Mark Hughes: Stoke City manager agrees new deal until 2018

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has agreed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2018. The former Wales striker took charge in May 2013 and guided the Potters to ninth in his first season - their highest finish in the Premier League. "I'm delighted to have signed a new contract," said the 51-year-old. "I think it's exciting times for Stoke City, everyone can see there's more progress to be made and we want to see how far we can take the club." Hughes, was sacked as QPR manager in 2012, was appointed as the successor to Tony Pulis and the decision led to demonstrations from some Stoke fans. The Potters are currently 10th in the Premier League, as they target a second successive finish in the top half of the Premier League. "I came here 18 or so months ago and it's gone as well as I could have hoped - we've certainly kept progressing which is vitally important from my point of view," added the former Wales and Manchester City manager. "Continuity is a huge thing in football, certainly in the Premier League, and hopefully the fact I've signed a new contract will give continuity to the club and, more importantly, the players because it helps them when they work with someone for a prolonged spell."
