First thoughts David hull, Pastor

Last sunday our church voted on two recommendations that were presented by the Leadership Council. the first recommendation (to repeal the debt limit) passed with 82% in favor. the second recommendation (to approve a line of credit construction loan and establish a new debt limit) passed with 83% in favor. We are now prepared to take the next step in our building process. What happens next?

the Building Committee will continue to work with the architects to prepare bid packages for pre-qualified construction companies to have. these will be distributed in early April with the bids to be received in May. After adequate time for review of the bids, the church will have the opportunity to vote on entering into a contract with a construction company to begin the work. We hope that the groundbreaking will be in June.

My thanks go out to our Building Committee, Finance Committee, Leadership Council, Deacons and trustees for their wonderful work in bringing us to this point. i look forward to what god has in store for our church as we move forward.

speaking of moving forward . . . look ahead with me to this sunday night. “A Prism of Praise” will be a most unique event at 5:00 p.m. in our sanctuary. groups from throughout the wide range of our music ministry will present musical selections one right after the other. sound will come from all around the room as groups offer their gifts in praise of god.

our Music Ministry provides a blessing for us each week in worship. i am most grateful for the talented and committed folks who give of their time to make music that glorifies god. the opportunity to hear so many groups at one time will be a special blessing for our church.

You will not want to miss this significant event. Bring a friend and join us for the special night of music.

Helping Little Children with LentLent can seem so “heavy” in comparison to the anticipation and excitement of preparing for Christmas through Advent. what can this season of preparation to remember and celebrate the crucifixion and resurrection mean for little children?

Why not use some symbols to help your child learn the story of Easter?

ROOSTER- Do you have a rooster in your home already? Put it in the center of the table as a reminder of peter’s betrayal of Jesus. (see Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31, 66-72; Luke 22:31-34, 54-62; and John 13:36-38). The betrayal of Jesus by his friend was very upsetting, but Jesus knew that it would happen. The rooster symbol reminds us that it is always easier to say we will remain faithful than it is to actually remain faithful when the going gets tough. how-ever, the rooster also reminds us that God knows this and that if we ask, we will be forgiven.

BAsiN ANd TowEL – The basin and towel reminds us of John 13:5, which tells the story of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. The basin and towel represent Christ’s love for us and his willingness to be a servant to all. Is your family serving through Serving the City?

NAiLs – As symbols, nails represent the nails that were used to crucify Jesus. Nails remind us of how real the suffering and death of Jesus was.

BUTTERFLY – The butterfly is a symbol of both the resurrection of Jesus Christ and eternal life. The butterfly leaves the cocoon in a new form, which symbolizes how we are transformed through Jesus Christ from death to new life. Even young children can see how the cocoon can look dead and then open with the new life of a butterfly!

Cross – Most of us have a cross somewhere in our home. why not put one in the center of the table as a reminder of Christ’s love for us. Just saying those words for a very young child helps them to begin to understand that the cross is a special symbol for those who know and love Jesus. sing Jesus Loves Me with your child as a blessing during Lent.

These are just ideas and examples of ways that you can help your child begin to understand the weeks leading up to Easter. As the time grows near, Childhood Ministries will have materi-als outside of our office for you and your family to create Gospel Eggs. The story of Christ’s love for us needs to be taught first at home and we will reinforce that learning at church. Check the church library for books to read to your child to help them understand what we celebrate when we say, with confidence, HE IS ALIVE AND HE LOVES YOU AND ME!

Children’s Music and MissionsThis past weekend, two of our children, Jonathan Leviner (5th grade) and Peter Sizemore

(6th grade) went to panama City Beach, Florida to participate in the Alabama All-state Children's honor Choir, which is sponsored by the Alabama state Board of Missions. This

auditioned choir is made up of 200 children, grades 4 through 6, from all over Alabama. The children put on three full concerts over a two day period - singing at panama City Beach

Mall, First Baptist Church of panama City, and First Baptist Church of Enterprise, Alabama. This was Jonathan's first year with the Honor Choir, and Peter's third.

We're so proud of both of them!

A Prism of Praisein optics, a prism is used for dispersing light into a spectrum or for reflecting rays of light. In music circles, recent years have seen a number of universi-ty music departments develop what is called a "prism concert," an opportunity for the many organizations within the department to all perform on the same concert, often from various locations in the concert hall.

FBC is taking that concept to a different level this sunday evening in "A prism of praise." our music ministry is strong and vital, blessed with numerous groups of mu-sicians who regularly give themselves to the responsibilities of developing God-given skills and using those skills to bring glory to God and in the leadership of worship services. This sunday evening's presentation will feature 18 of these groups, each doing one selection of music. The music will flow in continuous fashion with no gaps between the pieces. The various music groups will present their music from various locations in our beautiful and spacious sanctuary. The effect will be a stunning one as the music "segues," or moves seamlessly from one genre and group to another. The worshippers who gather in the sanctuary will be treated to sounds all around them (from the loft, the rostrum, the front, the sides, the staircases, the cross aisle, and the balcony). Groups presenting music this sunday evening include: orchestra, Youth Choir, Adult handbell Choir, hallelujah Choir, Clarion winds, Young Musicians, Youth Band, Flute Choir, Young Musicians Handbell Choir, Bluegrass Band, Vocal Ensemble, Music Makers Choir, Men’s Ensemble, Youth handbell Choir, sanctuary Choir, saxophone Ensemble, First Fellowship Band, Combined Music Ministry Groups. "A prism of praise" will last approximately 65-70 minutes. Plan to be present for this unique presentation! Perhaps you have friends or associates who might attend with you. Invite them! We are grateful indeed for church musicians who reflect the Light of Christ in meaningful fashion.

our Mosaic Creator dies

we have learned of the death of the man who designed and oversaw construction of the big mosaic of Christ on our sanctuary front. Gordon William Smith, 89, a noted artist and collector of American indian art, died March 4, 2010, in Fort worth, TX. According to an obituary in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Mr. smith and his brother J. hulbert designed and created stain glass windows and other art for southern and southwestern churches and hospitals for more than 40 years. The only work cited was our church. "his 50-foot tall mosaic on an Ala-bama church includes l.4 million pieces of italian tile, and is one of the largest mosaics ever created in the U. s.," the paper said. -- Joe Jones, Church historian.
