This banner was reputedly made by Mary MacKillopin Penola in the early 1850s. An article in the Border

Watch in the early 1850s about a procession of childrencarrlnng the banner, led by MacKillop, described it insome detail. The banner is of red satin, with text handlettered in gold and an embroidered representation ofa lily in the centre. It is now on display in the Woods-MacKillop Schoolhouse in Penola.

Its significance stems from its association withMacKillop, likely to soon be Australia's first RomanCatholii saint. It appeared in the very early days of

the emergence of the |osephite order - indeed beforethe schoolhouse in Penola had been builf whenMacKillop was teaching local school children in adisused stable. Apart from her letters, it is one ofthe very few personal effects she left behind.

Shepherd Broadcaster

The 'Shepherd Broadcaster/ was designed in 1923bytwo farmers from Naracoorte, Bill Shepherd and Tedfthinkel. Its purpose was to spread superphosphatemechanically over a wide radius. It achieved thisthrough the use of a spinning drum at the base of thehopper, driven by a chain from the axle of the truck towhich the hopper was fixed. The design was patentedby Shepherd and Horwood Bagshaw began produc-tion in the early 1920s. The broadcaster, with the trayfrom a Chevrolet truck, is on display at the Sheep'sBack, Naracoorte.

It is significant in that it provided an ingenioustechnical solution to a mechanical problem. Moreimportantly, it was the rheans by which a new ideacould be tested - spreadi^g supe{phosphate on cloverpasture. The experiment proved successful. There wasa dramatic increase in the growth of clover, which inturn enriched the soil by addi^g more nitrogen to it.This led to an increase in the carrying capacity of thepastur€, op€^irg the way for increased wool prod-uction, and the closer settlement which followed it.
