3. Eligible PISA Students
Criteria for PISA student eligibility:
Enrolled in Grade 7 or higher; and
Born between 01 January 1996 and
31 December 1996.

An adequate number of students from your school will be sampled to complete a two-hour Paper-based test consisting of Mathematics, Science and Reading questions.
These students will also be asked to complete a 40 minutes questionnaire.
After taking the Paper-Based test and questionnaire, a sub-sample of students who participate in the print assessment will also participate in a 40-minutes Computer-Based Assessment of Problem Solving, Mathematics and Digital Reading.
In addition, schools will be requested to complete a School Questionnaire. Parents of students selected for PISA 2012 are requested to complete a Parent Questionnaire.

Definition of mathematical literacy
Mathematical literacy is an individual’s capacity to identify and understand the role that mathematics plays in the world, to make well-founded judgments and to use and engage with mathematics in ways that meet the needs of that individual’s life as a constructive, concerned and reflective citizen. (OECD, 2006, p.72)

The components of the mathematics domain :
(1) The situations or contexts in which the problems are
located;
(2) The mathematical content that has to be used to solve
the problems, organized by certain overarching ideas;
(3) The competencies that have to be activated in order to
connect the real world, in which the problems are
generated, with mathematics, and thus to solve the
problems.

Four overarching ideas are useful for the definition of the coverage of the mathematics domains:

Change and relationships;
Quantity; and
Uncertainty.
These ideas are important for reflecting the major threads of the school curriculum
