3. Map Digitization @ UCLA
- Gain knowledge and expertise for sustainable scanning of maps (library-driven AND user-driven)
- Digitize as many maps as possible for a variety of uses:

- Overview of UCLA Map Collection
- Approximately 1 million print maps, worldwide coverage, historical and contemporary
- Single maps and map series
- Located in Research Library and SRLF (Geology as well)
- Classified using LC and Modified LC
- Sizes, shapes, and physical conditions vary greatly

- Map Scanning Pilot Project
- Six month pilot --August 2010 January 2011
- Digitize as many maps as possible from the historical California and Los Angeles collection
- Focusing on monograph maps not series
- Work out scanning, transport, cataloging, preservation
- issues
- Load into Digital Library Collection System and develop a way to easily get or host the data for GIS use.
- Create documentation
- Assess progress and plan for next stage of project.
- Assess scan-on-demand process and prices

- Current Activities
- Create an extensive inventory of CA and LA maps
- Trackphysical characteristics of maps
- Consult with conservator when questions arise about condition
- Remove encapsulation when possible
- Leave for outsourcing (most likely at SRLF) when not possible to scan with Contexscanner
- Work out the kinks
- Develop and tweak workflow
- Videoof scanner
