[email protected] For Immediate Release on Thursday, April 09, 2009 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY LAUNCHED Public Encouraged to Take Online Survey
San Marcos, TX – Economic Development San Marcos (EDSM), together with partners in two
counties, three cities, three educational facilities, a hospital and retail outlet company, has
announced a seven-month process to deliver a long-term strategic community and economic
development plan for the Greater San Marcos Area.
“Our desire is to create a strong stakeholder partnership for economic development, one
that will work together to develop long-term strategies to help our community grow and prosper.
With this great partnership, we have exceeded our expectations,” said Mayor Susan Narvaiz.
The regional group, Partners for Progress, contributed initial funding earlier this year to
work with the City of San Marcos and hire Market Street Services, Inc., a community and
economic development consulting firm based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Partners for Progress includes the City of San Marcos, Economic Development San
Marcos, San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, Hays County, Caldwell County, the City of
Lockhart, the City of Luling, Prime Outlets, Texas State University-San Marcos, Central Texas
Medical Center, San Marcos CISD, and Gary Job Corps.
“Virtually every community across the county is facing a challenging economy. However,
today’s uncertainty should not prevent local economic developers from planning for the future.
The timing of this process is essential for Greater San Marcos to build its capacity to move its
economy forward,” said Mac Holladay, Market Street CEO.
Last week, the firm conducted a series of focus groups and individual interviews with over
150 local business, government, education and civic leaders. The entire business community and
Greater San Marcos Area residents may also provide feedback through an online survey located
at www.greatersanmarcosplan.com. The survey link is located in homepage upper left corner.
The survey results, combined with key demographic and market data, competitive
assessment findings, a target business analysis and a workforce assessment, will be used to
develop the first comprehensive plan for economic development in the Greater San Marcos Area.
About Economic Development San Marcos
Economic Development San Marcos is a public-private partnership between the City of San Marcos and the Greater San Marcos Chamber of Commerce that is responsible for creating new primary jobs through business retention, expansion, and recruitment. The organization has a 12-
member board that also oversees incentive requests and the economic development strategic plan for the city.
