e-Infrastructures prospects &projects
1992-2002 MARnet the beginnings
1992 state investment in network and HW/SW at 6 Ss C&MUniversity campuses (HP & DEC, terminals & PCs)
MAN based on DEC Routers, WAN servers and DEC Repeaters forthe multimode fiber optics installations at 2 campuses. 4campuses interconnections based on leased lines andsynchronous 64Kbps baseband modems, later upgraded to2Mbps.
1992-1995 international X.25 protocol based, single link from theNational and University library in Skopje to the University ofMaribor Slovenia under the SINTIJ (Scientific and TechnologicalInformation System) project. (enabling only e-mail and telnetservices).
1995-1999 Internet service (TCP/IP protocol) through the 64Kbps VSAT link to Vienna (EBONE), sponsored by ACONet (half-link finance) and Open Society Institute of Macedonia.
1999-2004 university/state funded 512-Kbps – later 1Mbpsinternational link.
1992-2002 MARnet the beginnings
1997 MARnet regional links
64Kbps leased lines interconnectinguniversities in Skopje, Bitola,
and faculties in Ohrid, Prilep andStip.
Due to the high prices on the telecomm.
market and the growing demands of the
regional institutions they start providing
their internet connectivity through local
ISPs rather then through MARNet
1992-2002 MARnet the beginnings
1993- MARNet formally established as department at C&MUniversity
(Management, Advisory & Technical board)
Member
1993 - CEENet (Central and Eastern European National Academicand research Networks).
1994 - EARN (European Academic Research Network), latertransformed to TERENA (Trans European Research and EducationalAssociation)
MARnet signed MoA for collaboration and international connectivitybetween NRENs of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romaniaand Turkey, initiated by GRNET (Greece)
Characteristics: enthusiastic voluntary work of few people
participation in trainings, learning from advanced NRENs

2002-2009 SЕЕ countries close collaboration eInfrastructureactivities
SEEREN1/2: regional inter-NREN connectivity and GEANT links [DGINFSO] all countries in GN3 2009 (except AL and BA)
SEEFIRE: studying the feasibility of long-term solutions for dark fiber backbone in the region
SEELIGHT: implementation of the lambda facility in SEE [Greek Hiperb] vision of sustainable regional network (not successful for MK)
Result: sustainable national & regional networks, interconnections to GEANT, EC 50% funding
National dimension crucial: Role of NREN
in MK this was C&M/MARNet with participation of researchers from Institute of informatics
SEEREN 1&2, 2004-2009
Funding: 3,5 M eur
Services planned/implemented during the SEEREN1&2 projects and beyond
2004-2008 MK 4-34-64 Mbps link Athens, 2009 155 Mbps link Budapest

SEE Grid eInfrastructure activities 2004-2010
SEEGRID1/2: building regional Grid infrastructure within and beyond EGEE, building NGIs and user communities [DGINFSO]
SEE-GRID-SCI: eInfrastructure for large-scale environmental science user communities: meteorology, seismology, environmental protection. Inclusion of Caucasus.
[DGINFSO] All countries in EGI within the same timeframe as rest of Europe
Result: sustainable national Grids, EC funding for EGI project, like rest of EU (with 67% local funds)
:
2010-2013 HPC eInfrastructure
HP-SEE project, regional HPC interconnection
Result: sustainable national HPC centers, long-term sustainable model with PRACE and DEISA, mirroring GEANT/EGI?
National dimension crucial: Role of MARGI – Macedonian Grid Initiative

EGI PRICE
The Research Network infrastructure fast interconnection and advanced services’
Main Initiative: GEANT project
The Research Distributed Computing Infrastructure (Grid, HPC) provides a distributed environment for sharing computing power, storage, instruments and databases through the appropriate software (middleware) in order to solve complex application problems
Main Initiatives: EGI, PRACE projects
Integrated environment is called electronic infrastructure (eInfrastructure)
• allowing new methods of global collaborative research - referred to as electronic science (eScience)The creation of the eInfrastructure is a key objective of the European Research Area
SEE eInfrastructure activities – time frame, convergence with EU projects
