Inmathematics,thenumbersystemevolvedthroughtime:

• N:Atfirst,“numbers”meantsomethingyoucancount,likehowmanysheepafarmerowns.ThesearecalledNaturalNumbers(orcountingnumbers).

• W:Atsomepoint,theideaof“zero”cametobeconsideredasanumber.Ifthefarmerdoesnothaveanysheep,thenthenumberofsheepthatthefarmerownsiszero.NaturalNumberstogetherwith“zero”makeuptheWholeNumbers.

• Z:Evenmoreabstractthanzeroistheideaofnegativenumbers.If,inadditiontonothavinganysheep,thefarmerowessomeone3sheep,youcouldsaythatthenumberofsheepthatthefarmerownsisnegative3.TheexpandedsetofnumbersthatwegetbyincludingnegativeversionsofthecountingnumbersiscalledtheIntegers.

• Q:Thenextgeneralizationthatwecanmakeistoincludetheideaoffractions.Whileitisunlikelythatafarmerownsafractionalnumberofsheep,manyotherthingsinreallifearemeasuredinfractions,likeahalf-cupofsugar.Ifweaddfractionstothesetofintegers,wegetthesetofRationalNumbers.

• H:Therearenumbersthatcannotbeexpressedasafraction,andthesenumbersarecalledIrrationalbecausetheyarenotrational.
