MEET THE TUDORS
A. Henry VII
Henry VII (1457-1509) who come to the English throne
when the Wars of the Roses ended, was the first king of the Tudor dynasty. He tired, to consolidate his position through: a treaty
with France, giving him recognition; a trade treaty
with the Netherlands.
B. Henry VIII• Henry VIII (1491-1547) was
Henry VII’s second son. From his birth in 1491 until the death of his elder brother Arthur in 1502, he was brought up in an almost exsclusively female hausehold, with his sister, nurses and his mother, Elizabeth of York. In 1521 he was granted the title of “Defender of the Faith” by the pope in recognition of his Latin treatise defending the sacraments.
C. Mary I• Mary (1516-1558) was
born in 1516, the only surviving child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She was a girl and therefore a disapponitment to her father. She refused to abandon her own traditional faith and when she became queen in 1553 she belived herself to be the agent of a Counter-Reformation.
D. Elizabeth I
• In 1558, Elizabeth, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn’s daughter, became queen of a divided nation. She was 25 and had a srtong personality, a lively intelligence and a passionate character.
The sonnet• The Renaissance is considered
the “golden age” of poety because of the flourishing of love songs and sonnets. The sonnet wasintroduced into England by Sir Thomas Wyatt, from Italy, wgere it had been experimented with and refined by Dante and Petrarch, whose Canzoniere had became the model for all European Renassance poets. After a period of evolution, the English sonnet come to be identified with Shakespearean model.
Woman, lady, mistress
• The idealisation of the woman has been one of the main topics of Western literature since the works in ancient Greek and Latin.
William Shakespeare
• William tried to separate the different aspect of love that had been fused in Petrarch, in order to relationship.
-LIFE
• William Shakespear was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564. His father was a yeoman. William attend the local grammar school. He married Anne Hathaway when he was only 18 and she was 26 and pregnant whit their daughter.
-The actor and the playwringht
• Shakespeare was a playwright, a poet, an actor and shareoldr in his theatre company.
-The lenguage genius
• Shakespeare complex stage design created visual worlds. He coied new wors and phrases that we still use today.
- The poet
• Sakespeare’s sonnet were published in 1609. The collection included 154 sonnets in decasyllables. The 154 sonnets can be divided in 2 sections. The first is addressed to a “fair youth” and is devoted to the theme of ‘increase’. The second is addressed to a “dark lady” though physically unattractive, is irresistibly desirable.
-The comedian
• Shakespear’s comedian follow a certain set of conventions including: disguise, frustrated love, mistaken identity.
-The historian
• Shakespear’s history gave some sort of portrait of the nation as a whole. The story plays themselves were part of a process by which people come to see themselves as belonging to ‘England’.
