Using Scale On A Map
Please turn to page 6 & 7

What is the scale on a map anyway?
A scale tells how many feet or miles each in on the map stands for
![Page 6: Map & Globe Skills](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050809/56815b8e550346895dc99217/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Why would we need a scale on a map??
Maps are always drawn smaller than the places they show. The scale is needed to
translate distances on the map to distances in the real world.

Using Directions On A Map
Directions on a map are different than the directions we used in our everyday life.
“Yeah, turn left then make a right after that hill and down the brick road you make another left then you’re there!”
Directions like that are not the most accurate and definitely would not be helpful when you’re traveling or trying to locate things on a map.

Using Latitude and Longitude On A Map
Please turn to pages 12-13
Has anyone ever been on an airplane? Did you ever wonder how the pilot knows where he is going?
The pilot uses these imaginary lines called latitude and longitude to guide him through the skies. These lines are also drawn on our maps
