There have been a number of coyote sightings in our
neighbourhood lately and with coyote mating season
upon us, it’s really just to be expected. Mating season for
coyotes occurs between January and March and
they are somewhat more visible during this time. They
can also be more protective, defensive, territorial, and
hungry around this time and so it’s important to address
concerns regarding our urban coyote population
and remind people how to avoid negative interactions
with these animals with whom we share our fine city.
Benefits of Urban Coyotes
Coyotes are one of Alberta’s native wildlife species and I
think it’s important to remind ourselves that we are
on their territory and also that they play a beneficial role
in urban ecology. Even urban coyotes, who have
access to various human foods, stick to a natural diet for
the most part. This includes fallen fruit, rodents,
geese, and small mammals like rabbits and hares. Coy-
otes really play a major role in keeping these sometimes
troublesome animals’ populations in check. They even
eat some insects! Coyotes also inadvertently protect
songbird populations. Because feral and wandering cats
avoid the coyote’s habitat, songbirds thrive in these
areas.
Preventing Negative Interactions
Attacks by coyotes are very rare. Coyotes do not see hu-
mans as prey. There are every once in a while, animals
that are more aggressive than is normal, and it’s im-
portant to know what to do if you encounter a more
aggressive coyote. Every so often, a dog is attacked by a
coyote, but this is also quite rare considering the
number of homes and dogs in Edmonton.
- Keep dogs on a leash – The City of Edmonton Animal
Licensing and Control Bylaw requires cats and
dogs to be supervised off their property. So avoid letting
your cat roam freely and keep your dog on a
leash. Also, don’t leave small dogs unattended. Even on
your property.
- Do not feed – Either accidentally or on purpose. It’s
important to keep your garbage secure and only
put it out on garbage days. Pick up fallen fruit as well and
keep pet food indoors.
If you do encounter a more aggressive coyote:
- Don’t run. This activates the predator-prey response
and you look like prey!
- Act aggressively toward them. Make lots of noise,
maintain eye contact, and appear as large as
possible.
- Carry a whistle if you walk your dog in areas frequented
by coyotes. Loud noises can scare them
away
- Talk to children about giving wildlife a lot of space and
never to run if they are approached by a
coyote.
Coyotes control their own population size, so culling or
relocating the animals is not helpful. New coyotes
come in to fill the void and females begin having larger
litters.
Remember these rules and appreciate them from afar. In
my opinion, it’s pretty great to have a little bit of the
wild in the city.

raised concerns about properties pur-
chased by developers and then left va-
cant for a period of time. There is no by-
law prohibiting unoccupied properties,
however, we can be vigilant as neigh-

about an unkept, vacant property (e.g.
overgrown and uncontrolled weeds or
lawn, unshoveled walks, unsecured
building, advanced state of disrepair),
please report it through City of Edmon-

PRESENTS AN OPEN MIC – OLD TIME JAMBOREE
Every Thursday evening starting 7:00 pm at North Glenora Community Hall we host a music jamboree. We have a core of musicians on stage; others sign up to take a turn to sing or play their instrument with the assistance of those backup musicians. Or if dancing is your thing – come out to listen to old time music and dance the night away. If you play an instrument but do not want to go on stage you are welcome to play in the circle on the floor with the other musicians. We generally have about 50 plus people on a Thursday night – some come to dance, other comes to just listen. We sell tickets on a “Chase the Ace” 50/50 Raffle Draw each night – at present the Progressive Pot is worth just over $500. Admission is $5.00 and everyone is welcome – includes coffee, tea and a light lunch served approximately 8:00 p.m.
