ameni-
ties. This means that chil-
dren of poor families who
cannot go to school because
of hunger and poverty are
able to do so.
It is a way of contribut-
ing or realizing the Millen-nium Development Goals
that will be gauged by 2015
for its success. The rst 5
years of the program is a
kind of social preparation
that will ultimately cul-
minate into providing the
families with livelihood as-
sistance and infrastructure
support if needed through
other government pro-
grams. By this time, these
families will no longer re-
ceive the educational and
health grants but will be
provided with livelihoodpackages that will make
them self-reliant.
People are asking why
the families are given mon-
ey instead of livelihood or
work right away. Simply
put, the program addresses
among others, the need to
achieve universal primary
education which is 3 to 14
years old. It is also ad-
dressed at eradicating ex-
treme poverty and hunger;
promoting gender equality
and empowering women;
reducing child mortalityrate; and improving mater-
nal health.
It has been observed that
member beneciaries of the
program have become more
aggressive in their econom-
ic activities. They undergo
gardening in vacant lots;
half are intended for home
consumption, the other half
are sold in markets for addi-
tional family income. The
mothers look for work in
the community while the
fathers continue with what-
ever jobs they have. By the
end of 5 years, these fami-
lies will have children who
have successfully gradu-
ated from both elementary
and high school. Slowlybut surely, the Ps that stand
for Pantawid Pamilyang
Pilipino Program will have
bridged the gap and make
the poor families capably
equipped members of soci-
ety.
gloves however, other box-
ers and boxing analysts say
its time for him to retire.
This writer is afraid that
Pacquiao might lose again
against Marquez in their
next ght as Marquez obvi-ously knows his weakness
and on the part of Pacquiao,
there is that psychologi-
cal effect that he has been
knock-out dead by Mar-
quez.
Pacqiuao, who is va-
cationing with his family
in the Holy Land should
do some soul searching on
what is his priority in life,
meditate and converse with
the Lord on what suits him.
This is the best time for
to retire. He should not
wait for time that he is de-feated again by knock-out.
He should remember the
wisdom of the Bible which
says that there is a time for
every season. There is a
time to begin and there is a
time to stop.
ral, innitely above our nature.
Nothing in our human natural
powers would enable us to de-
tect his presence without his
grace, his sharing of what hehas with us.
God takes the initiative
rst. St. Augustine expressed
this truth well when he said,
God created us without us.And he continued by saying,
But God cannot save us (or
cannot perfect us) without us.
In other words, while Godgives us always this grace, a
truth that is abundantly proven
in God sending his Son to us,
and this Son, Jesus Christ, both
God and man, accomplishedhis redemptive mission by of-
fering his life on the cross, we
on our part need to marshall
everything that we have to en-
gage ourselves with him. That is why we need to ex-
ert effort to at least be awareof his presence. We have to
nd ways for this purpose in
all situations and circumstanc-
es of our lifewhen we arealone or with others, when we
are working or resting, when
we are with the family at home
or with friends outside, when
we are in a trip, in a hotel roomalone, etc.
Each of these situations
calls for an appropriate plan
and strategy, since many arethe factors to be considered. We need to develop a certain
discipline, since we tend to be
held captive only by our hu-
man and worldly appetites,
and we nd it hard to be spir-itual.
We have to make many
acts of faith to crank up our
spiritual energies and enterinto the spiritual and supernat-
ural world. For this, we needto nd time to consider and
savor the doctrine of our faith
that would feed our prayer and
spiritual activities.
Besides, we have to do this
not only in some special mo-ments of the day, but rather
all the time, in all the circum-
stances of our life. Thus, we
need to nd ways of being in
Gods presence in every mo-ment of the day in a natural
way.
Like when things are go-
ing well or when we have
problems, when we are study-ing or doing some manual,
even menial work, when we
are using the internet, when
we do business or politics, etc.
We have to learn to live
with God always!

Although the entry ofnew players increased com-

sales, local retailers theywere forced to identify newways to set themselves apartfrom the competition.
Competition breedsinnovation, said Go, Al-though it eats everybodysrevenue we have to innovateand renovate to be morecompetitive.
Go said they changestrategies to stay ahead. When somebody kicks you,you start kicking around too.So we have to expand andgo everywhere where thereis opportunity, he said.
PRA board director Jon-athan Jay Aldeguer identi-ed fashion and electronicsas among the sub-sectors inretail that are facing toughercompetition these days.

Yap, however, said on-line retailing is a challengefor the industry.
The social media typeof marketing and online

gadgets rebounded from theweaker purchases last year.Consumers now purchasegadgets with advancedtechnology and improvedfunctionality despite beinga little bit pricey, Yap said, referring to mobile deviceswith Wi-Fi connectivity andsocial media tools.
Easy payment schemesoffered by banks also en-couraged consumers to in-crease spending on gadgets.
The sector, however, alsofaced challenges this year. One of these is the entry ofimported brands and the ex-

Several retail storesopened this year, amongthem JCentre Mall and Insu-lar Square in Mandaue City.
The countrys high andunexpected gross domestic
product (GDP) growths re-corded in the past quartershave led to better jobs andhigher income for Filipinoworkers.
Our masa has more jobstoo. So, even sari-sari storesare enjoying better sales, said Go, whose businesssupplies goods to sari-saristores all over the Visayas.
