Mazda’s i-stop idling stop system automatically shuts the engine down when you come to a complete halt after braking, saving the fuel wasted when stopped in traffic or at a signal. And the engine restarts smoothly and almost instantaneously within just 0.35 seconds.

Technology innovations starting from ‘Breakthrough’ thinkingConventional thinking says an engine can be either extremely powerful or outstandingly fuel efficient, but not both. So conventional engineering settles for a trade-off between the two goals and actually achieves neither at a high level. Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) BSM uses milliwave radar sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spots behind and to the side of Mazda2 and alert you to their presence. RCTA works in the same way when reversing out of a parking space.

Pillars and mirrors are designed to give a clear view from the driver’s seat. Rearward-positioned A-pillars widen the left and right spread angles allowing the driver to see further when cornering or spot short children at intersections. Side mirrors are mounted on the doors for enhanced pedestrian visibility.

The body provides world-class collision safety performance. Extensive use of ultra-high-tensile steel gives strength with low weight, while the framework absorbs and channels energy away from the cabin.

Front airbags are fitted as standard equipment to provide ample protection in a frontal collision. Newly-developed optional side and curtain airbags mitigate the effects of side impacts within the relatively short occupant-to-door distances in a compact car, providing another layer of protection in depth against physical shock and injury in a collision.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control System (TCS) electronically controls braking force applied to each wheel to prevent under- or oversteer and maintain vehicle stability when cornering on slippery roads or during sudden steering inputs.

Mazda2 features wide-ranging vehicle-control technologies to keep the driver in command and passengers safe. The four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (4W-ABS) prevents wheel lockup and assures manoeuvrability during emergency braking.

Maintaining your focus on the road, and on enjoyable driving

The cockpit is designed according to Mazda’s advanced Human-Machine Interface (HMI)

concept, allowing presentation of a wide range of information without taking attention

away from the road. Building on this safety-oriented HMI design, Mazda2 also offers the

latest in connectivity functions to enable sharing of information and experiences with the

world outside the car. Front and rear occupants enjoy a comfortable, roomy cabin whose

space belies the body’s compact proportions, with refinement that surpasses the class.

In addition to providing excellent night-time visibility, the four-lamp LED headlights enhance the unmistakable Mazda identity with their impressive design signature resembling the pupil of a predator’s eye.

The rear combination lamps also have Mazda’s unique lighting signature, continuing deep into the liftgate to create a slim, sharp, horizontal design.

16-inch aluminium wheels feature a powerful contrast between machined metallic brilliance and the tough look of the gun metallic paint on the spokes.

Compared to conventional hanging-type pedals, the organ-type accelerator offers more precise control for enhanced operability. In addition, the organ-type pedal makes it easier to move the foot over to the brake.

Drive Selection* switch on the shift gate allows switching to Sport mode, automatically setting the transmission and engine characteristics for powerful acceleration and linear response when merging onto a crowded highway.

The navigation system is provided on an SD media card and lets you set target destinations directly on the map or from your contact list.

The full-automatic climate-control system maximizes comfort by improved heating/ cooling performance.

Within its stylish proportions, Mazda2 offers ample space to accommodate a large suitcase. The wide-opening liftgate enables effortless loading and unloading.

The amount of information presented to support your driving continues to increase. So to show you this rising tide of information without compromising safety, Mazda engineered the cockpit with a driver-friendly HMI design to prevent confusion in decision-making, minimize eye movements, and reduce physical stress.The cockpit itself is divided into two zones, one focused on driving and the other focused on infotainment, and each zone has information

displays and controls according to its purpose. Physically separating these interfaces promotes easier recognition and smoother operation. The Mazda-developed Active Driving Display is mounted above the meter hood and shows the most essential driving information with no need to look away from the road. The meters themselves provide clear vehicle-status information, while frequently used operations are controlled without taking the hands off the steering wheel via steering-wheel mounted switches and paddle

shifters. Information for MZD CONNECT’s audio, communication and navigation functions is displayed on a seven-inch LCD mounted on top of the dashboard. This separate-type centre display greatly reduces the downward viewing angle and its graphics are designed for instant legibility. Multi-stage operations of MZD CONNECT are quickly and accurately controlled by a commander control located on the floor console where the driver’s hand naturally falls.

Internet connectivity has become an essential part of daily life, even while travelling in a car. So Mazda developed MZD CONNECT to provide versatile connectivity with the highest standards of safety. MZD CONNECT offers a huge range of infotainment options from the Internet through Aha™ by HARMAN when connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth®. The system's Audio feature allows selection of various music sources including AM/FM radio, CDs and mobile audio players, and Aha Internet Radio. The Communication feature reads SMS messages aloud, as well as other Internet social

networking services (Twitter and Facebook for example) available via Aha. And the Navigation feature shows your current position on a map along with a route to the specified destination. System software is easily updated, providing ongoing access to the latest services without swapping out any hardware.

Every detail of the cabin is dramatically transformed to give an experience that totally transcends the class. Drivers of virtually any size are assured of a comfortable, supportive driving posture, while the spacious cabin also provides a better forward view for rear passengers. Celebrating challenge,celebrating driving

The history of Mazda stretches back over 90 years — a history of meeting challenge head-on and

winning. In 1931 Mazda became the first manufacturer of an entirely Japanese-made three-wheel

vehicle, going on to cement its position as Japan’s leading maker of three-wheeled trucks, a

mainstay of short-haul cargo transportation at the time. At the end of World War II Mazda’s home

base of Hiroshima lay in ruins, yet Mazda took on the challenge of reconstruction and through

innovation and dedication resumed export of three-wheeled trucks within just four years.

In 1961 Mazda accepted another major challenge: development and commercialization of the

rotary engine. This unique design for the internal combustion engine presented a host of

technological hurdles including development of new materials and the improvement of process-

ing technology precision. And again Mazda engineers rose to the challenge, bringing fresh

thinking to the table and succeeding where others had failed. The result was a series of rotary-engined

vehicles beginning with the stunning 1967 Cosmo Sport, now a sought-after classic.

It was also the 60s that saw lightweight sports cars hit their peak. But through the course of the

70s, increasingly stringent safety standards and emissions controls caused their numbers to

plummet. Once again, Mazda saw a challenge — reinventing the lightweight sports car to meet

new safety and environmental standards while maintaining uniquely fun-to-drive characteris-

tics. In 1989 the groundbreaking Mazda MX-5 debuted to instant acclaim and has stayed in

production ever since, winning a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s best

selling two-seater sports car.

Further underlining Mazda’s sporting credentials came overall victory in the 1991 Le Mans 24

hour endurance race with the rotary engine 787B. This was the first — and only — time for a

Japanese manufacturer to take the laurels in this prestigious event, amply demonstrating that

not only do we set out to win, we do it with our own unique technology.

At Mazda, we have always blazed our own trail in our own way. Where others see limits, we see

only a challenge as we create vehicles for people who love to celebrate driving.
