Editorial
Dear Readers,
2002 has been a decisive year forMulti-Contact. The course has beenset to assure the future of MC, andthe foundations for its continued pro-sperity have been laid. Every familyfirm eventually has to face up to thequestion of succession, and in doingso we did not rush into finding a solu-tion but took the time to find a settle-ment that creates a win-win situationfor all concerned.
Our affiliation to the Stäubli group isan ideal arrangement which enablesus to maintain our identity, to safe-guard the jobs of our staff, to cultivateour corporate culture and to continueproviding our customers with an opti-mum advisory and after-sales ser-vice. Now, however, we shall also beable to devote greater resources toresearch and development, to deve-loping new complete solutions and toopening up new markets.
The Stäubli company was founded inSwitzerland in 1892 and is now a mul-tinational group with factories in Swit-zerland, France, Germany and Italyand sales companies all over theworld. It has an international reputa-tion as a maker of shedding machinesfor the weaving industry, and also asa leader in the field of rapid-actioncouplings and robotics.
The MC Group will continue to opera-te in the market as an independententity, and our structure and organi-sation will remain unchanged. As inthe past, we shall attach first priorityto being a reliable partner for our cus-tomers. We want to develop and pro-duce optimum products individuallydesigned for the needs of our custo-

A well-earned retirement
In April 1964, in a dynamic little firmnamed Multi-Contact which thenhad a staff of 9, a young man of 25 –still in his probationary period – wasgiven the task of building up a newstock card index. Until then he knewnext to nothing about sockets andcrossbar distributors, but by thetime he had finished he knew theMC product range inside out.
He enjoyed his work, and togetherwith company founder Rudolf Neide-cker and a member of the sales staffhe soon gained his first experiencein dealing with custo-mers and interestedmembers of the publicat the Multi-Contactstand at what was thenthe Swiss IndustriesFair.
After only a year, theyoung man’s commit-ment and interest wererewarded with promo-tion to the rank of aut-horised signatory, andwhen the position ofcommercial managerbecame vacant a shorttime later, he seized theopportunity and offeredhis services.
No doubt you have longguessed that this young man wasJean Pierre Kritter, the present Di-rector and Export Manager. His newposition presented a big challenge, for his duties now also included per-sonnel management, accounting
and export management. He hand-led his new tasks in a masterly man-ner, was given more extensive sig-natory powers and contributed sub-stantially to the further growth ofMulti-Contact.
With the introduc-tion of Multilamtechnology in1968, things reallytook off. Turnovernow literally ex-ploded. The bigswitchgear manu-facturers such asBBC, Siemens,AEG and Toshibashowed a keen in-terest in this newtechnology, andone new develop-ment followedanother.
The stamped androlled tubes of CuBe Ø 4mm, whichcompeted with the bunch plugs andleaf spring plugs, also contributed toincreased sales so that the premisesin the Sommergasse in Basel beca-me too small and MC moved to theFabrikstrasse in Allschwil and finallyto its present location in new buil-dings in the Stockbrunnenrain.
When Dr. Peter Duss, the son-in-lawof Rudolf Neidecker and presentCEO, joined the company, J.P. Krit-ter was able to relinquish some ofhis duties and substantially reducehis work load.
The rest is part of the success story. His appointment as Vice-Directorand then as Director were a logicalconclusion.
Jean-Pierre Kritter told us: “I havegreatly enjoyed the almost 39 yearsI have spent in MC.
Through my work as export mana-ger I have got to know many diffe-rent people and their customs.
I have also tried to cultivate good re-lations with Japanese customers. Atthe beginning it was not always
easy to understand theirculture, but once youget the hang of dealingwith them you canachieve very good re-sults.
Finally I should like tothank our CEO Dr. PeterDuss, the heads of de-partment, all membersof the staff, the MCgroup companies andthe company’s repre-sentatives abroad fortheir many years ofgood and successfulcooperation.
I should also like to givea thought to the founderof Multi-Contact AG,
Mr. Rudolf Neidecker, who mademy career in MC possible. I wish mysuccessor, Franco Delvecchio, everysuccess in his new position in MCand hope that he will greatly enjoyhis work."

Back to the roots!
Returning to the parent company after 12 successful years abroad
It all began in 1986 in Allschwilwhen Franco Delvecchio was enga-ged as a draughtsman and designerby Mr. J.P. Kritter.
This job gave him an ideal openinginto the world of plug connectors,
and created a sound basis for hislater career steps.
In his work, he dealt with a widerange of special designs and thusaccumulated extensive know-howon the versatile MC-Multilam tech-nology.
In his subsequent work as a techni-cal adviser working in the field, hewas able to apply the MC plug con-nector technology in providing cus-tomers with creative solutions totheir specific problems on the spot.
In 1991 Mr. P. Duss appointed himgeneral manager of MC-Italia. Withthe successful establishment anddevelopment of MC-Italia, he de-monstrated his ability to judge situa-tions and to handle difficult tasks bypersistent and committed efforts.
12 years as General Manager andthe representative of MC in Italyhave brought him not only anin-depth knowledge of corporate
management but also an enormousexperience of life.

This was his first major challengeshortly after graduating in electricalengineering at the Politecnico diMilano.
His dissertation on the subject “Elec-trical Contacts in ElectromechanicalSystems” fitted in perfectly with theactivities of our company.
In serving its main region with ahighly demanding clientele from allimportant sectors – automation, rail-ways, welding systems, power dis-tribution – Mr. Bossi gathered agreat deal of experience.
Mr. Bossi also owes much of hisextensive “MC-Know-How” to thelarge proportion of custom-designedproducts whose development invol-ved a substantial amount of consul-tation with clients.

UK says goodbye to Victor T. Lavell
Managing director of Multi-Contact (UK) Ltd.
2002 was an eventful year for Multi-Contact (UK) Ltd. The fifteenth anni-versary of its foundation coincidedwith the retirement of Vic Lavell, itsManaging Director.
Vic was outstandingly equipped forhis position. His qualification in elec-
trical engineering and his purposefuland single-minded character set thepattern for his whole career.
His first love was sales, and aftergaining experience in various tech-nology firms he became sales mana-ger with Erma Ltd. in London, whichwas then the British representativeof MC. MC (UK) Ltd. was founded in1987.
Vic Lavell and Stan Rogers, anotherErma man with long experience withMC products, leased office and ware-house space in the business centreof Greenford, a suburb of London.
The initial period was a challenge, for the premises were small andcramped. However, the hard workgradually began to pay off and in1990 the company moved to MiltonKeynes. The company’s spaciouspremises here were a catalyst for itsfurther expansion.
In the years that followed, the pre-mises were steadily expanded andthe staff was increased to its pre-sent number of eighteen.
This steady growth is in particular aresult of Vic’s selling talent, his ne-gotiating skills and his deep commit-ment to the not always glamoroustask of winning an order.
Suppliers, colleagues, customers: attimes they all got to know his relent-less determination and his stubbornrefusal to take no for an answer.
Vic was a passionate, energetic andcharismatic manager. A friendly per-son who liked to initiate contacts, hehad a strong impact on the characterof the company.
We shall miss him greatly. We thankhim for all that he has done for thegrowth and prosperity of Multi-Con-tact (UK) Ltd. and wish him and hiswife Marlene a long and happy reti-rement.
The man of the future at MC (UK)
The year 2003 will bring far-reachingchanges at MC (UK). One of themost important of these is the ap-pointment of Selwyn Corns as Ma-naging Director.
Selwyn’s name will be familiar tomany colleagues within the Multi-
Contact group and to many custo-mers of MC (UK).
He joined us in July 1992 as Techni-cal Manager after having worked forseveral years with leading firmssuch as Rolls Royce and the HawkerSiddeley Group, where he was pro-ject manager for the design ofhigh-voltage switchgear.
He previously studied at LonsdaleCollege in Derbyshire, from whichhe graduated with a BSc in PowerEngineering.
After joining MC (UK), Selwyn’s firsttask was to build up and apply a pro-gramme for obtaining the ISO 9000certificate, a job which he performedwith energetic efficiency.
Certification was obtained withoutreservations and with the compli-ments of the BVQI assessor.
During the past ten years Selwyn’sinfluence in MC UK has been strong-ly felt, not only in matters of qualityand technology for he is also the
company’s Health and Safety Offi-cer, a position that today carries anunenviable burden of responsibility.
At the beginning of 2001 Selwynwas promoted to Technical Director,a position that gave him a bigger sayin the management of the firm.
Selwyn’s background, his trainingand past experience make him anideal candidate for the top job of Ma-naging Director, and some of the de-cisions he has already taken leaveus in no doubt that he will take upthis challenge with the same enthu-siasm, energy and resolve which hehas already shown in his previouspositions.
These few words alone leave nodoubt that MC (UK) is in good andcapable hands and that it thereforehas excellent prospects for thefuture.

As a result of its sili-cone insulation, theconnecting leadstays highly flexibleover a wide tempera-ture range.
Its high temperature resistance (ashigh as +300°C) for short periodsprevents damage to the lead if it isaccidentally touched with a hot sol-dering iron.
Further advantages of siliconeinsulation:
Resistance to ageing
Good mechanical properties suchas high notch-tensile strength, extension at break and resistanceto tear propagation
Good resistance to chemicals
Good resistance to radiation
Halogen-free and thereforeenvironment-friendly
For safe use in the HF range, thepassive test probe is rated in accor-dance with IEC / EN 61010-031 forvoltages up to 1000V, CATII, irre-spective of frequency (see curve)

MC Homepage Updateshen Multi-Contact introduced new designations for its various productgroups, this meant that both we and our customers had to forget old, familiar names and get used to the new and much more meaningfulones.
However, we left the old product groupings on our web site for a time and triedto simplify the changeover with such aids as the Flash Newline Tool. You willfind this tool under the menu heading “Documents – Overview of All Catalo-gues”.
We also offer this tool on CD in PDF format (Adobe Acrobat) with all cataloguesand flyers. Obviously, however, only the data in our web site can be kept alwaysup to date.
We now believe it is time to equip the MC web site with buttonsthat contain the new product group designations and to introducethe associated colour coding.
We consider it an absolute must to keep our web site in line withthe latest developments and to update it at least once per week.
What’s Flashith its graphic and interac-tive possibilities, the Macro-media Flash Standard hasgained general acceptance
and there is now hardly a site thatdoes not use this feature. Since it in-volves no extra costs for the enduser, we have begun making ourwide range of data accessible in thisway.
The buttons “About us – History”show the success story
of Multi-Contact in atime-line programmed
with Flash.
Needless to say, all theseFlash aids are available inall five languages of the Multi-Contactweb site.
Just as this News was going to press,we were pleased to note that our sitehad notched up its 100,000th visitor.

force of the computer world. Theykeep it always on the move and obligeprivate and corporate users, willy-nilly,to make new investments even if theyacquired a completely new systemonly a short time ago.
But ideas like continuity, solidity andtradition are coming back into theirown and have somewhat curbed thewild excesses of the “New Market”.
