Mental Health at Work
T: 02476 552847 E: [email protected] W: www.cwmind.org.uk
Anyone can experience a mental health problem. At any given time, 1 in 4 working age adults have symptoms associated with mental ill health1. Mental ill health is responsible for 72 million working days lost and costs £34.9 billion each year2. The Health and Safety Executive report 12.8 million working days lost due to work related stress, depression or anxiety3. Thus, having a massive impact on business and productivity. Research suggests there is always a positive return when investment is made into staff wellbeing4. A recent report from The Lancet found that when Mental Health Training was given to staff and managers, work related stress and sickness were considerably reduced5. Other organisational benefits to mental health awareness training:
• Better staff retention and increased morale • Compliance with current Health and Safety legislation • Reduced grievance procedures • Evidence of corporate responsibility and duty of care • Reduced stigma around mental health • Creates an open and healthy environment where appropriate
support can be accessed • Early intervention to prevent long term absence

An Introduction to Mindfulness Mindfulness is a meditative practice whose origins lie in Eastern ways of thought. It helps to train and control our
focus of attention, so we concentrate in the present moment. There is clinical evidence to show that it can ease mild to moderate stress, anxiety and depression. This way of thinking is very different to how our minds would normally work so it does take some practice and patience. This short course will give you an introduction to Mindfulness,
knowledge and understanding of the way it can work as well as practical exercises you can try straight away. Based on the latest research and techniques - Mindfulness can improve
the way we respond to everyday challenges and help us cope with negative emotions. “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf” Jon Kabat-Zinn
