The oldest Shiva temple in the District and is declared as ancient monument by State
Government under Ancient Monument & Preservation Act 7 of 1957.

The temple is recently renovated and is very famous among the local people.
4 British cemetery sa
The cemetery is a historic graveyard of the British period of the world war era. It lies in the
Golf course in Meerut cantonment area and as a result the access to the cemetery is
restricted.
5 Dargah of Hazrat
Bale Mian
Bale Miyan ki Darghah was built by Qutubuddin Aibak in 1194. Yearly an Urs is organized
on this mazaar during the Nauchandi mela.
6 St. John's Church
This church was established by Chaplin Reverend Henry Fisher on behalf of the East India
Company in 1819 in the cantonment area. It is considered as one of the oldest churches in
North India with a seating capacity of 10,000 people. During the war of 1857, this church
was the scene of heavy fighting between Indians and the British forces.
7 Ghantaghar
Ghantaghar is the most outstanding structure built, by the Britishers, in 1914. It was built
in place of Kamboh Darwaza (one of the fort gates of Meerut) and stands as landmark in
the centre of the market.
8 Mustafa Palace
The building was named after Mustafa Khan Shaifta; who was one of the most
distinguished nobles of the time of the last Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar. The
amalgamation of many styles of architecture has made Mustafa Castle a unique structure.
It is one of the oldest buildings of Meerut.

9 Shaheed Smarak and
Freedom Struggle
Museum
Shaheed Park is made to honor the martyrs of First War of Independence 1857. It has a
stupa of 30 meter high made of marble. Functions are organized on every national festival
to pay homage.
10 Historical Jail ee
District Jail Abdullapur Meerut is a historic jail. It’s a fully functional jail and access is
restricted.
11 Augharhnath Mandir
Baba Augharnath temple is also called a Kali Paltan Mandir. It is said the ‘shiv linga’ present
in this temple emerged on its own. During the British rule, the Indian army was called ‘Kali
Paltan’ (black army). Since the temple is located close to the army barrack, it is also known
by the name ‘Kali Paltan mandir’. Presently the temple is fully functional with modern
architecture, latest facilities and draws a large number of devotees during festivals,
Shivratri, Poornima & Amavas
12 Suraj Kund
It was built by Lawar Jahawar Lal, a rich merchant in 1714. Originally, the tank was fed by
the water of Abu Nala. Now it is fed by Ganga Canal. There are several temples around the
Suraj Kund. Notable among these are Mansa Devi Temple and Baba Manohar Nath temple,
built during the period of Shah Jahan. During auspicious occasions the temple is visited by
hundreds of devotees.
13 Chandi Devi Temple
Every year, one week after the festival of Holi, a colorful fair called the Nauchandi Mela is
held on the Nauchandi Ground in Meerut which is attended by lakhs of people. This
traditional mela was started for cattle traders in 1672. Since then, the mela has undergone
many changes and cattle’s trading has been replaced by a number of activities of religious,
commercial nature, artistic creativity and rustic merriment.
14 Gandhari Talab
Gandhari Talab is related to Gandhari (Mahabharat) where according to myth, Gandhari
used to take bath. A lot of people come to Gandhari Talab for religious and recreational
purpose.

15 Gopeswar Temple
The temple was once the meditation centre for Gandhari and also an escape route for any
emergency. There is one secret tunnel which connects to Ghandhar, Hastinapur and
Sharang Rishi Ashram. The Natural vicinity of orchards makes the environment very
pleasant.
16 Sharang Rishi Ashram Sharang Rishi aashram named after Sharang Rishi, an ancient sage who had very good
knowledge of medicines. People from different places come here to get blessings and
treatment for their diseases etc.
17 Bahsuma
According to the tradition, Bahsuma was a muhalla of Hastinapur and served as the
treasury of the Kauravas and Pandavas. In the times of Gujar King Nain Singh of
Parikshitgarh, it became the headquarters of the government. The house of the raja and a
fort built by him still stands in the village.

19 Draupdi Ghaat
The Ghats are located on the banks of the Burhi Ganga. Religious people flock in large
numbers on bathing festivals. Drinking water facility, toilets and street furniture for
relaxation have been provided.

20 Archaelogical sites of
Hastinapur
Excavations conducted during the last five years, the remnants of Mahabharat days were
discovered from places like Hastinapur, Atrada village, Kheri Kaleen village and nearby
areas of Meerut. The designing and painting inscribed on these remnants indicates these
areas of Meerut District were parts of the Hastinapur kingdom. On the bank of the Budhi
Ganga, two places known as Draupadi Ghat and Karan Ghat remind two of the
Mahabharata personages.
The sites discovered during the exploration by the Northern Circle of the ASI are given in
Annexure 14-1.

21 Jamboo Deep & Jain
Temples
It is situated on the Gangetic plains of Hastinapur. The main institutions behind this
Jamboodweep structure are Kamal Mandir/Lotus Temple and Aryika Ratnamati
Kirtistambh. Apart from these two, there are 78 natural or Akritrim temples, 122 temples
of deity-palaces, and 6 Samavasarn temples in the structure of Jamboodweep, surrounded
by the circular Lavan Samudra. People assemble here specifically to enjoy the sight of
evening light & fountains. Various kind of facilities have been provided in the complex like
library, dining halls, meditation Centres, discussion forums, literature etc. Jamboo Deep is
both religious and recreational point.

22 Hastinapur Wild Life
Sanctuary
Chital, Sambhar, Nilgai, Leopard, Hyena, Antelope, Barasingha, Swamp Deer and Wild Cat.
350 species of birds- including painted stork, black and white mixed stork etc.
The sanctuary is the sole protected area in India conserving the endangered Gangetic
grassland biome. The vegetation of the sanctuary is of three types namely Tall wet
grasslands, Short grasslands and Dry scrub grasslands.
i. Tall wet grasslands in low lying areas, which remain inundated for most part of the
year. Tall Wet Grasslands are characterized by high density of grass species and
low occurrence of shrubs. It has 22 species of herbs, 5 species of grasses and 2
species of shrubs.
ii. Short grasslands remain dry from mid-winters till the onset of monsoon. It has 6
species of grasses, 4 of shrubs, 27 of herbs and 3 of trees.
iii. Dry scrub grasslands seen on raised grounds amidst the Ganga and on highland
and are also called as ‘Khola’. It has 5 species of trees, 4 of shrubs, 26 of herbs and
8 of grasses.
iv. Plantations: forest department has raised Eucalyptus, Acaia, Syzygium and
Dalbergia plantations as part of Social Forestry Scheme.

23 Begum Place and
Begum Samru Church
The palace and Church have an architectural value apart from religious value. The Shrine is
a spiritual centre. The palace includes a famous church and a fort which was built by
Begum Farzana Joanna Sumru. It was designed by an Italian architect Reghellini inspired by
St Peter's in Rome and Palladio. The altar and its surrounds are made of marble with
colored stones like the Taj Mahal. The interior is illuminated from an octagon set in the
dome. The palace is presently used for education purpose and Church for religious
purpose.
A yearly mela is organized on 2nd
November and 25th
December. The important fair of the
town is that of Burha Babu which is held in April on the Ramlila grounds.

1 Laakshagrah
It is identified with the Varanavata of the Mahabharata and the old mound to the south of
the village, which is about hundred feet high and extends over an area of 30 acres, is
believed to be the ruins of the Laksha Garaha (home of lac) which the Kauravas burnt down
in their attempt to kill the Pandavas. It’s a secluded place with very low tourist flow.
Apart from ancient buildings there are view points of Hindon & Krishna junction, two caves
and Gurukul Ashram a place associated with Gandhiji.

2 Pura Mahadev
Temple
According to a local tradition, the sage Parashuram founded a Shiva temple here and named
the place Shivapuri which in course of time changed to Shivpura and then got shortened to
Pura. Fairs are held here on the fourteenth day of Sravana and Phalguna which are attended
by approximately 1 lakh -1.5 lakh people respectively.

3 Parshuram ka Khera According to legend the site was the ashram of sage Parshuram. During the Shiv Ratri
pilgrims from far off places pay homage here.
4 Valmiki Ashram
(Famous as Luv-
Kush's birth place)
According to legend this was the ashram of Rishi Valmiki and Sita had stayed here during
her exile. Here she gave birth to Luv and Kush, the two sons of Lord Rama. Several bricks
bearing religious imprints have been found around the ashram.
Every year a festival is organised on the banks of the Hindon river, within the compound of
the ashram. The fair marks the birth of Luv & Kush and is also a means of felicitating and
honouring Rishi Valmiki. Another long week festival is organized during the month of falgun
which starts on the Mahashivratri of the month.

5 Sports Tourism
The Johri Rifle Club based in Johri Village supports a lot in bringing rural talent to the
National and International level. Tikri village there is an ashram known as Gurukul Prabhat
Ashram where the Combination of Sanskrit and Archery makes this a rare seat of learning.

Sites of 1857 first
war of
Independence,
Dhaulana
It was founded by a man named Dhaul Singh about 1500 years ago. It lies on Dasna
and Meerut-Hapur-Bulandshahr road at Gulaothi and is 25 km from Ghaziabad. The
village was sacked by the Sikhs in 1780 and again became the scene of action during
the freedom struggle of 1857 in which the local Rajputs took a leading part, 14 of them
being said to have been hanged. In 1957 the villagers raised a memorial in honor of
these martyrs. The memorial site can be integrated with the dedicated circuit for First
War of Independence.

Doodheshwar Nath temple is situated in the heart of Ghaziabad city. It is said that in
the ancient period, Ravana and his family members and other villagers came here for
feeding their cows and other animals and for pouring milk in this temple.

3 Nakka Kuan
According to the legend Parshuramji used to meditate here. There is an ancient
temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Presently the site is well developed and maintained.

4 Ganga Temple
The Temple is situated on a mound near old Garh village. This is a very important
temple and should be integrated with spiritual walk in Garh Village.
5 Mukteshwar
Mahadev Temple
This ancient Shiva Temple is said to be built by King Shivi. Garhmukteshwar is said to
have derived its name from this temple. The Shiva lingam at the temple is believed to
have been established by sage Parshuram. Opposite the Mukteshwar temple is a sandy
stretch of land called Meerabai ki Reti. Meerabai stayed here and offered prayers and
also had a temple built nearby.
6 Ancient fort It is believed that there have been an ancient fort Garhmukteshwar built by the
Pandavas and later repaired by Mir Bhawan, a Maratha General during the Anglo-
Maratha war. Later during British times it was used as a District administration office.
7 Brijghat
These Ghats are being developed on the lines of Haridwar. There are many
dharmshalas, temples and market available near Brij Ghat.

1 Exhibition Site
Each year during March and April months, Bulandshahr hosts the Exhibition (Numaish)-
Krishi and Udhyogik Pradarshani a popular and most awaited event.

Court
Historically Upper Court used to be in a fort of a local ruler, which was situated on a
mound, in the vicinity of Kali Nadi. The remains of fort are centrally located and are
accessed through old settlement of Bulandshahr. Presently, the fort is in dilapidated
condition and a part of it is being used as tehsil office.

3 Moti Bagh Palace Moti-Bagh is a palace located in the main Chowk of Bulandshahr on the Jahangirabad
road. It was built as one of the largest private residences in the city. It currently houses
a police station, a primary school and small garden.

Barrage
Naraura is an important pilgrim destination for the ritual of Gangasnana by millions
from nearby areas who come for a holy dip in the Ganges. The place has been
developed with Ghats, boating, informal markets and souvenir shops. There are many
fairs and festivals. In addition Naraura Atomic Power Plant is located here.

13 Unchagaon Fort
Unchagaon Fort lies along the Ganga, provides heritage experience and also promotes
rural tourism. The palace is a blend of early 20th Century Indian and Colonial
architecture. The imposing white façade of Surya Mahal is surrounded by lush green
lawns. The heritage hotel is entirely a private enterprise. It offers 21 Double rooms and
Suites and a host of activities & recreational games. This particular stretch of the
Ganga is famous for Ganges Dolphins. Sometimes crocodiles can also be seen.

reminiscent of mid-18th century architecture. This property is now converted and

The history of Khurja pottery goes back to about 600 years ago when some potters’
families migrated from Delhi to Khurja during the region of Mohammed Bin Tuglak.
Starting with red pottery they moved to introduce blue glaze on red clay articles.
Khurja supplies a large portion of the pottery to national and international market.
There are approximately 400 factories, making ceramic items, including sanitary goods,
fuses, cutouts, ashtrays, electric goods, footsteps etc. but those who are involved in
the traditional craft of pottery constitute only a handful. Khurja has one of the two
Central Ceramics and Glass Research Institutes in India (CGCRI).

Sikarpur

situated near Bara khamba.

It is situated on the bank of holy river Ganga at a distance of aprox. 40 km from the
district headquarter Bulandshahar. Karanvas place is mythically known to belong to
Mahabharat period where Karan use to donate gold every morning. At present, Karan
shila is situated inside the Karanwas temple. It is place of attraction for tourists and
devotees.

Sanctuary
Over 300 species of Local/Migratory birds are found in this sanctuary. Approximately
four square km, was notified as a Bird Park and Wild Life Sanctuary in 1990. Best,
though, during September-March for Winter Migratory Birds, Very good for Breeding
Flocks during Summer, Highest Density Ground for Bitterns, More birds can be seen at
the Khadar areas a little down-stream. It is now a Protected Area and is suitable to be
selected as a Ramsar Wetland. Continued reduction in number of species seen at the
sanctuary. 50 species not seen since 1970.

Mythologically name of Dankaur is derived from name of Guru Dronacharya. It was

In the village Bilaspur near Dankaur, the British established a base and from here they
collected taxes from over 1900 villages. The remains of the British fortress and the
cavalry association graveyard still exist.

3 Dau ji Mandir
Jewar
Jewar is situated at the distance of 60 kms from the district headquarter Gautambuddh
Nagar. This is an ancient temple is aprox 250 years old. This temple was constructed by
Sant Baba Dham Dau ji. It is believed that Bal Dau ji sculpture/statue was found while
excavating the temple field by the devotees of Baba Dham Dau ji .Therefore this
famous temple is known as Dau ji temple.
